- Here is a video on 3 really useful Jazz Bass Tones that you can try.
0:00 Intro
0:32 Jaco
2:06 Marcus
3:17 P Bass
Some more detailed info on my settings:
Jaco
J Bass Settings (0% Neck 100% Bridge 70% Tone)
DI Settings (50% Bass 50% Middle 50% Treble)
Also Jaco didn't play exclusively over the bridge pickup but played over the neck pickup a lot as well as over the neck.
Marcus
J Bass Settings (100% Neck 100% Bridge 100% Tone)
DI Settings (50% Bass 35% Middle 50% Treble)
Another way you can achieve the scooped mids tone, as Marcus Miller himself mentioned himself doing in an interview with sweetwater.com (thanks Randy Gomez for pointing in out) is boost your bass and treble and keep mids flat.
P Bass
J Bass Settings (100% Neck 0% Bridge 80% Tone)
DI Settings (70% Bass 35% Middle 35% Treble)
I've used roundwound strings in all my playthroughs, but for that classic P Bass sound, flatwound strings are the way to go!

About Me: I'm a professional guitar and bass teacher. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
a lot of people forget to mention the beautiful, soft, warm, almost lowpass filtered tone you get by setting tone and bridge pup to 0 and neck pup to 50-60% (then crank the volume on your amp and play softly slightly in front of the neck pup toward the neck).you get that nice "modern" booming sade/cherish the day tone... the jazz bass basically has a lowpass filter built into it that most people dont even seem to know about
I started to play two years ago with a P bass. Recently just bought a Jazz bass. If the knobs fully open the tone is a typical jazz bass growl. But turning down the knobs to about 50 percent I can get a warm tone.
I didn’t like the neck tone with fully open tone knob.
I thought these two knobs for volume.
I discover that not long ago. Absolutely vintage warm sound
Works well for reggae
This was one of the best videos I've found on CZcams explaining how to get these signature sounds at home. Thank you for making it, and I hope you produce more related content in the future.
Excellent. Oh to have found this video way back when! Much appreciated 👏👏
I built a jazz bass from parts and added single coil lipstick tube pups with an Audere preamp. The range of tones is very good including the classic J bass sound.I'm pretty happy with it.
This is so helpful, thank you ❤
I discovered your channel a few days ago. I really like the quality of your video and your content. Thanks to your video talking about the Squier Jazz Bass, I bought one. But I just don't want to watch your video where you recommend bass for beginners... and I'm just starting in this little world...
Greetings from Argentina!!!
Thanks Francisco. Appreciate the nice comments, and hope you enjoy learning the bass, and playing your Squier Jazz Bass. Take care!
Actually, the Marcus Miller sound isn't cutting the mids like you did on your DI. He said himself in an interview with Sweetwater that he boosts the bass and Treble on his amps and doesn't cut the mids. This gives the impression of a mid scooped sound even though he hasn't actually cut any mids.
thanks Randy for pointing that out. I'll check out the article.
It helps me a lot!! Thanks
I love playing in all kinds of the various possible tone settings, which enables a lot of personal expressiveness for my own enjoyment, however for the band I'm in I always end up with the bridge pup off and the neck pup cranked.
Good content buddy, you deserve more subs!
Do you ever use blend for finger technique?
Thanks Lazar. Absolutely for finger style, having both volume knobs at 50% and having the tone rolled back a little is a good general tone. The examples in this video were the more extreme settings.
Super Tom-Jaco!!! Very helpful.
Thanks Barry. Happy it's helpful. You been ok?
@@Guitartomguitar Doing good!
Great video. What is that mute you used ?
A little too much mute on the P sound. Lighter mute will nail it.
Brilliant
thanks Michael
Something you didn't mention, to get the Motown sound from a Jazz Bass with flatwounds and without a pre-amp....set both volume knobs on 8 and turn the tone to zero. I have done many CZcams bass videos featuring this tone. Otherwise, great video, Bro.
Thanks Peter. That's a good tip. I watched some of your videos. Well played man.
Excellent
Yes, or the sixties pop vibe like Carol Kaye, with flatwounds and a felt pick. Makes for a crisp clean, even-handed performance in its own narrow frequency range that can be up in the mix without blasting out the other instruments with long wide booms.
I’m hearing some smearing/modulation on your low E for the P Bass tone demo. This happens to me too when I turn my bass up on the EQ and wonder if anyone has developed some workarounds to get this tone without the pitch getting weird
What's your favourite Jazz Bass Tone Setting? TABS and Guitar Pros for this video are available here tomjohns.gumroad.com/l/zukxvr More detailed bass settings are included in the video description.
Marcus canvas = 70s jazz ash/maple (70 pup spacing, Bart TCT 2 band and DR fat beams with compression. Standard everything else. We all know the real magic comes from him.
Not really a setting, but jazz with flats is incredibly funky!
Or do what my uncle did: wire your pickups in series, and use a few effects to make your tone even fatter and darker, like chorus, slapback delay, a sub-octaver, a little pinch of overdrive, and etc
I think you got close to the p bass sound.
What brand is that mute ?
Please can someone tell me, were to get the Sponge for the Jammerson Sound? thx, MArc
I will always love the jazz bass but I always wanted the music man pickup on my jazz bass. Too bad it didn't quite work out that way. 🤕
Tight
thanks
I find I literally never touch the knobs on my basses. My jazz is always everything 100%. My P is always volume 100% and tone rolled back to the point all the unwanted HF content is gone.
I find when searching for the right tone I get much better results by changing my strings, amp, playing style or set up.
For me a bass there’s normally one setting a bass guitar sounds it’s best, getting the tone you want is then about adapting everything else around that.
To get jaco s sound cut the bass a bit and boost the mid range you ll have tremendous result
thanks
Jaco didn't completely turn off the neck pickup
Marcus always says he turns the tone all the way up then always rolls it back 'just a bit' so to say he has the tone all the way up is incorrect
My P bass sounds much better than that! But I do prefer my J-Bass.........live, though, the P-Bass is super easy - I don't have to think about it....
There's a tone I really really want to nail. Sort of a 70s fusion thing, similar to Jaco's but darker and punchier, almost sounds like a synth bass.
Listen to around minute 41 here, like what is this? Is there some chorus here?

And just a minute each of these. These are both from a 1990 video game, but they are trying to replicate a certain sound with the bass, and I'd love to get somewhere near this somehow...

Please :(
I really don’t like slap, and am not a fan of Jaco. I much prefer Tony Levin or Gail Anne Dorsey.
"[the motown sound] lives today with amy winehouse." I've got bad news for you...
Your Marcus miller setting was weak on the bottom end. Probably need an ash neck
Lol
I hate to tell ya...thats not a p bass tone...its like the poor mans version of a P bass tone. Trust me ive been playing 30 years and thought i wss getting the P bass tone with my jazz...then i got a P. ... yea its similar. But doesn't get the fullness of a real P bass.
Sorry, but that's bullshit!
The bridge pickup alone is useless otherwise you're Pastorious.
The neck pickup is like a weak p.
And both together are drowning in the mix.
In other words.
A Jazz bass is a useless bass.
Get a P and you'll be heard!
if you can't get a great sound out of a jazz bass, you really don't know what you're doing
Wtf this is a joke.
Tell me you can't play without telling me... It's the player, not the tools
Jazz Bass is all in the fingers….crappy players with weak fingers prefer P….greats make a Jazz cut
