It doesn't make sense for him to be unsatisfied with the sega genesis hardware at all.
He had already released the Moonwalking game for the Genesis four years prior and also had a Master System version of the game.
He most likely already knew what the genesis was and wasn't capable and was ok with it enough to release a game with him as protagonist and with his musics as soundtrack for the game.
The statement that he didn't like the genesis sound capabilities was probably a PR movement in the attempts to save face. He was already being bashed left and right. They probably just wanted to avoid giving more attention to the accusations.
So, it's not impossible that he didn't like the sound of the genesis but it is mostly unlikely and I would dare say it's a bit naive to truly believe it.

For example.... You may have noticed that in some genesis titles, you'll see clouds that are made up of white dots with 1 pixel gaps between them in the foreground.
On old composite CRT displays, the white pixels and the gaps blur together, to create the illusion of transparency.
Since modern displays are much clearer, and in much higher resolution, the illusion is ruined.

This was something I actually wanted to add, but not only that, but you can get whatever ROM hack (or "mod"), or worse, pirated ROMs, without even needing the game pirates are using to illegally distribute games. Users can go into where they downloaded their Steam Workshop content are found and get the ROMs that way, so that means what Blaze mentioned about how people can pirate games like the Genesis Aladdin game by using Ristar could pirate the game for free, which is even worse. I personally never used the Workshop to abuse or promote piracy, that and I was also strongly against and called out people that were condoning it, but I did use it to try out actual ROM hacks like Rouge in Sonic 1 out by getting that ROM hack and sticking the modified file into something like RetroArch, Fusion, or even the "Simple" launcher (which is actually DRM-free unlike the shoddy Mega Drive & Genesis Classics emulator) and use a program to pack the ROM hack to a file the "Simple" launcher can use.

Thing is, lets say they can't release due to the beta versions music not being fully finished and sound bad. Well the PC version already did that, so it's literally already done, if not without a potential remix.
It just sounds like sega doesn't understand or doesn't want to do the work. Despite that Sonic 3 on it's own is perfect for a standalone release if they include all the feature the game could have. For example the PC version of sonic 3 and knuckles lets you choose which of the 3 games you want, sonic 3, sonic & knuckles or sonic 3 & knuckles.
Then we have the option for either 2 games or the pc/beta soundtrack, the original or official release level layouts (like launch base being after carnival nights), the option for big arms to be added or removed in sonic 3 and knuckles along with many more! Sounds like good value for 1 game right? AIR is a great game and certainly has the potential for becoming the definitive version, but right now it's still a fight between that, S3C and modded S&KC: Each has their own unique features and (aside from 3C) modding systems to offer - naming one of them as the definitive version at the moment relies more heavily on opinion than say, Sonic Adventure (Which has mods covering everything you can think of on PC).
Eg: Even considering the mods available right now AIR has yet to include say, 3C's Flying Battery customization and the scene it adds between LBZ-MHZ, nor does it offer the extensive music customization offered by modded S&KC. They can be added, but that's why right now it only has the potential to be rather than being the definitive version.

Very nice and well researched history section! There's just one thing: The replacement compositions in The Sonic & Knuckles Collection (PC) weren't created just for the PC port; they're actually prototype compositions from before the Michael Jackson collaboration. The recently documented prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Nov 3, 1993 prototype) proves as such.

    One more word:
On the Steam workshop mods, you can use the in game "quick save" feature. I think it needs to be mapped to a key first, and is used by holding down the key until a "loading" animation completes (I suppose this minimizes risk of accidental quick saves)
Alternatively, one can fish the hacks out of the Steamworks folders, and use in an external emulator. They're often unmarked, so this could be a hassle if you use a lot of mods.

I hope your channel continues to grow because I love this stuff :D I'm gonna go off on a tangent, but don't think I'm hating here because I'm really not, I just have passion for emulation ahahaha
I too use Emulators for everything related to my channel, but at 18:10 while I completely agree that some Emulators can be a BALLACHE to run, I was a little shocked when you said it takes 'obscenely' powerful hardware to run certain console emulators at full speed, I'd disagree to some degree! Snes9x is a great emulator and doesn't require much power and is relatively accurate to 99% of people who aren't bothered around accuracy, while it's fair to say BSNES can take a ridiculous, ridiculous amount of power while being the most accurate.
You'll find that on the Speedruns live website, scores are only accepted for Snes9x and zSnes which aren't that taxing on hardware. They must be accurate enough to be negligible compared to a console at least due to that ruling.
If you're upscaling native resolution, or trying to get the highest quality then yeah it can be difficult as all hell... The DS emulator I use won't run at full speed on 4x native resolution, but it looks incredible at 4x. I don't know if that's an issue with the software optimisation or whether it's the hardware of my laptop, but the laptop is a 6 Core 12 Thread i7 7850h processor... So, I feel like that's powerful enough that it should manage, but I know emulation CAN be taxing and does take multiple times the amount of processor power to actually run games, I just can't see a DS game being that bad hahaha
Anyways, I've had a drink so I'm sorry for rambling. Feel free to hit me up on twitter, I'd enjoy having another CZcams friend with content like this! Good luck!

Why Sega released so many other versions of Sonic 3 with the Michael Jackson soundtrack intact is one of the great mysteries surrounding this game. Music licensing is a complex thing. It was long rumored that the music licensing for Sonic 1 and 2 were held up for a while, too.
The musician behind those games, Masato Nakamura, was part of one of the biggest pop music bands in all of Japan. The rumor was that he was charging Sega huge licensing fees for using his Sonic music, but Sega had a loophole where as long as they left the music in its original format (the Genesis FM synthesizer) then they either had to pay reduced fees or they didn't have to pay any licensing fees at all.
The way I understand it is, when it comes to music, you license the song itself and the PERFORMANCE of the song separately. So let's say you want to use Queen's "We Are the Champions." First, you pay to license the song itself, which is the notes and the lyrics. Then, on top of that, you also license Queen's actual performance of the song, meaning Freddie Mercury's voice, and the band members playing their instruments. In some cases, each band member is a separate performance you have to license individually, making their songs very expensive.
It's possible that Sega thought they were safe as long as they left the music in its original, untouched Genesis FM Synthesizer format, because in theory, they own the performance. With Masato Nakamura's music for Sonic 1 and 2, he would compose the music at his studio, and then send the recordings to Sega, where Sega's sound engineering team would translate Nakamura's music to work on the Sega Genesis. In short, Nakamura owned the notes because he created the song, but Sega owned the performance because their sound engineers translated the music.
This prevented any new versions of that classic Sonic music being generated. Sega could only use the original 16-bit versions. No remixes, no remasters. That seemed to change, as Sega apparently buried the hatchet with Masato Nakamura for the announcement of Sonic Generations. They had him on stage and that game was one of the first times Nakamura's music had been remixed possibly ever. Since then, Sega seems to have a much easier time using those songs in new projects, so maybe they bought the rights or something.
We don't know if any of this is true with Michael Jackson's Sonic 3 music. If the people that worked with Michael are claiming that Sega owes them money, there's clearly some legal problem happening behind the scenes and it's tangled up the release of any new versions of Sonic 3. The Sonic Classic Collection on DS was released in 2010, and these legal threats are from 2012, so Sega released it before realizing there was a problem.

Both Sonic 3 and S3&K were released with all original music in the "Sonic Mega Collection Plus" for PS2, released in Nov, 2002. This means it couldn't be an association or rights dispute issue, as that would have precluded its release with those music tracks, as well. For the difference between PC port vs other systems ports re music / sound issues, it is more likely, PC ports may not have been able to correctly play those particular music files and Sega didn't have the technical foundation to properly port those particular tracks in time for release schedule and thus had to go with a Plan B.

To be honest I’m surprised any sonic 3 content appeared in mania.

There are gonna be a lot of people that don't bother to look at the date this was uploaded who talk about sonic origins

Fantastic video, really interesting points on potential lawsuits/liabilities that I've never considered before - and I really must give AIR a try!

Also for PC Collection, you can install the mod loader and some mods that restore the Genesis music instead of midis

I can play S3C on my Linux box, Android phone, real hardware, Dreamcast, etc
Sonic 3 AIR is Windows-only. Wish it wasn't so exclusively one platform.

Euka is making an android port, but it will take some time, it now has a Mac Port. And a linux port is also in the works.
