  • The now-retired engine number 1223 was one of the first to haul tourist trains on the Strasburg Railroad. Before completing it's career on the Strasburg, this engine worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad and had a feature roll in several Hollywood movies including "Hello Dolly". See this superstar engine come back to life as we watch some home movies taken of it's final days on the rails.

What a shame that 1223 had to retire. How lucky you guys got some final running footage. Also BIG fan of Hello Dolly so learning that was an extra treat!

First, I enjoyed the footage. Is this something that you yourselves have transferred? I'm curious if this was a "professional" transfer or something done at home with one of the various capture cards or usb adapters or a VHS to DVD burner. I ask because I've had great luck having professional transfers from VHS that looked better than I could get with either a "new" VHS player or my high-end 8-head (although admittedly aging) VCR from many years ago. I'd love to see if a company with commercial/high-end equipment could clean that up further. I'd even be willing to fund it as long as you'd be willing to share it here without narration so we can just enjoy the original video/audio uninterrupted.

Hi Mark! We used LegacyBox to convert all our old 8mm film as well as Super8 Tapes. I'm not sure what equipment they use, but we were happy with the quality of the transfers overall, with a few exceptions. If you're interested in that original footage, shoot us an email with what you have in mind. We would be happy to perhaps license or share it. info@railweekly.com

It’s actually pronounced Twelve twenty three, not one two two three

Thank you. I keep hearing that from fans of the engine. I actually grew up riding the Strasburg, and I always heard it referred to as “one two two three” as a kid. I guess both are correct :-)

@@RailWeekly To my understanding, saying "one two two three" is the British way of saying it, since that's how they refer to their locomotive numbers.
