It's no secret that the world saw Coko as the face of SWV, but that didn't mean the rest of the group saw it that way. Don't miss Unsung featuring SWV---Wednesday at 8/7c on TV One!
Yeah not how it works. You have to deliver a product at the cost of the label. Your job is to work on it til they are satisfied. It’s not an hourly job. But artists were robbed of money all the time. 0.01 cent per album sold lol
@@joelgarcia3907 we all kno artist don’t make much from streaming platforms and albums sales. Their main money comes from touring. And the lowest an artist can make per sale is 2 cents.
Exactly, You think the record company would have invested there time and MONEY on ppl who couldn't sing!! I'm glad you and I know what the truth is...all the other ppl are just talking because they a tongue in their mouth lol
Ariel Brown lmao I'm one of them, I never liked sisters with voices, idk not a hate or anything just a preference.... but they can sing and it's that harmony they have that makes them them
Great point. RCA would never have signed SWV if they thought Lee Lee or Taj couldn't sing. It just more since to promote Coko as the lead cause the "one lead singer" group was what everyone other 90's group at the time was doing!
Right! The other girls and folks that could sing are straight gaslighting Coko by mentioning that the other girls could sing. Their music producers and record noticed something special in Coko's voice that separates her from the group. The other two girl's voices are basic asf.
It’s like Jermaine & Michael Jackson. Jermaine can sing down and sing better than most people but he just doesn’t have what Michael had and no matter how hard he worked at it he wasn’t going to ever have what Michael had. It’s just something special about Michael voice and the same with Coco
@@ms.bubs4fun506 That's harsh but a lil true but every girl group for it to be a memorable group should have at least one unique voice that no other group has and Coko was SWV's weapon of choice and like TLC had T-Boz and even Fith Harmony who had Camila Cabelo etc. Coko should have been compensated for more work tho wtf.
@@Gonkmmm idk of tlc is a good comparison. While Tboz was most definitely main singer idk if she was truly the leader of the group or if there was one. All 3 brought something very unique to the table and without one it wouldn't be the same. When I heart TLC u know who t boz left eye and chili are when u hear swv u may know who coko(though even then u might not) is but it took me a while to even know who the other 2 where. (Though that is likely due to marketing and personality.) U hear tlc u know who they r indvidualy and together especially their personality(it's like a tripod without one leg it doesn't work). U hear swv and u think of the sound first. Not a bad thing in the slightest it's an amazing sound but not them as ppl.
I love Coko, her voice is amazing and she is beautiful however if it was all about her singing then she would have made it further as a solo R&B singer not Gospel singer. So what that tells me is that Le Lee and Taj made a big impact in the group
Annnnnnnnnd scene. Even Coko made it clear that SWV is known for their harmonies. Not every lead singer can be a solo singer - and although I believe Coko can be and IS both, it seems that the streets didn't agree at the time.
Tell that to Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls. She recorded the entire first PCD album by herself and her solo career didn't really work out either. It's the right song, at the right time, in the right package and with the right promotion. Coko has more than enough talent to be a great solo act.
In other words, the producers loved Coko because she could knock out songs quick. Whereas, the other members took hours to record a song. They probably saved money with Coko singing most of the songs.
There is an episode of them singing on New York Undercover that truly displayed all their vocal ability. They have the best blend that I have ever heard in any group. When they all sang their parts collectively and seperately, you almost could not tell them apart. The difference is Coko's voice is higher, Leelee and Taj have a lower, richer tone, which rounded out their sound as a group nicely. Their singing style is so similar, you would think it's just Coko, that's how well they have perfected their singing together. Coko singing solo, she tends to sing in a higher range. That's why I believe they sound their best as a group because Leelee and Taj make the sound well rounded.
True. Coco voice IS SWV. I didnt even know the other 2 could sing. 🤔. Let me look them 2 up to see/listen. The other two sure didnt sing any hooks at the versus, they did backup the ENTIRE night🤔
@@Director2024 But Kandi had a distinctive voice and tone similar to T-Boyz in TLC. Kandi carried the bottom harmony. It was millions of girls who could sound like The Scott sisters but nobody sounded like Kandi that's why their comeback EP without Kandi flopped and was terrible. But they can do anything wothout Tocha bc Tameka can take her parts and be just as good if not better without those sloppy and unnecessary runs
@@AngeBiampandou I feel like Xscape could have just be 3 of them Tiny, Kandi and Tamika. They blend well and are actually friends. Coko's tone and her skills is what made her earn the lead singing role. Some singers standout with their tone and some standout with how they showcase vocals. Kandi's voice is the brand of the group but she's not necessarily the best singer.
@@eleeveeayees3425 Oh yeah, I know don't get me wrong. I never said or even implied Kandi was the best singer/vocalist of the group at all. She has the most distinctive tone but she's nowhere near the best objectively speaking. But some voices are too common to make a group standout tho
I absolutely think Coko should've been compensated more than the other girls. The other two girls could sing but Coko could SANG! Coko's beautiful voice and tone was the trademark for SWV. Coko is what made them stand apart from the other girls during that time.
That’s when problems in groups start. If you want a girl or boy group to fall apart, start treating them differently. Either way, if I was the other group members I would not agree. It’s not my fault you’d rather have someone else re-record the vocals when I know dang on well I can sing... just a matter of choice. Cause you know paying her more would affect the pocket of the other ladies
You should listen to "Use your Heart" or "I can't take it" I think that's what its called. Those songs showcase Taj and Le Le's talent with them playing lead. They all can sang. The main guy who wrote many SWV songs outright said in an interview his intent was to craft many of the vocals around coco because he felt she was the lead and wanted to take it back to the girl groups of yesterday.
@@imsoshaniece5320 That's what I got too. And even if she did get used to do more of the work vocally, I'm pretty sure on some level she enjoys being known as the one with "The Voice" out of the group.
Coko had a legit point. If you listen to the hook of Weak, for instance, you can tell Coko’s part(s) had to be done in multiple takes over multiple sessions. Taj & Leelee’s parts sound like they were done in 1 session. Lots of their songs are like this. Even in songs like All About U (from New Beginning) they TRIED to showcase the other 2 but the song was just flat and they HAD to add a bridge & ad-libs from Coko to make it a “SWV” sound...
Coko was clearly the strongest vocalist and was the lead singer. I would like someone to explain why they think that she didn’t deserve this acknowledgment and COMPENSATION.
There is always a lead singer or a person who gets more solo vocals in a group or band, but that doesn't mean that they deserve to get paid more. All the members contribute to the success. When they're performing live, all the mics are on. No one person can carry a live show by themselves. SWV harmony is unmatched. Certain producers wanted Coko to do all the work, not the group.
You have to understand They sing lower than Coko n Lelee can sing high she just dont you have to listen to New Begginings album because it showed alot of high n lows from the singing
I hate to say this, but there are some incredibly fabulous, powerhouse singers who just don't resonate that well with the public as solo performers. They need the textured, layered, packaged look and sound that fronting a group delivers. To that end, you kind of have to split the money equally even if the lead singer does most of the vocal work. The public is getting something significant from seeing the group members as a package. That's why a lot of groups never break up even though the lead singer could go solo.
I don't think people realize how difficult recording can be and when you are doing lead and backing too? Chile, that's some serious work! I agree that Coko should have been paid more for doing more work. No shade towards the other ladies but fair is fair.
Sadly it appears these record companies would rather the artist fight over who is doing more and what they deserve in comparison to other group members, than pay them all a fair amount based on what they earned in sales.
Do ya research taj has a great distinctive voice, I'm pretty sure RCA, which is a elite record company would have not signed those girls lelee or taj if they couldn't sing... furthermore taj had many leads, a true swv would know that for example, she co leads with your the one, use your heart, new beginning intro, from the Christmas album she co-leads, o holy night and silver bells she leads songs like, all about you, lose my cool, give it up featuring lil Kim... and then co leads with there two unrealeashed songs mystery and surprise... while lelee leads the other one can't cope.... you don't have to be a high note hitting singer to be considered a good one...she has a great voice....and if you didnt think so RCA damn sure did.... I know for a fact RCA wasn't Finna waste time and money on somebody who didn't have talent....90's where the time of pure talent no auto tone... you either had it or u didn't
Yes back then it was all about singing live and upfront... now yes they may do it.... back then they perform live and acoustic then they do now...more artists have studio voices but sound like bullshit live....Toni Braxton and her sisters started off as a group, But laFace records only wanted Toni because her voice was low great and different from all the high note hitting female artists...with that being said if they only wanted coko trust and believe me she was the only one that would have gotten sign trust me
Vocally Taj could sing and proves herself on Give It Up and Getting Funky (Third cd)...Taj has a very unique distinct vocals that no other singer had out at that time. Lee Lee vocals are unique as well.....a different New York accent. So people cant say Coko was the voice of the group..the group was made of three different vocalist..one who was the lead and the other two supporting backing vocalist.
Coko definitely not doing all that Harmony herself. THE BACKGROUND vocals on weak made it very special. They song it live all the time and sound jist like the record-3 voices!
Coko obviously had the best voice. LeLee and Taj had their moments but singing was not their specialty. Coko's singing had a distinctiveness and power to it that made the songs what they were with the beat and background harmonies. That's why I do agree that Coko should've been paid more. She did most of the work. Plain and Simple
You made a good point...but I understood Lee Lee opinions. She states on Unsung that all three perfomed equally and recorded together as a group so she thought all three did there parts as a group. And even when the contracts were signed that Coko got more money they (Coko and Tibba Gamble) got what they wanted but now they wanted to change everything.
Even today Coko is STILL singing her face off live while half the time Lelee doesn't even have the microphone within range of her mouth while lip-synching to back-up vocals on stage.
coko, lelee, and taj can sing. they all have nice and beautiful voices. coko sings lead so of course she get more attention, her voice is beautiful and distinctive too but it wouldn’t be swv without lelee and taj period lol!
Ok Coko is the voice of SWV. But if u listen to their albums after Its About Time u will hear more of Lelee & Taj on leads etc. Taj & Lelee can sing & has contributed to the SWV sound but dont get the credit. These girls sing alot more parts than you non SWV fans think. SWV is overall the best girl group of the 90s!! Their music catalog is better than the other groups. #Facts
Exactly! I listened to that album for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was actually surprised that it isn't at all dominated by Coko. I would have to go through it again song by song and really pay attention to confirm but it FELT like all three of them were singing leads throughout the album.
I think most folks realised Coco was the heart of SWV and I don’t believe the other members would dispute she has a unique voice which is suitable for lead vocals.
Taj's mindset has held her back. 'This is what I was given, this is what I can give you'. That statement embodies the issue at hand and why her vocals have not improved. If she sought out the help of a good vocal coach and put in the time her voice would be better in terms of range etc. She would not be Coko but have her own vocal identity.
So true! However, I also believe that not only Taj's lack of broadening her vocal range, etc., but different attitudes problems of the three ladies and various life circumstances came into play as well!😚
Also, Leelee and Taj have NO DRIVE which is why they never really was put on leads or had a successful solo career. They are parasites that got fed off Coko's talents and hard work, then had the nerve to gaslight the imbalanced work load by saying "I can sing too."
So true because those vocals on the still album was horrible from taj and leelee and because of the fact that they recorded it in 2 weeks made it even worse smfh
There are some SWV songs that are basically solo Coko records. You hear her voice in both the lead and overwhelming the harmonies, while the other two either aren't there or are very, very faint. "Anything" and "Give It To Me" are the two biggest examples. You don't do that. If Coko is the lead singer, fine...but having her stack and multitrack harmonies was basically a covert way of saying that the other two members weren't necessary.
You are all very talented and Taj is especially nice as a person ... Coko is vocally very gifted and has a special voice ... I see Coko gets her outstanding beauty from her Mom
The saying goes '10% of something is more than 100% of nothing'. Taj and Lelee should've given Coko the rights to a bigger cut knowing she doing the most work. I'm sure they could've worked something out that was fair to everybody
I love da fact that coko wasn’t selfish and wanted da other girls to sing it’s sad she didn’t realize she had da best voice not only that if I was da manager I would put her as lead on every song as well
its so funny cos i developed an ear for the girls just by thrashing their albums.... i could break it down in a minute as far as who sang what... BUT WHO CARES!!! they came as a package deal so it shlda been split 3 ways... and just to flip da script - my fav jam on RST was give it up and coko didnt even sing on that... so it goes both ways...
Interesting to note however, that SWV's biggest chart-toppers were singles where Coko sang lead exclusively. Singles where Taj sang lead ("Use Your Heart", "It's All About U", "Lose My Cool", etc.,) did not fare nearly as well on the charts or in terms of sales. Why is that? Because the public didn't want that formula. So if Coko's vocals were taking SWV to the top of the charts--and it's clear she was dominating the background vocals AND the lead--why wouldn't they compensate her accordingly? It's called labor. She put in more labor than Taj and LeLee in terms of production. Time equals money and recording over other people's vocals AND doing your own leads takes up a lot of time. If Taj and LeLee did their thing and Coko was brought BACK to the studio after the fact to do more recording then she deserved more $$$. It's simple.
CDJINT nonononono its called loyalty... i bet before they got their record deal if lelee and taj said what u just said, coko would of just rolled her eyes and said "whatever! we sisters we splittin it 3 ways" ... taj said it best - coko became greedy.. they made millions and coko still wasnt happy with that she wanted more...
But Zeebo89 loyalty runs both ways: Let's say I was in a group and we recorded a song until 6:30pm. Two of us went home at 7pm. If I knew another group member stayed behind in the studio to keep on recording well past midnight I would not be complaining about them being paid more. They're working overtime. Especially, if they are recording over my vocals to round them out. If anything, as a true friend I'd want my friend to be compensated because they're busting their ass for MY success. THAT'S how loyalty works. Only a selfish person would accept the rewards of that group member's 12 AM efforts but be upset that they were compensated for "working overtime".
You have a valid point however, recording in the studio is not an on going process and for the most part the girls never recorded their vocals together at the same time... they were probably trying to save money or something cos lelee said it was quicker for coko to do it cos she was already there. if u gon come at it from that point of view well then lelee should of asked for more money cos it was her that busted her ass to assemble the group... lelee is responsible for whole Bowden era that noone ever mentions and that was crucial to their development prior to them signing to rca. hell even coko admitted she couldnt be bothered with the business side of things well guess what diva, if it wasnt for lelee your chicken head would still be runnin roun the bronx with your box cutter tryna cut somebody.... js
But why would LeLee get a comission fee for assembling the group? I don't think that one-time action in 1991 outweighs Coko's multi-layered recording efforts over the course of several years (1991-2015) and every SWV album released since then, does it? Coko is STILL recording the backgrounds over the other girls down to this day. And there's nothing wrong with that! But it's like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not taking credit from LeLee or Taj--God knows I adore them and they also bring a necessary balance to SWV. But let's keep it real: Coko was the absolute and unequivocal key to their success. She has always carried them in a way that Beyonce never had to carry DC or the ladies of En Vogue never did. All things were not equal in SWV Zeebo--we know this! Without her unique voice SWV would never have reached the top of any chart. Yes, I agree with you: LeLee's group idea turned their eyes towards a brighter future. But it was Coko's voice that KEPT them out of the hood. :)
Coko and lelee in my opinion are the best singers in the group and lelee can go just as high as coko but she just don't and she never was giving the opportunity to do so.
@@oburney2607 I'm just asking you to tell me how you know she can sing as high as Coko. Can you suggest some songs where she is singing in the soprano range in her chest register?
At the end of the day …… it’s a business…. Regardless of your feelings and opinions…. The producers know what sells…. They needed the other girls for harmony during live performances…. But they knew Coko was the voice of the group… and they knew they had to market them that way or they would not be where they are today….
I think artists underestimate background, stacking vocal parts, and sound mastering to get that perfect sound there is alot more underlying work then they think
I agree with her mom. She should’ve been paid more. Although Taj and Lele play a huge part in the group and it wouldn’t be a success without them. We can’t really deny that if they switched the group around and made one of them the lead singer it would probably not be as successful. Also, if I’m doing the most work I need to be getting paid the most.
Honestly, I don’t blame coko… Lelee and Taj sing about as good as an amateur act or someone doing karaoke by themselves… not even being funny, it’s just the truth. Coko comes off like she acts like a diva… But you can tell even now, she’s the one that has to put in all of the REAL work.
No lie, if i was the lead, i would feel away if i was the voice of the group. My other members needed to produce, write or something. Otherwise, it's only right I get more coins. If they don't want to give me more $$$, I'll still be part of the group but ill take occasional features with other artists or get in on the writing when I went back to the studio.
For what it was, SWV were good in the parts that they played. Now record companies don’t care to compensate someone for doing more work unless u have a separate deal for that. Otherwise, they just care that it sells.👍🏾
At the end of the day if she had to put in more studio time than the other girls so they could lace her voice in over their backgrounds and do extra vocals no matter the reason, she should’ve been compensated more for it
She is the group PERIOD !!! Lol they know that !! They know damn well el they are not powerful vocalist like cocky koko 🤣 they sound crazy making excuses for the lack of vocals
I also believe Lee Lee. Others in music were telling Coko she should leave the group and go sólo for a bigger career in music so she thought she didnt need them....and i betcha it was Tibba Gamble who bought to RCA she should get half the money because she was doing way more...as far as recording and studio sessions than Taj and Lee Lee. But like Coko said those two signed the contract so they knew Coko was going to be making twice and much as they did.
Eriq7001 Lelee & Taj have contradicted themselves over the years. Taj have said many times that she did not want to sing lead and was fine singing background (similar to Tamika Scott from Xscape). Lelee have also said many times that she wasn’t comfortable singing lead and that she was very lazy. They can’t say this then turn around and say Coko was singing all the leads and all the attention was on her. Y’all never showed that y’all was hungry.
Downtown_NY45 Taj and LeeLee did say those statements but i dont think they were mad she sang lead. They were upset about how the money was divided and they should have spoken out. They all three recorded and performed..why should Coko get half the money? People forget they had to pay a lot of money to the song writers, particularly on the first cd so with groups theres not too much to for anyone to get the bigger share.
Lola Renee There is so many reasons why Coko was not successful as a solo artist...however there are not many singers who have successfully left a group and recorded and released so many solo albums. Patti Labelle is the only singer that comes to miind.
Eriq7001 the reason why coko should get more is because she does more work. Even when they perform live coko has to use her voice the most and put mad vocal strain on her voice when they are on tour, i would’ve agreed to give her more too.
Say what u like but CoKo’s voice was allllll over the backgrounds on their first few albums. STILL & I MISSED US all of SWV can be heard. The background vocals still sound great but there is a difference and it’s less lush sounding.
One of the main issues of SWV was that in 1997 1998 thé group was overworked and overscheduled. They released two différent cds in 1997 and it was obvious that thé group should call it quits. Also what bothered me was thé fact that Coko and her mother Tibba Gamble felt like Coko should get half of thé money....although thé group uséd songwriters for their biggest hits and all three equally performer and contributed vocals. That was a major issue....Coko felt since she was doing supposing all the work in the studio (lead singing) she should get half the money or quit the group.
Eriq7001 Do you think SWV would have been much bigger if Coko didn’t get pregnant? I absolutely think so. I feel like ‘1995 was the year for Mary J, TLC, and Biggie. I think SWV would of been right at the top with them. However things happen for a reason.
Downtown_NY45 The reason SWV was not bigger was the second cd was released 4 years after there first one. Many people assumed the group was over with or disbanded....in 1995 they only had one song, All Night Long on Waiting To Exhale..4 years was too long of a time to release new music.
@@Eriq7001 Lol how old are you? The ONLY thing that you are correct about is that SWV waited too long to release their second album, but as far as people thinking the group “was over with or disbanded” is far from true. How could that be the case when they were on the road touring at sold out stadiums, performing at award shows, and making guest appearances on TV shows (Arsenio Hall, BET Jams, MTV Grind, Teen Summit, The Apollo, Video Soul, Ricki Lake, The Tonight Show, Video LP, The Maury Show) just to name a few. Also, they didn’t just have one song during that time span, they worked on several projects with other artists, such as Blackstreet “Tonight’s The Night” remix, the “Panther” movie soundtrack, along with a lot of other records that were not released. (Not to mention, they had Coko recording demos for other artists). You couldn’t turn on the television without seeing these girls, so what makes you think people thought they disbanded? 😂 Y’all have to stop saying anything on the internet. If you don’t know anything about SWV just say that!
Coko was the best singer, hands down...she should have been paid more...and group members should have been honest about he abilities also thankful that her voice led them to fortune...but they call looked so pretty together...nice dance moves...Leelee, is not being honest!🧡🧡💗💗
It seems like Coko was doing at least 85% of the vocals. That's kind of a shame because all three of them can sing. But maybe it worked out for the best.
Let’s be honest....if you listen to most SWV records all you hear is Coko as the lead and background vocals. You will hear LeeLee and Taj every now and then. I personally think that they werent as confident in their vocals as Coko was. You can tell that in their live performances. However, I love hearing the other members sing because their voices added to Coko rich voice
If you listened the last two full length cds by SWV, its obvious that Coko singing lead is no longer required or is no longer the signature sound of SWV. Its three different singers, three different voices, three different New York accents. The new sounds showcase the vocals like never before. Yes Coko is still the strongest polished singer of the the group, but people cannot sidetrack Lee Lee and Taj. They are strong singers to and can hold their wieght. Perefct Example "If Love Didnt Hurt" (2016) Lee Lee started the ballad HER WAY and ENDED it HER WAY.
That's the reason they didn't sing leads on the it's about time album because they wasn't confident in there vocals but leelee and taj showed up and showed out on the new beginning album cause they wanted ppl to know they could sing
@@DaInfamousRo Also Brian Alexander Morgan, who probally was in love with Coko, only wanted her to sing lead. So the group.just got used to that formula. It was their signature sound.
They relied on Coko too much the management should have encouraged them to at least sing a verse, if you only sing harmonies and backing vocals then you're stuck there.
@@Eriq7001 What's your measure of no longer required? Those last 2 albums were no where near as successful as the ones where Coko sang lead in most of the songs.
I think Coco was like the Ralph Tresvant of the group. From the outside looking in I would assume she did get paid more bc she sang lead on majority of the songs. I wish her solo career took a greater path. This is why it makes sense for the Michael Jacksons and Beyoncé s to break away and start building their solo career. Otherwise you will end up doing most of the group project with no extra compensation...and I like them all but still have to call ot what it is.
Monique McCowan It was on at czcams.com/video/4JbQQFC-8VA/video.htmlm00s this morning. It's on cable so the network going be showing repeats all month long.
+Monique McCowan i saw unsung last night...Its not on CZcams yet..Its on thé tv one web site. this unsung was great....covered à lot of basés on the issues with swv.
Vocally, what Coko did was not uncommon in Girlbands. Beyonce of Destiny's Child, Adrienne of 3LW, Nadine of Girls Aloud, & plenty of other bands favored the Lead Singer in terms of Multitracking. Basically they'd sing the entire song alone as a demo & later rerecord their vocals with the other members, or they'd record as a group & the Lead would sing additional vocals later to enhance theirs. Nicole of Pussycat Dolls recorded the entire Doll Domination album by herself, before the remaining members were added. While LeeLee & Taj were vocally gifted, Coko has a unique timbre that rarely requires support.
coko never wrote anything significant enough to justify a larger portion of the lion share, she wrote "a bit" of youre the one with taj and a few other writers and maybe a couple more... thats it!
***** you missed the point. coko was one of about 5 people who wrote 1 song mayb 2 thats it... thats not alot of money.... im assuming coko wanted a whole lot more....
***** my take on original post: trying to get clarity on why coko wanted more money and more often than not, in groups the only way a member gets more is by writing... so the question was asked if coko wrote and you said yes... so your reply insinuated that cokos demand for extra dosh was justified cos she wrote. im just sayin that coko didnt write much to warrant more money thats all... cheers
That's generally true but listening to a majority of their songs it was clear that Coko was the best singer so she did lead. However, unlike other groups, most of SWV hit songs sounded like Coko and background singers. She even overpowered them in the background vocals. Maybe producer decision? I felt she should've got paid more regardless
This is just envy rearing and jealousy reading their twin ugly grads. I see the manipulation of men based on their base desires concerning sex, control and money. And I see Media caping after the frailties of individuals and these flawed institutions. Everyone knows by now how dirty the business of music is! I really expect more of TVOne. SWV is still a great group, still doing wonderful shows and Praise God: Koko’s lead vocals are still outstanding. What remains is the strength of that group dynamic, put together by Leelee ( Salud!) but it is those three sisters with voices that we all adore. That love will prevail long after all of us are long gone. The musical legacy is spotless. Leave it alone.
Equity - equitable - the three of them could work out the terms of their group management to determine how proceeds are distributed - this is none of our business whatever they decide is fair - as far as who sings best, its relative, at the end of the day as are most opinions, the larger majority would say of course Coko has the superior vocal range
Their harmonies is undeniably super great... Especially the live ones, where we can all clearly see that those ladies were special, people just need to chill and not detract from other group members, even in movies, the supporting actors are just as important to the script as the main leading hero.
Lelee and Taj could sing back then when they were younger, but now their vocals are fading just because they were not doing lots of lead, which means that they didn't work on their vocals as Coko did
Yep and Lele has said this she said on the Verzus she was the one who taught Coko her range because Lele voice could do it but Lele lost it overtime she can't go as high she joked she gave all of her soprano to Coko
i dont care if coko was upset about doing more work for vocals.... those songs they recorded wouldnt sound the same if taj or lelee had dont some lead verses... the girls need to look past that. its music... its creativity... it was the 90s... it sounded cool... MUSIC LIKE THAT DOES NOT SOUND THE SAME NOW A DAYS
If I had to be called back in the studio to re-record vocals for hours, of course I would want more money. That's extra work.

Ariel Brown say that!!!! All of them can sing. And the gag is Coko when you did go solo, what happened? Right, so lead or not your in a group. Period.
I agree 100%!
Coko looks just like her momma and coko son looks just like her. 3 generations look a like
these comment though lol....all can sing but its no secret who sings best; its something special about CoCo's voice. you know it when you hear it
JayDrake When God put that special dropping in you. you stand out and you’re going to always be a target is that simple
How is it that Coko's mother looks the same age as her.
Umm, Good BLACK don't crack ok?
GOOD GENES, AWESOME GENES
Her mom looks fantastic
Agreed!
I was thinking the same thing
Coko' s voice is the sound of Heaven!
Yep, I love Coko's voice!😍😚
Yes. It's beautiful and unique.
coko mom is beautiful looks just like her ☺️
No question Coco deserved more money
I love Coko, her voice is amazing and she is beautiful however if it was all about her singing then she would have made it further as a solo R&B singer not Gospel singer. So what that tells me is that Le Lee and Taj made a big impact in the group
Well, she did go solo for one album & that was all she wrote. I don't even think that thing went gold. If it did, that was "at BEST."
Annnnnnnnnd scene. Even Coko made it clear that SWV is known for their harmonies. Not every lead singer can be a solo singer - and although I believe Coko can be and IS both, it seems that the streets didn't agree at the time.
Most definitely! I keep telling people just because someone isn't a soprano singer doesn't mean she can't sing
Tell that to Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls. She recorded the entire first PCD album by herself and her solo career didn't really work out either. It's the right song, at the right time, in the right package and with the right promotion. Coko has more than enough talent to be a great solo act.
@@AllGreyEverything exactly
Coco look so much like her mother ❤️
In other words, the producers loved Coko because she could knock out songs quick. Whereas, the other members took hours to record a song. They probably saved money with Coko singing most of the songs.
Period that's the reason plus coko has a signature sound
Makes sense
but working out background parts and harmonies takes time and requires all the girls
Right...
They have to use additional equipment to help the other girls sound good.
Thats not what was said...
Well said ❤❤❤❤
Amen ❤❤❤
“There’ll never be” is the song I believe you’re referencing
Her voice is the SWV sound. Not knocking the other two tho.

@moejazzie look at their New York Undercover episode. You might change your tune.
They always choose the best voice in a group. Producers & Label Heads know what make hits. Coco had that signature voice in SWV.
Not always. You ever heard of Kandi Koated Knights?
@@Director2024 But Kandi had a distinctive voice and tone similar to T-Boyz in TLC. Kandi carried the bottom harmony. It was millions of girls who could sound like The Scott sisters but nobody sounded like Kandi that's why their comeback EP without Kandi flopped and was terrible. But they can do anything wothout Tocha bc Tameka can take her parts and be just as good if not better without those sloppy and unnecessary runs
@@AngeBiampandou
I feel like Xscape could have just be 3 of them Tiny, Kandi and Tamika.

I don't think "It's All About U" would've sounded flat. Yes, Coko brought extra to it. But Taj carried that song great.
@@jalilmanson8980 💯
They also did the same thing on the track "Anything." There are several noticable difference on both the original and remix
That is one of my fav songs from them. I love how all of them were able to shine. Taj's lead vocals on that song were 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cokos mother is beautiful, look how youthful she looks
Coko was clearly the strongest vocalist and was the lead singer. I would like someone to explain why they think that she didn’t deserve this acknowledgment and COMPENSATION.
There is always a lead singer or a person who gets more solo vocals in a group or band, but that doesn't mean that they deserve to get paid more. All the members contribute to the success. When they're performing live, all the mics are on. No one person can carry a live show by themselves. SWV harmony is unmatched. Certain producers wanted Coko to do all the work, not the group.
I see why they wanted her voice in the background in addition to lead. The other two really can sing tho.
You have to understand They sing lower than Coko n Lelee can sing high she just dont you have to listen to New Begginings album because it showed alot of high n lows from the singing
Exactly. Como is louder than them naturally as well, but they both have beautiful unique voices.

Coco is a SUPREME VOCALISTS!!!!!!
Belting QUEEN!!!!!
Not up for discussion!!!!!
Karim Excellent point!! Nicole Scherzinger, Dawn Robinson, & TBoz are all prime examples of that too!!!

Wow coko mother looks just like her fr
I know for a fact RCA wasn't Finna waste time and money on somebody who didn't have talent....90's where the time of pure talent no auto tone... you either had it or u didn't
you don't think a record company would sign a group unless all 3 members could sing ?? like where have you been the last 20 years .
Yes back then it was all about singing live and upfront... now yes they may do it.... back then they perform live and acoustic then they do now...more artists have studio voices but sound like bullshit live....Toni Braxton and her sisters started off as a group, But laFace records only wanted Toni because her voice was low great and different from all the high note hitting female artists...with that being said if they only wanted coko trust and believe me she was the only one that would have gotten sign trust me
Great point.
Tracy727 right!! 🤣🤣🤣
The crazy thing is in weak if you listen to the background vocals you only hear mostly coko
Coko definitely not doing all that Harmony herself. THE BACKGROUND vocals on weak made it very special. They song it live all the time and sound jist like the record-3 voices!

rello omg are u serious??? smh kids these days dont know shit lol
You can distinctly hear the background harmony of ALL their voices on Weak.
Listen to "Rain" you can actually hear all three of them in the chorus
Coko’s voice is just so special. The other two ladies just can’t compare.
Coko's voice is so amazing!!! I like Leelee's voice too.
Real fans know it was actually "Sister With Voice"
Tony Turner-Wrong! They all sang well.
She did more work because they pushed her to do...the label, etc.
Agreed the label made Coko do all the xtra work so she deserved more money. Not necessarily a bigger royalty cut but def a bonus.
Bs! Lelee can hold her own vocally, taj is iffy live
Even today Coko is STILL singing her face off live while half the time Lelee doesn't even have the microphone within range of her mouth while lip-synching to back-up vocals on stage.

@@m.g.3842 because u know music!!! People saying they cant sing or Coko did all the singing. Just dumb! Lol
People with talent know that game. She was favored by the label but they didn't want to pay for her extra work.
This reminds me of what Ralph was going through in the New Edition Movie
There are some SWV songs that are basically solo Coko records. You hear her voice in both the lead and overwhelming the harmonies, while the other two either aren't there or are very, very faint. "Anything" and "Give It To Me" are the two biggest examples. You don't do that. If Coko is the lead singer, fine...but having her stack and multitrack harmonies was basically a covert way of saying that the other two members weren't necessary.
You are all very talented and Taj is especially nice as a person ... Coko is vocally very gifted and has a special voice ... I see Coko gets her outstanding beauty from her Mom
Come on Lelee, they chose Coko to do it because people prefer the sound of her voice.
Wow. Coco mom’s is so pretty. She looks like Diane Carroll
The saying goes '10% of something is more than 100% of nothing'. Taj and Lelee should've given Coko the rights to a bigger cut knowing she doing the most work. I'm sure they could've worked something out that was fair to everybody
I love da fact that coko wasn’t selfish and wanted da other girls to sing it’s sad she didn’t realize she had da best voice not only that if I was da manager I would put her as lead on every song as well
weak was also number one on the overall pop chart.
🙂

its so funny cos i developed an ear for the girls just by thrashing their albums.... i could break it down in a minute as far as who sang what...
I do believe that it takes more labor and work for the lead singer. Oftentimes the lead singer is not fairly paid.
SWV background vocal were as important as the lead...Just listen to the music...
l like them they're are good.

For what it was, SWV were good in the parts that they played. Now record companies don’t care to compensate someone for doing more work unless u have a separate deal for that. Otherwise, they just care that it sells.👍🏾
Friends shouldn’t work with each other period
At the end of the day if she had to put in more studio time than the other girls so they could lace her voice in over their backgrounds and do extra vocals no matter the reason, she should’ve been compensated more for it

Go listen to O'Holy night it bet it changes your mind, lelee sings first then taj and then coko...then let me know what you think
She is the lead
Say what u like but CoKo’s voice was allllll over the backgrounds on their first few albums. STILL & I MISSED US all of SWV can be heard. The background vocals still sound great but there is a difference and it’s less lush sounding.
Well if she wasnt being compensated i think she was being used i mean look what happened to tlc they made hits after hits and aint see no money
All three can sing. But coco can Blow!!!! Sorry ladies😘
NO DISRESPECT TO THE OTHER MEMBERS BUT ☕️ VOICE WAS VERY SPECIAL UNIQUE AND CONSISTENTLY EVOLVING
I agree if she did more she should get more
Let’s be honest....if you listen to most SWV records all you hear is Coko as the lead and background vocals.
Hey how can I watch all
I think Coco was like the Ralph Tresvant of the group. From the outside looking in I would assume she did get paid more bc she sang lead on majority of the songs. I wish her solo career took a greater path.
This is why it makes sense for the Michael Jacksons and Beyoncé s to break away and start building their solo career. Otherwise you will end up doing most of the group project with no extra compensation...and I like them all but still have to call ot what it is.
where can I watch full episode of Unsung SWV?
Monique McCowan
It was on at czcams.com/video/4JbQQFC-8VA/video.htmlm00s this morning. It's on cable so the network going be showing repeats all month long.
oh okay! thank you!☺@In HerAwesomeness
IM curious as well where u can find the entire episode. I haven't heard too much promo about it from unsung either.
all I get is this 1:14 vid when I click this link!😞
+Monique McCowan i saw unsung last night...Its not on CZcams yet..Its on thé tv one web site. this unsung was great....covered à lot of basés on the issues with swv.
Use your heart used all of their voice on lead
Right! I didn't know Girls Aloud had lead singer.
Episode please
lil tracy's mom
Wait, I can't hear the sound lol
Ah!!!!!SWV(Sistas Wit Voices) Is My Favorite Female R N B Group of All Time right next 2 En Vogue I Wished they Would've Joined Forces
I really don't see what the issue is....T-boz was the lead singer of her group & she did background vocals on all their records
Chilli and T-Boz were the duo lead singers in the group.
@@ms.bubs4fun506 Tboz is the lead singer though Chilli lead a few songs
bitch dont put Tboz in this conversation!
Nobody was checking for her vocals like that!!!
Completely INCOMPARABLE to the vocals of a Coko!!!
Forh
T Boz voice was most copied voice in the 90s. Coco had a regular church church voice. T-boz voice is legendary! You a bitch!
@@KevEonTHINKS The only b*tch u see is the one in the mirror
well, when you have a group they split the money three ways
only way you get more is if you actually a songwriter...did coco write any songs?
coko never wrote anything significant enough to justify a larger portion of the lion share, she wrote "a bit" of youre the one with taj and a few other writers and maybe a couple more...
Kay You
right. unfortunately that doesnt equal more money. the label and producers are responsible for the end product
sucks for coco...
Leave it alone.
so what exactly did the other 2 girls do? Are there vocals even on the songs?
Equity - equitable - the three of them could work out the terms of their group management to determine how proceeds are distributed - this is none of our business whatever they decide is fair - as far as who sings best, its relative, at the end of the day as are most opinions, the larger majority would say of course Coko has the superior vocal range
I am a fan of yours
Coko had the best voice, lelee (my fav) was the kelly rowland of swv, and taj rapped, but isnt as strong a singer imo
I agree...her raps were bubble gummish & they always have her mic low.
Their harmonies is undeniably super great... Especially the live ones, where we can all clearly see that those ladies were special, people just need to chill and not detract from other group members, even in movies, the supporting actors are just as important to the script as the main leading hero.
Lelee and Taj could sing back then when they were younger, but now their vocals are fading just because they were not doing lots of lead, which means that they didn't work on their vocals as Coko did
Very true
Yep and Lele has said this she said on the Verzus she was the one who taught Coko her range because Lele voice could do it but Lele lost it overtime she can't go as high she joked she gave all of her soprano to Coko
i dont care if coko was upset about doing more work for vocals.... those songs they recorded wouldnt sound the same if taj or lelee had dont some lead verses... the girls need to look past that. its music... its creativity... it was the 90s... it sounded cool... MUSIC LIKE THAT DOES NOT SOUND THE SAME NOW A DAYS
