Roadworthy Rescues "Motor City Model A" with Vice Grip Garage - Behind the scenes!

- Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage was kind enough to invite me onto his new Motor Trend TV show called Roadworthy Rescues to help with a 1928 Ford Model A that had been sitting for 60 years. We had just 5 days to get it running, driving, and looking respectable so that we could check out some historic Detroit landmarks like the Ford Highland Park plant (where most of the 15 million Model T's were made) and the Woodward Dream Cruise on famous Woodward Avenue. The Model A was in worse shape than we thought, can we do it? Here is what it was like behind the scenes filming that epic episode of Roadworthy Rescues, Season 1, episode 7, "Motown Model A". Roadworthy Rescues airs Tuesday nights at 10, or available any time on MotorTrend On Demand- www.motortrendondemand.com
Thank you to Derek Bieri and Motor Trend for this amazing opportunity! Thank you to Michelle Turczyn, Christine Dang, Sandon Voelker, Matthew Thompson, Sean Winograd, Brad Bass, and David Silberman. Also thank you to Dennis at MC3. Sorry Derek and I ruined your Harbor Freight shop vac!
For those wondering, there was nothing made up or faked, this is really what happened. Derek Bieri is exactly the same off camera as he is on camera. Absolutely no ego or attitude, just a super nice, down to earth fella who is ultra supportive of his friends and family. And, Derek really knows his stuff!! Don't be fooled by the humbleness, he is a top notch mechanic!

You and Derek make a great team! You both keep it interesting without over simplifying the work involved in getting it running. “If it was easy anyone could do it”
Derek makes working on cars fun!
@4:25 JC!!!
@@ModelA truth sir. Been watching him since he had about 7,000 subscribers. Wow did he blow up ! Greetings from Kansas City. Watched the whole episode on motortrend episode. Great work guys
@@youthmanrecords965 Thank you! A very blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours
Can't believe how good the rattle can paint job looks. But I gotta believe it since I'm looking right at it!
Textbook execution of Derekism #7! Well done.
Maybe because I’m an old man but this show brought tears as the times are changing and folks today are gradually losing history
I so loved this episode thanks for all you do keeping us old guys in touch with our aging hostory
Thanks Donnie. I am doing my beat to preserve this kind of American history.
Yes sir! That poor car barely made it on that long trip but it did! It certainly can use a lot of TLC. And yes, Derek knows his stuff. I like his channel as well. Congratulations Paul!!
It did fine until we got in stop and go traffic. Once we were moving again, it was solid
I am so glad Derek has gotten this famous, I started following him right before his channel blew up. The guy is a genius at what he does, truly funny and an awesome father. I bet your channel will blow up with Derek's appearance.👍
He is truly a great guy. My channel will never blow up, I'm way too niche.
Don't be too sure about that - There's 8 billion people in the world ... with that amount of people, even niche things can blow up.
it is nice to see Derek bringing in friends and family into his MotorTrend show. Nice of him to do that. Great episode Paul!
Derek is very generous!
congrats Paul - Hope you can do this again with Derek when it isn't so rushed so we can get more of the actual work on film. This was great though - you got lots of work in a short time! Thanks for including us - very interesting. Glad you are feeling better.
Thanks Jim. I sure hope we get to collaborate together again. Derek is so much fun to be around.
Thank you for what you bring to us old car guys. Well deserved recognition by Derek.
Thanks Joseph!
What an experience you guys had. The nostalgic piece of history you were able to be a part of is hard to gather through this small screen. I can only imagine you guys were on cloud 9! And there's no one better for you to have with you on such a venture as Derek. Great video!
Derek is an awesome human being
Saw the show last night on MotorTrend TV and loved your behind-the-scenes video! Thanks for taking us along with you!
Glad you enjoyed it Josh!
I would rewire all the wires. Every single wire... Because what you guys do is amazing 💪
Thanks to Derek, I was clued into your channel, and I am one fortunate youtube surfer. The amount of knowledge you've gathered over the years of working on these cars is incredible. Next spring, I start working on a 1940 Ford 1/2 ton truck my dad took apart in 1980. He had recently passed, and the truck is still in parts in his garage. It does have the original flathead in it, though.
So sorry to hear of your dad passing, Matthew. Good luck on the truck
That is a super story, what a transformation, lovely. I would bet you were just elated with the opportunity of doing that video. I always love seeing old model cars restored back to working order. Thanks Paul for this one, I hope you are having a wonderful week.
Yes it was! Thanks Dan!
Derek is awesome. He does all his own stunts.
Hahaa!b Yep. This car made us become blood brothers a couple times I think. It sure fought us.
So glad I ran across this on the motor trend network and going to share this with my Facebook friends. I had just finished listening to a book on CD from my library entitled "I invented the modern age the rise of Henry Ford" just some amazing history and am I glad I got to see some of the places they talked about in the book, hope to make it to Detroit someday myself, I had a Ford Fairmont about a 1980 and my dad had a 1950 black Ford and he had the convertible 1960 Ford Sunliner, in between those we a 1958 Ford Fairlane, we Also had and early 60's Mercury, a brand new 1969 Champaigne gold 351 Torino, and a 1973 Maverick.
Thanks Joe!
It's amazing that cars 🚗 like this are still just sitting around. Wish I had one 😪. Thanks for the video, Mike
Awesome to see y’all working together! Love to see that car on the road again!
Thanks David! That car belongs on the road, not rotting away in a corner of a storage lot for sure
That was a great episode! I am glad there are still folks around who are familiar with these old vehicles. And it sounds like Derek is glad as well. And thanks for the behind-the-scenes perspective.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a fun trip that was! Not only working with all those great people, but enjoying the history of Ford!
Yes it was!
Hey Paul, sincerely enjoyed watching urself and Derek resurrect that ol girl. Yall made a great team and looked like alot of fun. Cheers
Thanks! It was SO much fun working with Derek. He really knows his stuff and is super nice on and off camera
Nicely done. I would only argue Derrick didn’t land the show, the show landed Derrick. 😊
That's a fact!
So homesick...wish I could have been home for the Dream Cruise. I was around for the first one. So glad it's a Detroit tradition now, and Vice Grip Garage and Paul Shinn could show it....
I loved it just watched the show
Thanks Clyde
Thanks for taking us along. Thanks to Vice Grip Garage. I love this
Glad you enjoyed it Dan!
Good work! And how great to see the original Ford factory and Henry and Edsels offices! Wow!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely amazing!!! Talking with you at Model A Days Annie and I couldn’t wait for this video! What a fun journey for you guys!
Cold chills to think you guys stood in Henry
Fords Office! How blessed!! Glad your feeling better Paul. Thanks for what you do!
That was an amazing experience for sure. Glad to meet you at Model A Days!
The wait is finally over! I've been looking forward to this since the sneak peaks! That poor thing was rough... Amazed how well that rattle can job turned out in the end!
Derek is realoy good at going PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST!
well...im shocked to see the last car roll of the line...thankyou...awesome content.
Thank you for the great insight and behind the scenes into this awesome show and Thank you to @vicegripgarage & @Motortrend for allowing you to share this awesome experience and taking us along with you.. You are awesome!
Thank you Steve
Great show Derek! One of my favorites! Love Model As and Ts. Paul is a great add to your team of friends that assist!
Thanks Jim! I fear this may have been a one time thing. However, if given the opportunity to work with Derek again, I'm gonna jump on it!
Paul that poor original engine sounded so broken inside when turning over lol. This was one of the best collabs on youtube, Period.
Thank you!
This was a great episode! Thanks for the behind the scenes video. You all did a great job. The transformation was truly incredible.
Thank you so much!
I have been watching both of you for years cool to see you two together. Glad to see Derek doing so well.
Thanks so much
Thanks for sharing to us all. and HAPPY HOLIDAYS TOO ALL .
Amazing job, that car looks great and just 5 days, simply amazing. Derek has been around for awhile and I’ve seen lots of his videos but I’ve seen all of your videos. Thanks for taking us along with you what a great time. That stone is huge. Thanks for the video friend.
Thanks 👍
Thanks guy great to see
PAUL,WOW! What a page of history being in Mr Fords office. And you having issues to deal with for the time you were there. Definitely one of the best videos to date.Nice little paint job also, from a can! OUTSTANDING ! BE WELL SIR,THX
Thanks Dean!
Well done! Glad to see another “A” saved. Looking forward to the episode and to more collaborations!
Thanks again Jim
Awesome behind-the-scenes look, Paul! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it OHR!
This is great! I'm a long time subscriber of both Derek's and your channel, so this is such a great collaboration to see, absolutely loved it. We know that you helped Derek out on his VGG channel with the 700 mile quest in his Tudor sedan and it is great that he invited you to be part of this MT revival. Great Video! I'm so sorry that you were in so much pain during the filming, it didn't show at all. BTW, my favorite part is when you guys were playing "whac-a-valve' - that was hilarious.
Thanks SD! It wasn't 24/7 pain, it came and went in waves. Kidney stones suck. But playing Whack-a-Valve didn't suck.
@@ModelA Now if I can only get my '29 Tudor back on the road, it was converted to hydraulic brakes when she was restored in the '80s and they are constantly failing. I just want to go back to the OG mechanical brakes that Henry blessed her with when she was created. I just don't know what exactly she needs, how to do it, and where to source the parts. Good project for this winter I guess, somehow I'll figure it out. If I only had your brain and experience for a day!
Hey SD! Now is when you need the help and access to parts that an active Model A club can provide.
Truly enjoyed this video!! 👌 Thank for doing it Paul!
Thank you for being a part of this!
That was a great episode, and you and Derek have a great, easy going rapport, and I hope to see you two go in on another one. Roadworthy Rescues is one of the best shows on the Motortrend+ service.
Matt!!! That means a lot, thank you!
I just watched the show on tv. Great job Paul! Thanks for showing us the back story.
Glad you enjoyed it Chris
Just happened to watch on Motor Trend TV this evening. Very glad Derek had you join him! You guys did great!
Thanks Bill! I was so nervous at first, but Derek made it easy.
That looks like you had such a fun experience in Detroit! Glad you enjoyed it, despite the kidney stone!
I did!
Thank you for sharing this automotive history to a guy in Denmark. Thank you very much Paul.
Thank you Ole!
Awesome seeing the show, and then your video and extra content. I inherited my grandfathers amazing 31 coupe and appreciate your knowledge sharing of all things model A. My grandpa shared, loved, and taught many "Model A" as well. Thank you for all you do and your hard work!
That is awesome! Kudos to tour grandfather, and now you.
I really enjoyed this Paul thanks for sharing 👍It's really cool to see you and Derek working together on American history.
Our pleasure!
Dam I remember when I started watching him he layed on his back in his garage..good for you Derek
He has made it big time! I'm so proud of him.
Great video! I was there last year with a group that drove our A’s from Minnesota. What a sight to see. Keep them coming
Steve
That must have been awesome!
My heart goes out to you and hope you are well. I can't even imagine the pain you went through first just being there and keeping it from the other guys and then when you actually passed it I'm hurting just thinking about it.stay safe n well. From Scotland
I took one for the team!!
I've had the opportunity to drive a 1928 MODEL A . I drove a friend's a couple time and competed at the Indiana Newport Hill Climb. Had a great experience like no other.
Derek couldn't have selected a better "co-host" on this Model A episode! Congrats, looks like it was a blast!
Thanks Tom!! I'll never forget it
Are you and Derek going to do any video's on the red Model A he bought and drove 700 miles home with your "remote" assistance?? That would be "cool" too !!
Sirens and explosions, welcome to Detroit 😂😂 been here my whole life
I wasn't prepared for all the commotion
Hey thanks for the video, it was great to see a behind the scenes look on how the show is done. You and Derek did a great job and I hope to see you in future videos..... 👍👍👍
Thanks!!! If he ever does a Model A again, I'd jump at the chance!
Kidney stones! Been there, done that several times. Good news is that after I turned about 50, I haven't had any more, and I'm 80 now. They truly add a new depth to the old expression "pissing and moaning". I surely commiserate with you!
I remember my dad dealing with those a few times. I feel sorry for all of you having to deal with that. I could not imagine.
Thanks for this. Lots of fun!
Glad you enjoyed it David!
Glad to see Derek join other builders teaming up ..
Great recap vid! I enjoyed the show, too. Thanks for showing us behind the scenes! Very cool.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had to rewatch the episode after seeing your behind the scenes video. Enjoyed it even more the second time with the new perspective your video provided.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You did it again my Model A friend. I never thought that I would be looking so much forward to see your video’s Paul. Thanks and thanks again. It’s like I made that trip with you. Regards, Myron
Thanks Myron!

Our pleasure Jon!
What a great experience being there and doing that great job Paul keep it going!
Thank you! What a lot of work. Worth it!
DB’s comments on Mustang owners was spot on. Thanks for the behind the scenes adventure, hope to see you again
Thanks Tom!
Thanks for posting. I am amazed the "TV GODS" haven't pulled this already.
I got permission to post this from the producers.
wow, just awesome! all that history! You are a lucky guy to get to tour such a historic building and work on these beautiful machines rich in American history. Plus you get to hang out with Derek, such a cool guy. Keep up the great work friend!
Livin the life!!!
@@ModelA Amen! Blessings to you and yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
Wow...totally cool they allowed you to show this. It was a fantastic episode... great job Paul. Glad everything "came out" OK 😁
Thanks! MotorTrend are the nicest people ever! They said I could post this after the episode aired, no problem.
Great job guys
Love it Paul this awesome glad to see you got to help out and see where it all started 😀
Detroit was amazing! Want to go back when I have time to goof off.
Man that was nice! Great job on that model A, enjoyed that. Following Vice grip garage, and all affiliated channels, and you of course.
Thank you Johann!
Wow that was fun Keep on rocking
Very nice build. Thank you for sharing your video
A great episode hopes both of you do more on the model A and the model A Derek bought in the future
So cool! What a great experience (well, apart from the kidney stones)! That's an unbelievable transformation in such a short time. And yeah, talk about shivers at getting to stand in Henry Ford's office. That was a nice little bonus experience. On a sidenote, I think you're both bang on with the Mustang comments, haha.
Hahahaaa!! I know
Paul, thanks for this. Answers a lot of questions I had about this build. My sympathies on the stones. I’ve been through it and it required surgery. I’d asked Derek on FB for a behind the scenes video on road worthy. Thanks again, this was much appreciated.
Did he respond?
Holy Moly! That stone was HUGE! I feel your pain buddy!
I think I'm still feeling that one, man
Hi Paul, Greetings from a fellow Sport Coupe owner in the U.K. Loved this video and the show itself. As you said not perfect but another one saved! Keep em coming!
Yes! Thank you
when you said you did a colab with Derek, I assumed it was you and him working on his Model A. this is just as good.
Hee hee... Sneaky, no?
I LOVE both of your channels... and I'm a HUGE Model A fan! I had a 1929 Tudor when I was in high school that I never finished restoring because I enlisted in the US Navy in 1981 (dad sold the car a year after I left). I'd love to get a 28 or 29 Model A Phaeton some day. I've lived most of my life in Metro Detroit too!!!
Nice Paul! And thank you for serving our great country. Sincerely.
@@ModelA thank you so very much!
Great team and great video! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Like many others have written - thank you for this behind the scenes look! Just subscribed and look forward to more of your content. ~ Chuck
Wow this will be FABULOUS I WILL ENJOYING
Super cool!
Just saw the episode and opened my lap top to this! Great! You and Derek worked well together. Now you ARE a celeb!! Haha I know you don't want that . Stay well ,please! Kidney stones can be serious.
I am definitely not a celebrity. Just another Model A guy. Derek was FUN to work with! Oh man, I was laughing all the time.
great job Paul, hope to see you on a few more episodes.
Unless they do another Model A, then I won't be much good to them.
You guys are the best!
Thanks man
That was awesome thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it Hitch!
Very cool. Loved the episode. Watched it earlier.
Thanks!!
That’s really cool!
I watched the episode, it was great. I like the behind scenes view of the production. Pretty neat.
Thanks!
