  • I saw her at a roadside bar in Soi 4, right outside Nana plaza, Bangkok, Thailand, the "world's largest adult playground." When she saw me, she smiled. I waved her over and bought her a tequila shot.
I went there because it's the best place to sit and drink and smoke and watch the endless tourists and streetwalkers. The sweaty desperation and constant stalking eyes. I wanted a lonely night. Just observing.
But she was so funny and playful, and severely ESL (English-second language) but weirdly it made her enjoyable to talk to. I bought her one more tequila.
Then she told me her name: Apple.
Obviously, not her real name. I asked her why she chose it and she said she likes apples.
I told her, "I'm not a normal tourist. I have very special needs."
She told me she's fine with anything.
So, I paid the bar fine and took her out and got a taxi back to my hotel. She entered my room and asked if we could take a shower together, but I told her no.
I took out a copy of Paradise Lost by John Milton, which had cost me 100 baht ($2.80) at a bookshop in the Chatuchak market.
"I told you I'm not a normal tourist."
    "Okay," she said.
