Today's WTA could never. The level of this match was more impressive by the fact that this final was right on the eve of the start of the AO. Back then, top players committed to playing tournaments the week before a slam and went all out to try to win.
Not to mention that the skill, agility, flair, creativity that can be seen in this video do not live on the WTA anymore.
They were so closely matched, off both sides, neither one had control of the match, it was a war of attrition. Spectacular play from both.
Schiavone is underrated. Her win at Roland Garros was surprising, however completely deserved, and she confirmed the year after by reaching the final again. She sometimes struggled against the power hitters, but overall her grit, fight and athleticism was among the best.

Insanity what these two ladies could produce. She forced Justine to relax and produce at a superb level to overcome the wall that Schiavone builds.
Does anyone else think this is an amazing angle from which to view? It’s lower and you can actually see the height and speed of the ball over the net. I really wish they adopted this as the primary viewpoint for both WTA and atp matches
