Basics of Grass Identification and Woodland Grass Identification: Which Grass is Which

Part 1 of the Which Grass is Which? series includes an introduction to grass identification, covering basic terms and tips and tricks to keep in mind when starting to identify grasses. This session is recommended for all participants prior to any of the following sessions. Woodland Grass Identification includes identification of 15 species of woodland grasses in Illinois. While grasses may not be a group of plants you expect to find in abundance in a wooded area, there are still many species of grasses that can be found in our woodlands.

I am Canadian and about pronouncing the Latin names. It might help Americans to understand pronunciation of words in the English language. To understand the 'root' of words and their origins. Now, having said that you pronounce the word as it is spelled. Basically there are no silent letters. Remember not everyone pronounces the Latin names the same and no one beats another up on their pronunciation, usually people who know their Latin will know what species of plant you are speaking about. So relax and just start reading Latin names out loud when reading your text books. This helps and gives you confidence. Breathe deep and just start. I love the Latin language, speaking it will help you understand many words, their origins and their meaning. Good Luck!
