Choosing the right buttons for a sewing project can be a real challenge, it can be hard to know which ones will look best or you might not be able to find what you are looking for at all. If this is the case I often like to create my own matching buttons (self cover buttons) and I'll show you how easy it is to cover buttons in your chosen fabric in this video.
You can use scraps of the fabric for your project or another fabric of your choice to cover a plain shank back button.
Self cover buttons are available in a wide range of sizes, different colours and plastic or metal. We stock Prym and Hemline self cover buttons on our site in a wide range of colours and you'll find links to everything I use in the video in the description below.
You can also buy a self cover button tool, which makes assembling the button really quick and easy. It isn't necessary to have a self button cover tool and I'll show you how to do it without one too. The tool just makes everything much quicker, simpler and easier. Again we stock Prym and Hemline versions on our site and you can find links below.
The other tools you will need are a fabric marker and seam ripper and you can find links to the ones I used below.

I wish I had one of those button making tools when I made a Christening robe for one of my granddaughters! I spent hours covering the buttons and one of those tools would have saved so much time! It all worked out in the end after so many tries. The dress was not easy to make. Cutting the fabric out was the worst bit especially the lace. I can fully understand how wedding dresses are so expensive. I felt so proud when she was wearing it and the next granddaughter wore it as well. Thank you so much for showing us in this video. The tool is on my shopping list! A must have!

Excellent tutorial as usual. Thank you. I am really encouraged now as I haven’t made any for 39 years! I did have a 37 year sewing break but always did them by hand years ago. I have had the Prym tool for a while and now it will be used. 😊

I love nothing more than hearing about someone reigniting their sewing passion after a break, it much be so much fun playing with all the new tools. Have you had a new sewing machine? They will have changed a lot in that time.

Even with the tool I use a hand running stitch around the edge of the fabric and tie the ends of thread in a tight knot. Then put the back on with tool or any other way.

I do too, I find it much easier than using the tool and you get a lovely result.

I've never seen the tool before. I've always made them by hand and it's too fiddly and not much fun for me. I think the tool will make covering 12 buttons so much faster. Thank you Lucy.

The Hemline cover tool description says for covering metal buttons, so does it not work with plastic buttons? I would like the option for either type.

Put an empty cotton reel over the button back and give a light tap with a hammer. This works with Gutermann 100 m reels and buttons around 18 - 20mm diameter

That said, I think I’ll invest in a button tool. For more fancy options, eg a central button colour surrounded by a ring of contrasting fabric, there are custom button making companies that have reasonable charges.
