My parents dragged my brother, sister and I to Carnegie Hall where we witnessed the amazing Leonard Bernstein conduct! At age 70 now this movie will help me relive a very special time in my life.

I watched this the day after it aired and was so impressed with Cooper's passion for this portrayal and film. I also came back to it today just to see how Stephen made it through the show with a ruptured appendix! Glad he got such great care and is back on his feet.
I came back, too. Stephen really sucked the pain up hard. That was a ting.
I appreciate that Stephen meets great artists on their level with serious questions.

Yes, Mahler No.2 is life changing and proof of something greater than all of us. That London performance with Bernstein is one of the greatest achievements in human expression.

Ely Cathedral stands in the small cathedral city in north west Cambridgeshire which is despite Cooper's claim, quite far away from London. Even for British standards.
Amazing - I am so impressed with the level of study Bradley Cooper went through in order to be able to depict this icon so accurately. Conducting is way harder than it looks. 👏👏👏. Wow. Can't wait to see this film. I❤Bradley Cooper, he's so talented.
Went and saw the movie at Anglika Theatre this past weekend. OMG, what an amazing performance... I saw Leonard Bernstein when I was a child, the composure, way he talked, and his movement were just uncanny. Thank you for telling such a beautiful story of one of the greatest conductor and teacher of Tanglewood.
If a 50 second clip of Maestro can move me to tears, I will be wrecked after watching this movie. Bradley Cooper will surely win an Oscar for his portrayal of Bernstein!

I can't wait to see this movie! When news first emerged about this movie, I thought, "Seriously, someone is going to portray LB conducting Mahler??" Now, I see the preparation and respect Bradley Cooper had for the project. Can't wait.
When I saw Mr. Cooper in " Limitless " (the film), I knew he was one to watch. When he starts work on a role, few have the tenacity and dedication to performance that he summons for his craft. Keep your eyes on this superstar. He will be in for a long run.
And he will likely do 20 more.

I don’t think Stephen raved enough about this movie. I just saw this film. It is magnificent! It is the best movie I’ve seen in years- it beats Oppenheimer by a league. Cooper has proven himself to be level above all the other pretty boys who act, e.g.m Gosling, Ryan…what’s his name, etc. There were real orchestras and real choirs, and the music made me cry. And the story made me cry. The beauty of it, the challenge of it. The theater was in thrall. You could hear a pin drop. And of course there is laughter and delight. My God what on outsized life Bernstein lived, and what a remarkable, soaring, glorious film Cooper has made about him. Six years he spent. Go see this movie. it won’t be nearly as good on a small screen.
Stephen was literally dying and inso much pain as he was interviewing cooper. His appendix was bursting. Can you blame the guy? 😂

Exactly, and that is something that can kill you. My uncle died from a burst appendix. I don't how Stephen was able to conduct an interview as well as he did.

In the spring of 1972, I was fortunate to see Leonard Bernstein conduct an historic series of Mahler symphonies in Vienna with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.in the Musikverein. All the magical pieces were in place. I was a 22 year old music student. Venue: the Musickverein. The Vienna Philharmonic; Orchestra the VPO , These concerts gave me a life-long experience that still brings chills to me. They video taped these concerts and I think some may be on CZcams. I believe that this concert series was a successful part of Bernstein exposing the Mahler symphonies to a wider concert-going audiences. Of course the VPO was a world-class premiere orchestra. As students we could attend some of the rehearsals (seeing him conduct from behind the orchestra in the balcony.. We students were invited to an after-rehearsal casual party with Maestro Bernstein himself.
It was a life-changing series of mucial events. I was fortunate to see these concerts - the cemented my love of Mahler and Bernstein. At aga 22.
i just watched a couple minutes of the original bernstein conducting the mahler piece in the cathedral and noticed there was a moment while conducting where he hugged himself, which i thought was pretty unusual. and i see that in bradley's rendition he made the exact same gesture, which i think is kind of remarkable.
Decades ago, at the beginning of my university life, I was exloring classical music with amazing enthusiasm and I fell in love particularly with one symphony, Brahms's 4th.
I was slowly collecting version after version to compare the famous 4th movement.
The guy at the CD shop, an imposing, tall stout bald man, kept his shop in complete utter chaos. It was horrible and fantastic at the same time because it forced you to literally dig through stacks and stacks of CDs to find what you were looking for.
I asked him if he received some new version of Brahms 4th and replied asking me why I was so interested. "My favourite symphony, of course, that's why. Which symphony is you favourite?".
"Mahler's second" he said.
"Too long", I thought.
"Maybe in the future you'll change your mind" and he went on with his business.
The fact is that Mahler's 2nd, for you that never heard of it, lasts some 90 minutes and 1 single CD at most can store some 75 minutes so the symphony must be split in two parts.
For some reasons, I always tried to listen to it but alwasys stopped at the first CD, the first four out of five movements.
In retrospect, that's crazy, I know, but life's like that sometimes.
I still adore Brahms' 4th symphony but ask me to choose the best 8-10 minutes in symphonic music and, the moment I am writing now I have goosebumps, the best "total body experience" moment in the whole repertoire is the finale of Mahler's second.
Now that decades have passed, I love the whole symphony, from start to end... but the beauty of the first, say, 80 minutes, is also that they are leading to an end to all ends.
And it's true that when you watch the video with Bernstein conducting this part, that's a show in the show.
If you don't know this music, take your time, don't do this in a hurry, do it alone and let go, enjoy every tragic moment and finally explode of extasy in the end.
If you are a methodic person, first look for YT channel "Inside the score": there's a fantastic analysis of the Symphony.
Then go with Bernstein or Dudamel (but there are many other...) versions.
It's not guaranteed, but IT COULD change your musical life.
Great. Thank you for your passion. I have had a similar experience. For me it was Mahler 9th. After hearing all of them I could get 'my ears on' I still have to go to James Levine's version 1979 and sorry, I am a record guy, the 4th movement is 29min long but, gladly(!) on one record side. (When it finishes I vaporize into atoms, if this makes sense but is in contrast to Mahler 2nd. To each their own.)

For me it was also the finale of the Mahler second, until I got the chance to sing Kurwenal in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, where the 3rd act left me in tears while on stage. I simply couldn't stop myself from sobbing. It was very unprofessional but I never, ever felt like this before in my life. One other opera that can make me lose my feeling of time and space is Parsifal... An inexplicably astounding piece of music that makes 4.5 hours of music feel like it took an hour to listen to it and simultaneously like whole lifetimes are passing by in eternal quest of spiritual redemption. No wonder Wagner didn't call it an opera but rather Bühnenweihfestspiel, expanded translation would be: a festive play for the consecration of the (holy) musical theatre stage
Bradley@ is a different breed is he. I can't imagine wearing different hats all at the same time. Props to him.

I observe, as a personal holiday I made up for myself, the anniversary of the first time I heard Mahler 2 live. It was the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center, July 9, 1970. The conductor was: Leonard Bernstein.
Wow, I think that was the only time Bernstein conducted Cleveland from what I've read. I have a recording I believe taken from a radio broadcast, but being there live would have been memorable. I also didn't realize what a strong influence George Szell was on Lenny (saw an interview where he says how much he admired Szell which, to be honest, kind of surprised me given their different styles).

The conducting scene gave me chills throughout. When the clip ended, the chills ended. I never experienced anything like that before.

Saw many symphonies as a child. The only one that really grabbed me was a Mahler. The 9th I think.
An epic "Raging Bull" type of transformation. I barely recognize Bradley. Robert De Niro gained something like 50 lbs for the role. Looks like Bradley lost 50. Looking forward to the film, bigtime!

We at Martha’s Vineyard Sailing Camp would race against Leonard Bernstein’s children. He came to our bean supper and I waited on him. It was extra thrilling for me because that year in high school I sang a soprano solo from West Side Story.

I posted a video about Leonard Bernstein on my CZcams channel that documents what he was really doing on stage as a conductor. There's a phenomenon in the press where they pick 2 or 3 classical musicians and designate them as sacred cows. No matter what the sacred cows do on stage, the press refers to it as "the greatest." Bernstein was one of those sacred cows. The television appearances he did show him adding trumpets to the orchestra with Beethoven's symphonies and then when the interviewer asks him about Beethoven's ability to orchestrate, he says, " IT'S BAD. He has the trumpets sticking out and they're drowning out everybody else!"
Feels like this movie was part of a divine plan meant to be part of Mr. Coopers life.

Bernstein's "Conducting" was always exceptional. He had good intentions and big emotions, but this type of conduction only could work with pro-orchestras, which actually doesn't need a conductor. 🎉
As a person who's sung in large choruses with orchestras accompanying, the conductor generally is a figure head more than anything (even in smaller less professional groups too who rehearse together regularly). You usually memorize the dynamics and the lyrics and the rhythms so the conductor basically just keeps the tempo (but you as the musician keep the tempo with your own body also). The only time a conductor is actually needed for a final performance is if the group just got the piece or had minimal rehearsal time and didn't know it.

@@HouseMDaddict Wouldn't you say it is the other way around? You basically go with the internal flow of the tempo, and the conductor shows everything else, the intensity of sound, phrasing, energy and character?
Does the conductor rehearse with you, help bring the orchestra to a unified vision of what the performance will feel like?

He had a ruptured appendix while running the interview - whisked off to surgery just afterward! I don’t think Steven is intimidated by anyone; just having a very bad night. Could have died if he hadn’t gone to the hospital.
