Omg Matt Conaway is the assistant director for my marching band I didn't realize how many music songs we played by him
Personally, I don't feel like it's rushed at all. Pep band/marching band tunes typically need to be fairly quick to keep interest and match the energy that said bands put out. The recording of this piece may also be deceptive to how the song is intended to sound. Being a marcher in Purdue's AAMB, in which Matt Conaway partly directs and composes for, I can definitely vouch that the sheer power of this song will shine with large bands especially.
In my band, we slowed it down to 180 beats a minute

My friend and I caused our high school pep band to play fire by Jimmy Hendrix in 45 seconds. This song is slow compared to half of the songs in our book
what’s crazy is that people are saying this is fast, but if you conduct it, it’s really not. there’s just a bunch of sixteenth notes making it seem rushed, when in reality it’s not

Hey, bands playing 70’s-80’s music is awesome. We played Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, You Shook Me All Night Long and Dream On in our last show and (minus the trumpets, no offense to the trumpets) we sounded pretty good! I personally wouldn’t want to be playing all the songs in the years 2016-2020 because they suck..
It sounds so much better in person, honestly. Still great, though.
i know it's just me who notices, but arrangements like this always abbreviate horn as "hn." but never abbreviate tuba. why? they're both 4 letters. idk it bugs me.
as a horn player, it's probably because the horn is usually called "horn in f" or "f horn" in scores, so it's more letters than tuba which is never referred to as "tuba in c" or whatever
Exactly, it is usually call horn in f so they abbreviate It. But if you have say like a Eb horn or a b flat horn it will probably say just hn. Just watch out for that but it isn’t that common
My two cents as a tuba player. It is because you can never have too much tuba but you can have too much horn so they have to shorten it to add a visual queue.

Proud2BeAWeirdo XD I’m a fresh meat though and the first time I saw pep band music I wanted to die (metaphorically). I liked playing pep band music ever since 8th grade it’s just difficult and I’m always going to be 2nd or 3rd trumpet because I am the king of succ.
Asianly Communist I’m a junior, first year of marching band was last year (I changed schools last year) and our old pep band songs were so incredibly boring in my old school because nobody was “peppy” but now I LOVE it because there is just so much energy!

people are saying its bad and whatnot but its actually pretty good. being a composer is hard, but judging one is easy and people seem to abuse that power.
He made the rythems more complicated and rushed. Compared to the original this ones worse.
Blu Wolf it’s not rushed.... explain to me how it is rushed. Also, marching band pieces are supposed to be rushed. It engages the audience and makes it fun for the players. Not a single member of band that I know of wants to play a pep band song SLOWLY.. it gets boring

You realize if you March this with other songs you don’t have a lot of time during halftime so it really isn’t that rushed.

I'm in marching and middle school band. I"m waiting till' pep band come around. I'm only in 7th grade and play the Alto Sax. I also wanna do Jazz band for the high school and middle school but, you have to be in 8th grade or higher

If you mean Bari sax its because this is a marching band piece, and marching with a bari sax isn't done often

When I play Bari, I’m given the tuba part. All you need to do is read the tuba part as is, but change the key signature to whatever the alto’s is

Where it says F horn in the beginning don't mind that at all, the other instruments are louder and then the horn is barely heard,besides in orchestras and in solos
If you march at the eighth note, then it would be the right tempo
So basically 166 BPM, where an eighth note gets one beat...

Always a good thing to ask the band director. I was never taught the palm keys on alto sax by my director until I personally asked. But it's been 2 years since your comment so you are probably a sophomore in highschool now lol.

No other choice.. I’m in wind ensemble (I auditioned last year and got in this year) but I can’t even play right now because of COVID. Our school is doing first, second and third periods first semester, fourth, fifth and sixth periods second semester. Wind ensemble is playing next semester and I end up crying a lot because band is the only way to distract me from the outside world. Also, I’m a flute, and I love it 🥰

Tempo may be a few clicks up on the metronome from the original, but the demo group playing it is holding to it. It sounds a little thin to me, but that could be due to a number of factors.

Just on note, if you get this piece from JWPepper.com, the font is soooo tiny that some regular people in my band need it enlarged. I'm albino so I have ALL my music enlarged but this musics font (the paper) is TINEY!!!!
albino is a skin condition, that makes the effected creature unusually white or pale. Can you explain why that has anything to do with your sight?

It’s best to cut to the chase as soon as possible in a pep band score. You gotta keep it flowing and the audience interested.
That’s why half the intro, the second verse, and the second chorus were taken out.
Dunn & Dunn I disagree because adding the entire intro would’ve kept the audience even more ineterested because the first half part of the intro is so beautiful
A Fool’s Baby Bear literally all pep/marching band songs have SOME parts cut out. If we played the ENTIRE song, almost everybody would lose interest. A usual pep song is around 2-3 minutes long just to keep the audience entertained. It’s not so we play the entire song. That’s how marching band songs work

This is a challenge. You know how I know, because my band IS playing this song. It's high school level but I'm pretty good at rhythm and memorization and fast paced songs. Its supposed to be fast. It's hard just to make it sound cooler.

I feel like this doesn't have the energy it should. The tempo is great, but the energy needs to be there. To me, this is more of a song to play in the bleachers.
I can see what you mean. The reason I agree is different, though. I think it's better suited as a stand tune because of the tempo. If you were to march it at the written tempo, it would be quite slow, which wouldn't translate the energy well, and marching in double time could become confusing if you don't chart it right, not to mention strenuous, especially for younger groups.
That’s just how some songs are.. not every song we play has to be a marching song :)
