  • Crate training is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who's in the crate. People who often cage their dog may try to argue, "But my dog loves his crate!" - but that's a bunch of hooey. There's no dog on Earth who "loves" to be locked inside a cage. Learn more about crating and the right way to housetrain your dog at peta.org/crate.

If you don't lock him inside then it's an entirely different story (and obviously if he needed to be confined for medical reasons and wasn't left for hours on end with no supervision), it's the people who lock there animals up for long periods that are cruel. I always ask if they'd want to spend 8-12 hours locked inside their closet.

my dogs genuinely do like their crates. they’re rarely shut in it, unless there’s a storm in which we shut the door and over it with a blanket, they calm down as they can’t see the flashes. they often go and lay down in it to sleep whenever they want really. it’s padded out with an old memory foam mayer was we cut up and put in a old duvet cover with a few blankets they can scratch around to get comfy. we have a large crate that my two eldest, who are mother and daughter, share and then a smaller one for the puppy although she often goes and sleeps in there with them!!
crates can be good if used good. ie they’re good to calm a pet because it’s a safe spot for them. but leaving them all day in it is wrong unless you’re worried they’ll eat or find something that could make them ill while your out.

However, when we used to have contractors around inside the house doing work sometimes we would put him in their for a half hour/hour while checking on him. There was no door to block him from potentially getting hurt and leaving him outside wasn't an option cause we feared someone would steal him or he'd get into a battle with another animal. My dog is not kept in a crate, she is house trained, and you know what? She's never been struck, not once. She does not know what it's like to be trained under the usual "rub the nose in it" training.
See, turns out, if you pay attention to your dog and take them out any time they start looking for a place to go, they'll eventually learn on their own that you don't go inside the house. It's also unnecessary to punish them for having an accident in the house.
Thanks to how gentle we are with her, you know how she treats her squeaky toys? She treats them like they're her puppies. She's super gentle with them and avoids squeaking them. IF they end up squeaking by accident, or if a human squeaks them, she takes them to her bed and comforts them...
She's such a sweet dog who literally does not know what it's like to be sad or scared.
Yes she was quite destructive when she was a puppy, but you know what? That's normal teething behavior. Give them chew toys and teach them to chew on that. If they tear something up when you're not home, there's again no need to punish them. With love and care, they'll grow out of that behavior on their own, and probably faster than if you did punish them, because it's also anxious behavior.
The way it works is this. They tear up the house and don't know what you're punishing them for. So they get anxious about you coming home and punishing them, and that anxiety can cause destructive behavior, thus delaying how long it takes for them to grow out of it, meanwhile you're just teaching them to fear you coming home.
My dog grew out of it as soon as her adult teeth all came in.
I get that the general wisdom is operant conditioning: using negative and positive reinforcement. However, over the years I've found it to be a lot less effective than merely positive reinforcement. Dogs don't have a mean bone in their body. They don't mean to displease, they only want to make you happy. So teach them how to make you happy. Distract them from bad behaviors instead of punishing them. It's way more effective and you end up with an even happier dog for it.

If the dog was free roaming when the owner was at work it wouldn't (or shouldnt) be able to potty anyway. Plus everyone who kennels know your dog stays in there for ONLY 10 HOURS A DAY, but should never be in there longer for 8 at a time. Plus most dogs dont need to pee every 8 hours, like my dog doesnt piss all over my house when I'm asleep despite being inside for 8 hours.

Before you get a dog you should truly ask yourself 'can I give this dog the life it deserves?'
Because being a responsible caretaker is more than putting a roof above their head and providing food and water.
If you find yourself in a position where you come to this video and your first question is 'well what else am I supposed to do? I can't do this, I can't do that' maybe you are not at a point in your life where you should be caring for a dog. Not because you are a bad person but because your current lifestyle doesn't allow you to.

And yes, my dog has a crate. A crate in itself isn't cruel.
She uses it as a safe spot for her to go to to unwind, sleep in during the day or hide in when she wants to. It's sort of a 'me-time area'.
I have locked her up exactly one time and that was after surgery where she wanted to run around but she was still under so much anesthesia that she could move around safely, nor could she control her bladder. I kept her company the entire time until the anesthesia went off.

This kind of idiocy makes PETA look bad. What totally BAD ADVICE. People aren't as stupid as you are giving them credit for. People can and do teach their dogs how to behave, and use crates, live in houses, ride in cars, walk on leads etc. All things that dogs did not originally do.
Correct 'crate 'training is just 'training'. 'House' training is the same: learning to live in a house. Should we stop having dogs in houses, as that is also not natural for canines?
You need someone else to do your 'research' and marketing. Someone that knows what they are talking about.
Come on, there are so many things that people do that is cruel and I mean really CRUEL (skinning alive, torturing...). We see it every day on social media.
Perhaps if you concentrate on some of that, and don't waste time on nonsense like this, you'd do a better job and get a bit more respect.

    • @peta
      @peta  Před 4 lety +1

A dog crate is a cage, and putting dogs in crates is just a way to ignore and warehouse them their "owners" get around to taking care of them properly. Many people leave dogs in crates for 18 hours a day, denying these animals any opportunity to relieve themselves, exercise, or walk around. Forcing animals to "hold it" all day and suffer in solitary confinement is a form of abuse.

    • @dreaminmama102

I have dogs all my life.and would never ever put one in a cage.the only time my animals r ever in a cage is when they have to stay at a vet hospital. Other then that never .I know people who go out for hours and the dog is held prisoner in a cage.these people dont even take them out for a walk before there r caged up.no dog should be stuff in a cage for hours.the owner should be cage up in a tiny cage with hardly any room to move in.see how they like it .and if you cage your dog because it is destroying your home or is hyper.its your fault not the dogs.when dogs dont get enough exercise they become hyper and destructive. Alot of dogs need more then just a walk on a leash.they need a place they can run free or play with other dogs.like a dog park.or go running with you dog.
