Awesome video as always Julio. I'm sure that the center fuel tank where you did the inspection had been well ventilated and measured as always required, for it to be within the allowable limits for you and Michael to go inside. This video reminded me of when the fuel tanks had bladders and I had to go inside to lathe them into position with respiratory equipment. That was not a job for those who were claustrophobic!!! 😆😆😆
You are correct Carlos, it was well ventilated and actually we had just got back from fishing 🎣 . This work is not for your average Joe. Sacrifice for Paradise.

@@hyacinthbucket3803 That wasn’t CalFire we had S-2Ts that were completely refurbishished new wings, repaired wing boxes, & fuselage I was a structural repairman & aircraft mechanic I worked for 21 years we inspected our tanks, & X-Rayed center wings. We never lost an aircraft due to maintenance. That was the US Forest Service and a company out of Wyoming using older C-130s had a wing fold up on them in flight that was 2002, since then a lot has changed & I know a few aviation officers with them.
Didn't do much fuel tank work, a little sheet metal repair here and there, fuel quantity harness replace. But after 35 years (retired from major airline) my knees are not the same from crawling around in various part of the aircraft. Hats off to you fuel tank guys that did it so I wouldn't have to.

Almost nothing, a plane uses kerosine only for start and landing. On cruising speed it's a self running system without constant fuel burn because the engines are air-pressure turbines. Imagine a bird has liquid in his wings how unstable this would be for the entire structure and physics of flying. It's a fuel scam.

@@Bahasa_Put your tin foil hat back on and step out of your mum’s basement. You guys are the laughing stock of the aviation world. For those people who have a life and would like to know a few facts about the 767 fuel system, there are 3 main tanks. Left wing, centre wing, Right wing. From memory (it’s been 20ish years since I did tank entry) the wings hold 18,100 kgs of fuel give or take depending on the fuel density of the day. That huge centre wing tank could hold 40,000kgs of fuel. You may notice the ‘holes’ between bays that the guys passed through had a heap of screw holes. Those holes are for the bolts that hold the panels in place as they are required for the structural integrity of the wing structure. I’m unaware of the particular NDT inspection that they are doing there, but if I would guess that a 767 somewhere in the world developed a fuel leak from that area on the lower skin and as a result, every 767 requires mandatory inspections in this particular area via an FAA airworthiness directive as a result of a Boeing service bulletin. I don’t miss the smell or the bruises of being a tank rat anymore. It was a young persons game.

Was cool to see but it could have been a lot better. Tell us what you are doing exactly. What was you measuring with the probe? Leaks, thickness, something else? Also would be cool to understand more about what we were seeing inside the fuel tank. For example I assume there are pumps to balance the fuel load between tanks, to measure how much fuel is left, and other things like that. Would be cool to learn about that as well while you are in there. Just some suggestions. Keep up the great work.

The tank has been drained then force air vented and tested for fumes probably over a couple of days. Try doing the same thing in a "wet" tank (Empty but not vented so still residual fuel and full of fumes) so you have to wear a full coverage impervious suit and breathing apparatus along with safety lines and harnesses. makes it a hundred times harder but still vastly quicker which is what the airline is interested in, down time costs huge amounts of money. You need to be young slim and fit to do it. Certainly the last two.
I'm under the impression that this is a cargo aircraft so the downtime can be a bit longer or it's own by a charter airline that isn't being leased out much.

@@hyacinthbucket3803 The tank shown had been forced air ventilated until there was no fuel or fuel vapour detectable, otherwise the guys would have needed full coverage suits and breathing apparatus. When fuel tanks are open there is a risk of fire but there are a whole raft of regulations governing when, where, and how, tanks can be left open. Jet fuel is also considerably harder to catch fire than car or piston aircraft fuel as its ignition temperature is higher.

We were required to wear cotton coveralls with brass buttons when entering, have a entry permit at opening with a fire guard at entry point. What I see here is very unsafe.
Yes, wear rubber boots and use spark-proof tools etc. The old rubber tank-suits we had to wear inside the bag-tanks were awful, especially in summertime when it was hot and 🥵 I expect the vapour concentration is carefully checked prior to entry and personal gas monitors are used whilst inside the tanks.

Fascinating, but at the exact same time I could not stop myself from thinking that those huge fuel tanks are what delivered the devastating infernos that would melt the steel of the WTC towers on 9/11 that caused both towers to pancake collapse. Just the enormous size of the jet as you guys were walking up to the 767 made me think of how this enormous jet penetrated the WTC towers at nearly 600 MPH. Anyway, back to the positive and us all continuing to move ahead in life. Nice job fellas! Thanks for keeping our airplane fleets safe for us all.
@@viperfanacr Yes it can and it did. When it burns and is highly oxygenated--Jet-A can burn up to 2200 deg. F. When all 20,000 gallons of jet fuel from both 767s were released from the disintegrating aircraft, the fuel was traveling at nearly 600 MPH with the speed of the planes--which sprayed and atomized throughout WTC1 and WTC2 with those huge gapping holes in each building channeliing the steady 15 MPH northwestern prevailing winds right through each tower--that provided a steady flow of fresh oxygen supply until the steal trusses that held up each floor started to melt from the 2000 degree F. flames and failed--causing a domino effect classic pancake collapse of both towers. Basic physics--not science denial. What's up with you?
@@viperfanacr It doesn't to malt steel beams, as any blacksmith will tell you. Once steel or iron is red hot (700C) it is soft like toffee! Toffee wouldn't hold up the WTC either.
@@karhukiviThis guy is correct, metal will not melt at that temp. But it will become soft and weak causing the collapse to happen. I’ve been Heat treating metals since 1996 and some material like high speed steels require a soak temp of 2250F for a short period of time and rapid cool. Even at this temperature the material will not melt.

I usually go in when the tanks are full so as to get the proper pressure manifold temp/pressure readings. The sending units are calibrated within micro nanometer tolerances so the oscillating reverse valve index sheaths have to be reground for proper interval siphoning to the pump lines. The reverse tanks flow opposite so I have to swim through to the other end to check those as well. The tanks aren’t totally full when I’m swimming in there so it’s essentially a snorkel with a mask.

In the 70's I worked on Canadair CL44's ex Flying Tigers. I can remember climbing into Centre fuel tank bay and then releasing bottom of wing tank bags and squeezing under bag so as not to disturb the lacing which held the bag to the roof of the tank bay, to get to the outer bag, which was always the one that was leaking. That was scary, no breathing apparatus. no real safety gear all we got was a milk allowance. You had to keep your cool and not panic. I have never done pot holing, but I imagine that would be the closest I have ever been to doing that. I can still smell the Avtur.

That is very cool!!! Gives you a perspective of how much fuel one of those birds use!

When I hear people giving career advice saying "you can be anything you want", especially to young people, I shake my head!

Might be a dumb question, but isn’t there a danger of an air fuel fire to break out in that confined space?
@@hyacinthbucket3803 The tank shown had been forced air ventilated until there was no fuel or fuel vapour detectable, otherwise the guys would have needed full coverage suits and breathing apparatus.
When fuel tanks are open there is a risk of fire but there are a whole raft of regulations governing when, where, and how, tanks can be left open. Jet fuel is also considerably harder to catch fire than car or piston aircraft fuel as its ignition temperature is higher.
I am really claustrophobic and feel suffocated on seeing tight spaces. So I'll skip this one.

It's all lies
We were required to wear cotton coveralls with brass buttons when entering, have a entry permit at opening with a fire guard at entry point. What I see here is very unsafe.
Now they wear CZcams TikTok shirts as uniforms.
Yes, wear rubber boots and use spark-proof tools etc. The old rubber tank-suits we had to wear inside the bag-tanks were awful, especially in summertime when it was hot and 🥵
I expect the vapour concentration is carefully checked prior to entry and personal gas monitors are used whilst inside the tanks.

Jet fuel can't melt steel beams
Still didn't just pancake straight down without some other "assistance" What's up with YOU? @@youchris67
I felt claustrophobic just by watching this.
Question prior to MRI, “Do you suffer from claustrophobia?”
Answer then, “Not sure.” After this, “Beyond a doubt.”

Be pockets of residual fuel. Meters called multi rays are used to measure LEL, VOC and oxygen levels. Before entering the tanks they are defuled and later “dripped” from the sump drain( same area where fuel samples and taken from) Tanks are purged with supply and exhaust air, there’s also a process of vacuum ing fuel with a special vacuums. workers enter with fuel face breathing apparatus and literally vacuum the fuel. It can be dangerous, especially being a confined space.
