Amelie and Lagaan are the more enjoyable movies, but No Man's Land is the more important movie, about the '90s Bosnian Muslim genocide, which is still relevant to this day. While I would've preferred Lagaan to win, No Man's Land is a deserving winner. 2001 was a very competitive year for the foreign film category, with Amelie, Lagaan and No Man's Land all deserving of the award.

+Razor Edge - That´s the problem with the Oscars. Very often it´s about "which movie is important". But this being a movie award, shouldn´t the award be given to the best movie? The Oscars is so often about "who deserved it this year" - which actor is "overdue" - like when Leonardo DiCaprio won it for "The Revenant".

I presume most of the people here talking about Lagaan deserving an Oscar hasn't even watched the other movies like No man's land and Amelie. They blindy supports Lagaan and shout about it losing the Oscar simply because it being an Indian movie and they're from India. I'm from India and I loved Lagaan. But having watched the other movies I believe No man's land deserved it that year.

The story of Lagaan was based upon a true story bitch and if u would have watched it, u would have seen it at last of the movie saying it was based on a true story on the character that Aamir Khan was playing. Next time, research before abusing on something or someone.

First Whoopi Goldberg stalls for time as they scramble to find Travolta, who THEN waltzes onto the stage with Sharon Stone. Then Travolta giggles at Foreign Films Film because he realises he is going to have to say difficult foreign names. Then a film portraying the brutality and destructiveness of people honoured at Oscars. Then Kevin Spacey walks on.........
What a roller coaster of emotions.
