Ok so The Last Of Us Episode 4 is now out and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down all the easter eggs, hidden details and game differences. This sees Joel and Ellie arriving in Kansas City to find it run by a new villain that didn't appear in the original game.
Kathleen brings an extra dimen sion with her and throughout we're gonna be going through everything that happens in the entry.
As always we will be saving game spoilers until the end of the video so you don't have to worry about having clickered on the wrong video.
With that out the way, I'm your host Paul, welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show, now let's get into the video.

Now the entry starts with Ellie aiming the gun that she go from Bills at herself in a mirror. Instantly I got a lot of vibes of Taxi Driver with her now feeling like she's able to handle herself because of it. In the original game Joel forbid her from having one initially and the plot with Bill played out completely differently.
There wasn't the stuff with Frank and thus she couldn't just take one from his home.
It's also important to bear in mind that in this episode Joel says they're in Kansas City whereas in the game it all goes down in Pittsburgh.
We're not in Pittsburgh anymore Dorothy and when I'm talking about the game or show I'll just use them interchangably but it also means that some of the landmarks of the cities are different. For example, in the game you constantly had the yellow bridge off in the background and this acted as a waypoint for you to get to.

This was my favorite part of the episode because they’re finally bonding happily. We could see Joel and Ellie starting to get somewhere with their relationship and to see them bond that way in the hotel is so nice.

I bet that the bloater is going to be the thing that kills Kathleen. Her ignoring it in this episode is going to be a mistake down the road.

@ 5:45 Joel sleeps like that because he has better hearing in his left ear. Because they were laughing and presumably talked themselves to sleep that night, He wound up on his left side and thus could not hear the glass from Henry and Sam. They show him laying on his right side numerous times in the episode, so when you finally see him on the left, you can tell the difference.

the fact that Joel probably learned the whole spreading broken glass trick from watching Mission: Impossible is such a wonderful little detail, since he canonically is a big fan of action movies.
when ellie opened the joke book i immediately had a smile on my face, loved this episode just like the rest
Kansas City is built on a shelf of Limestone. There are massive caves underneath the city, including the largest underground storage facility. Which is where the fungus has been growing and slowly eroding their way into the city. This is why they changed from Pittsburg to Kansas City.
Right - I think the idea is that most of the survivable places that people think "don't have the fungus" are ironically the places that are most infested, the fungus is just underground forming bloaters, rat kings, and root network hubs. It makes you wonder if Kathleen's group actually "overthrew" FEDRA so much as FEDRA decided to abandon the city because it's about to be "Fungi Canyon." I personally would find it really interesting if the writers went so far to structure it as Kathleen being *completely* wrong about what happened with her brother and it wasn't so much that he was this amazing visionary revolutionary who was betrayed in some sort of elaborate conspiracy and it was more like he was just some random infected dude or in the wrong place at the wrong time to them. Or if he was "betrayed" it wasn't by anyone that she thinks and only because he knew the city was about to collapse and *he* wanted to work with FEDRA to evacuate everyone.

I love how the infected aren't in it constantly so their presence feels more scary and intimidating. Whereas walking dead zombies are present constantly and after the first couple seasons they not scary anymore
I see your point, but you can't even say "constantly" for the last 2 episodes - the infected flat out aren't in it at all. There's been amazing writing and character development, but NO infected. They've almost gone too far not showing them, to the point you almost forget they're even a threat 🤷🏽♂️
@@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES. It's consistent world-building. The cordyceps thrives in dark, damp places and requires a constant stream of fresh hosts to thrive.
Most infected don't survive beyond a year or two, so remote, open areas with a very low population density are unlikely to have any living infected running around as they will have died or migrated a long time ago.
The tunnels beneath the city on the other hand are cramped, dark and wet, and tons of people looking for the qz supply fresh hosts, so it's a perfect breeding ground.
The infected are basically an extension of a whole fungus ecosystem that requires specific conditions to thrive
@@GOBIAS.INDUSTRIES. but part of the danger of the open country is that people are far more deadly than the infected. You see that with Bill enjoying a meal and watching an infected get killed for the umpteenth time, to almost dying from a coordinated human attack.

But the infected are a big part of the world and the audience should be reminded of them. I get that they're only around populated areas, but between episodes 3 & 4, they drove from Massachusetts to Missouri... they couldn't have had a clip of them dealing with the infected at some point on the trip? 🤷🏽♂️
@@TonyTylerDraws Even without having The Walking Dead to learn from, which literally ran the "Fight the Dead, Fear the Living" tagline straight into the ground, we understand after a couple episodes that people are more dangerous than the infected.
The infected are what really can set this apart from other "zombie" media. This has an amazing story, but the infected can really take it to another level.
She still has Riley's joke books😭 And it seems to have confirmed she was the one who had to shoot Riley! Crying, screaming, throwing up
That makes sense now!

She said she was alone when bit but hesitant in saying so. Now the first person she’s killed she don’t want to talk about? We gonna get another bill and frank type episode for Ellie and Riley and I reckon when she tells Joel that’s where Joel will open up about Sarah
Riley suggested they lose their minds together so yea most likely.
Though I was initially underwhelmed by this shortest of 4 episodes, the more I think about it the more I like it. I find it really interesting how perceptive and observant Ellie is, pointing out how Joel's hearing from his right ear is deteriorated and the episode ends with him sleeping on his left side with his right ear up.
I also love how when they sleep in the forest Ellie asks if anyone will find them, causing Joel to be paranoid and keep watch all night. Then after the ONE time he lets his guard down and laughs, it ends up almost costing them their lives allowing themselves to be ambushed by Henry and Sam.
The more I think about this episode, the more I like it

They finally made Joel and Ellie bond in a way that is natural. The chemistry was great, and i love how Joel finally laugh thanks to Ellie. Something which he hasn’t done in probably 2 decades
One of my fav moments I’m not hearing anyone talk about is the night they spent in the woods. Joel is trying to sleep until Ellie asks, “Do you think anyone will find us.”
Joel responds, “No, no one is gonna find us”.
Which is sweet because he and the audience both know that he can’t be certain they’re safe. But he gives her comfort and reassurance in telling her they’ll be safe there. A moment which forces Joel to reflect on his failures protecting his loved ones in the past.
The next shot we see is Joel standing guard over Ellie while she sleeps. Setting up that Joel is gonna make damn sure that he doesn’t fail again, that he’ll protect Ellie at any cost.
That moment was indeed great but then it’s undercut by the ending. As if he lets his guard down for a second and pays for it by being ambushed

Finally getting to see them bond with each other and Ellie cracking jokes with him and Joel laughing was good to see in this episode. I hope they show the clickers and bloaters in the next episode since they teased it today

As a KC native I lost it when I saw Worlds of Fun and the downtown skyline. Really cool that I got to see my city in one of my favorite IPs. Haven’t seen KC in a whole lot of media tbh. Especially not a post apocalyptic iteration of the city

Very cool. Literally seeing that sign “Downtown Next 5 Exits” was crazy. KC looks to be in much better shape as a city than Boston. There do not seem to be too many infected, and the infrastructure is far more intact.
When henry and Sam appeared I was so juiced and pumped for the next episode I wanted more

tbh i thinks it’s been much slower paced than i expected and it’s a little disappointing to me. but the episodes have been good in principle, 1st one was the best in terms of the adaptation imo. but i think things are about to get interesting going forwars
Something that was missed in this video is the fact that the voice actor of Tommy, Jeffrey Pierce, in the games plays the role of Perry, the rebel that is with Kathleen during the bloater scene, in this episode.

not really a theory in the show. In the radio and in the intro to episode 2 it was mentioned it broke out in Jakarta at a grain factory. it's one of the largest grain factories in the world, shipping world wide.
They deliberately mention pancakes, bday cake, biscuits and cookies.. all of which they avoided in episode 1.

@@cmc335according to imfdb it’s a Model 70, with black synthetic stock. The model 700 featured in earlier episodes, but I wouldn’t know the difference.
My Mossberg 500 only shoots 12 gauge shotgun rounds. So ya it is not a rifle and does not shoot rifle ammo.

This was my favorite episode yet ! And I think the actor of Ellie definitely is getting better playing her in this episode. Also now I am exited for the next episode with Henry.

The Love's gas station & Arby's sign is on I-80, in Iowa. Drove by it many times, on my way from college to home. Recognized it immediately and was cool to see.
The Arby’s sign giving us a little moment to remember Bill and Frank. 😭 I feel like the message of their story - cultivating love in the middle of the apocalypse - is going to loom over the rest of the season. ❤️🩹

Probably the most interesting part was what worlds of fun looks like in the post apocalypse and that some rides aren’t shown because the apocalypse started in 2003

How?? This show is so damn boring, literally just been dialogue. It's like the worst parts of TWD, and even TWD had more action, suspense, zombies! There are so many better shows
I like how they took some of the details from the Seattle resistance in TLOU 2 and mixed it with Pittsburgh raiders to make it more personable. I'm sure plenty of places had FEDRA wiped out, so it fits.
That's what I was thinking as well. That the many government factions we're shown here to weave in the plotline of part 2 so those various viewpoints don't seem like they come out of nowhere
I loved the camping scene, somehow without a change in music or saying anything that would make you uncomfortable, we see joel debating wether we should sleep. I especially love the shot of the woods, it made ME feel like i was being watched!
To be honest I never heard the diarrhea joke before but goddamn is that funny. This far and no Molotov or scissor taped pipe, still a great episode

20:20, Interesting to note, but one of notes left behind in Pittsburgh detail a vengeful mother intending to attack FEDRA for killing her son no matter who gets hurt while Joel, who only values survival, commenting how pointless her revenge would be since every one would be suffering and dying. This woman may be some kind of adaptation of this mother character, motivated by vengefulness against FEDRA and ultimately becoming even more as cruel and brutal than they were. It would certainly play off the franchise’s themes of people being reduced to savages, even formerly decent people like Joel and Ellie, by the brutal world they live in.
I don't think Joel would've stood guard overnight if ellie didn't ask him for reassurance. You can see the exact moment in that scene when he switched from "smuggler" to "father figure" and it was because she was scared of people finding them

I thought Joel kept facing towards the door so he could hear better. (Since they've mentioned a few times that he's hard of hearing on his right side). In the end, he ended up facing Ellie (he might have rolled over while sleeping) which probably prevented him from hearing the intruders coming in.
Appreciate being able to come to this channel for the greatest breakdowns anyone can ask for.

That's a detail that so few post-apocalyptic stories ever address. The fact that they specifically mention it and have it play its part really contributes to the groundedness of The Last of Us.

It did me too, especially when he asked them to bring him to his mother, and the bit about not being able to move his legs.. Until a moment later when I reflected upon the fact that this same dude was literally in the process of killing Joel... Testament to the acting I guess, even for a smaller role like Bryan's.. Makes you feel something, either way. This show has been pretty damn good at that so far
I guess you would've died in the first month of the apocalypse, there's no place for good and empathic people in a world like that :(
They actually filmed in Kansas/Missouri for some of the driving scenes. I've been to that amusement park "Worlds of Fun" and ridden that roller coaster "The Mamba"
Love how you get everything. Some of the supposed links (like to Taxi Driver) are just that, but so much I didn’t see, like paper headlines, movie names (tried to see them in that case as I knew that would be an egg, but not paying attention enough). Thank you!
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but I feel like the view of Joel looking through the newspaper when we just see his one eye mirrors the image we had in the last episode of the infected that Ellie found looking at her while buried under the rubble. It is like a reminder of the humanity and tragedy of those infected.

At the end of trailer 2 of this show, it shows infected and a bloater running out of a hole. Maybe that hole is the crater the rebels find in this episode.

The episode was amazing I wanted more time. I literally threw my hands dropping the f bomb when the credits rolled. I wanted a bit more screen time for Sam and Henry, but I can wait until next week 😂. Hope there is a backstory scene for the duo, but I'll be fine without one.

The scene with the Diarrhea joke as they hunker down to sleep was the start of Joel thawing towards Ellie. It was a perfect joke, but the delight of the laughter is also a release of tension, anxiety and constant vigilance letting loose. Laughter shared like that bonds people. That was a great scene of an expression of Humanity; shared laughter.

Yeah this is the first episode that doesn't have it's own self contained story. Episode 4 and 5 should definitely be watched back-to-back.

I also hate the fact that she's chubby. No one in this world should be chubby or even muscular as they have been starving for years. Makes the show less believable.
