  • Niall Harbison, founder of one of Ireland's best known media brands has quit corporate life to save dogs on the tropical island of Koh Samui, Thailand. Dog lover Niall says he hates to see dogs suffering so he has taken it upon himself to feed and give medicine to the many stray dogs in the rural areas of the island. We went with Niall and documented some of what he does in one day. Niall is a gentleman and I very much admire what he's doing on Samui. Pleasure to meet you Niall and best of luck. #thairishtimes #kohsamui #streetdogsinthailand

Didn’t finish the video yet but as I Thai living abroad I’m surprised there are still plenty of stray dogs everywhere! With all the modernisation in material aspects, fancy buildings, shopping malls etc that the lack of education in dealing with stray dogs is so so high! I also don’t think being Buddhist is an excuse for this problem. Japan and many Buddhist countries don’t have this problem. I hope this gets solved soon, come on Thailand. I do love dogs and I admire him for looking after them. But the Thais have to change their way on this. Thanks Pete!!

..ad infinitum. Wanted to visit at home with Snoop and Jumbo. Looking forward to visit with Minnie after her surgery. I think her unique teeth and smile might be related to Boxer breed. Have been following Niall for last few months, maybe when he was getting more officially started on this mission. I am a beginning DONORBOX donor for Niall and dogs, pray for him and his dogs daily. Was glad to hear he is looking for a building to assist his endeavors. And people! As foreigner, you can obtain many years lease on Thai rental land, put your own buildings on it. You cannot buy land. Maybe that could change. Government should be willing to help fund. Niall is doing huge service to the country. My mother's relatives/ancestors are from Old Ross, near Wexford. Waterford. Want to see Niall establish a compound where he can also live, and have dogs, adopt them to people who are fully vetted and instructed in proper care. Thanks, Pete. But I wanted more of this story. Have to go walk Fiona-Bronwen (girl Border Collie) and Milo (boy Australian Shepherd) on the mean streets of L.A. before bedtime, and hope they leave me a space on bed. Thank you!

It's a very different culture there. A neighbor in my wife's village in Ubon had an old, practically blind, lame dog. The poor dog had a really crap quality of life. I offered to pay for the dog to be humanely euthanised by a vet. The owner was shocked and i think offended. The Buddhist ethos of not killing living things is alien to us.

An enormous undertaking on so many levels. It requires dedication - education of locals - help from the government - a lot of time - money and energy. Then it would be his ultimate goal to have his efforts rewarded by seeing a reduction in the amount of stray dogs. However, it will require a concerted effort by the powers that be and some ability for the local people to carry out say the neutering of dogs not least the feeding and caring of dogs. Burnout is real in these endeavors. I wish him luck.

If you truly care for these dogs, please feed them meat and not dyed dry food, give them plenty of buckets of water and hopefully you can neuter the males, spay the females.

I want to comment on this, I like people who help animals, but do you help dogs then eat pork, beef or chicken or whatever? I mean or drink milk. Then you are a speceitist. One species is not worth more than the other. All animals/ fish feel pain. Dont be a hypocrite and go vegan!
