I agree im a novice at guns but common sense tells me guys and gals are all different ages weights frames and our hands are all different sizes. My best friend says the same thing, shoot with what is most comfortable to your entire body.
CAROLINA PATRIOT Even that might mot technically be the case. The best is probably the smallest round you can get reliable hollow point expansion from, as no handgun round can defeat the elasticity of human flesh. All you’re doing is poking holes. So penetration and shot placement are pretty much all that matter irl. That’s why the difference between the number rounds fired in successful instances of self-defense tend to be very similar, regardless of caliber. Difference is, you *will* be able to shoot a smaller caliber better. So I would say the best handgun caliber is the smallest you can get good hp expansion and penetration from. That means .32 ACP, .327 magnum, and the like.
You won't stop a decided attacker just by noise. Several footage supporting this. You better shot as many rounds, fast and precisly, or you'll be dead. That's why 9mm is the king.
@@steveh.3370 Any of the rounds in this video will do that to you. The difference between a typical 9mm and a .357 in terms of noise is fewer than 5 decibels and both are way above the db threshold regarding hearing damage.

Darcey Spemcer Ahhh you've had a similar experience as well... You are absolutely correct when you stated "It was an experience to learn from". Also I'd have to agree with you, when you said "You're alive for a reason". Recoil seems to be a subject that garners a TON of opinions. But like you mentioned it's something that a person can get used to.
Hi Damnan', I hope you recover quickly. I wasn't going to comment on the video, but since you're new to the world of guns, some thoughts that you may or may not find helpful. First, most gun people are "foamers", and everyone has an opinion that in their opinion is right. Next, I had a friend that was a patrol deputy who fired 36 rounds (two clips) of 9mm before the drugged-up cop-killer finally dropped. He dumped the 9 and went to a .45. I like the .40 S&W, so great choice. The power to mass ratio stats are excellent. I've had zero trouble maintaining tight groups in rapid/ combat stress firing. The bottom line is though, regardless of weapon or most calibers, as long as the gun fires, and you hit your target when under severe stress, you should be able to survive. I understand a .44 mag is good for grizzly. Finally, as you search youtube videos, and other sources, look for the ones who are super qualified, ex-cops, Special Operations, and so forth. "Hickock45" knows quite a bit, "Vickers Tactical" is US Army SF, "Funker Tactical/ Instructor Zero" is good to list some names. Take some NRA courses. As a former Army Medic with 2 combat tours, and as an ex-cop, that's my unsolicited advice, but ~Qualified~ Opinion. Welcome to the Second Amendment!
Dude, the quirky captions over the serious presentation is fantastic in your videos. Finding gun videos that are educational without being boring as hell is a chore, and the balance in yours is great. Keep up the good work!
The 357 sig is a great round. I have 3 Glocks in that caliber (Models 33, 31, and 24 6 in barrel). The ballistics for the Speer Gold Dot are outstanding (506 ft lbs 1350 fps) with great penetration and expansion. Using a DPM recoil reduction system, it is pleasant to shoot, even in the baby Glock 33. Ammo is easily obtained on the net or at gun shows. It is an accurate, flat shooting gun. Finally, there is no P needed, although Buffalo Bore has a potent round in 125 grain (564 ft lbs 1425 fps).
You forgot .45 Long Colt. It's actually one of my favorites. You can get low power "cowboy loads" all the way up to buffalo bore +p+. It's a badass round!!
I've been looking at Ruger Redhawk double actions, and I seen the Colt45/.45acp combo revolver, do you think that's a great deal? Yeah it's like 1200 bucks, but having the power and versatility of Colt45 and being able to load 45acp with moonclips (making it affordable to shoot for fun) just seems to make it an amazing deal to me. What do you think?
I never fired a .357 Sig before, but it does make sense that it would feed reliably since you have a smaller bullet going into an initially larger chamber than the actual bullet.
I always liked the 40/357sig conversion weapons . but , like everyone I too got old-er and found I too needed to lighten things up without putting my life in danger but being able to enjoy myself too . What I ended up with is a conversion set of the 1911/2011 in 9mm/22tcm and Love it .
I was lucky enough to shoot a .44 mag at an outdoor range (illegal to do in Canada). Some random guy drinking beers handed it to me and said "Have fun". Sadly this is the only time I have shot a handgun, yes I shoot rifles/shotguns often but it's not the same. Stupid Canadian laws make handguns more of a hassle to own then it's worth.
Plasticman Either I vote conservative, which is expanding our jails and making marijuana more illegal (so stupid) or vote NDP who will make us have less firearms rights but legalize it... I just want to vote for the freedom party.
EXACTLY. and fucking Liberal party is pretty much same as NDP. whats the point of democracy then. but one thing's for sure, i need to become an NFA member.
Plasticman Liberals steal our money for themselves, for me it's between NDP (which I will probably vote for... sadly) or the right winged devils lol. ALso agreed with the NFA membership, gonna get myself one as well.
I love your humor. Excellent video, full of both information and entertaining content. You clearly care about your craft enough to put that much effort into editing and polish. Great work, I'll be watching more videos from you soon.
Ive always liked .32acp. I think it has alot of potential for people with small hands or people who are "recoil shy". If Glock made a .32, and if the cost of ammo came down to the equivalent of 9mm, I think a 12-18 round .32 in a small frame automatic would make a great choice for some people. I think it should be more popular than it is.
You are a hoot dude. You remind me of me LOL. I've watched a number of your videos, and I either: watch once for the video/audio and a 2nd time for the subtitles?? (silly comments) or just watch once and rewind a boat load. Anyhow, love your take on the self defense world and love your subtitle humor. Carry on!!!
The desert eagle in .44 magnum is my favorite .44 magnum, 9mm is my ultimate favorite especially using hornady critical duty 135+p cause of barrier penetration. I agree with .357sig all the way but availability is major problem regardless of budget. I also like 10mm for major power.
If I had to pick one, I'd go .357 Magnum. A revolver in .357 can fire mouse fart .38 S&W for fun, .38Spl for practice and hot .357 Mag for "critcal work" Also it's a fun lever action carbine round (modrern Henry rifles,Etc...)
Nice overview of most choices and a good starting video for those researching a handgun choice. Myself I went with the 9x19mm because it is the most common handgun ammo in the world. Most countries use it for their military and police.
For me the most versatile round is .357 magnum especially if you reload, you can load them mild to wild, shoot them in a hand gun or in a rifle they are very potent. 9mm is the best all around caliber for semi -auto's very cheap to plink with and +P ammo can be as powerful as a .357 sig.
Here's a practical question: One argument I hear for certain calibers (like .357 Magnum) is that you can load a powerful, capable round for self defense while shooting a cheaper cartridge at the range, is that adequate? If you train with a cheaper cartridge while carrying a more powerful/expensive cartridge, does that practice carry over? Or do you need to "train like you fight and fight like you train"?
I had that very same concern. So one day I brought to the range a box of .357 in addition to the .38 I practiced with. I fired a cylinder of .38, then .357, then .38, then .357, carefully noticing how the gun felt in my hand, and how it shot. I concluded the difference wasn't big enough to worry about in a self-defense situation...training with .38 is fine. I then fired the remaining 40 rounds of .357 I had. I did notice that my hands were sore the next day from the abuse of firing 50 .357 shots from my little 2" snubnose. In the end, I decided that practicing with .357 is not only expensive, but unnecessary and unnecessarily hard on your hands. That's my take, anyway.
Nice review sir..I'm all for the ol' reliable .38 Special six shot revolver. If you need more than 6 rounds to defend yourself... ..you are in the wrong part of town. That's my story & I'm stickin' to it.
In the Philippines the army was having problems stopping the Hucks. A 9 mm did not stop a hyped up huck charging with a machete in time. The army changed over to the 45 which resolved the problem.
Thanks for the great analysis. Been really happy with my H&K P2000sk .40. For a 3.25 inch barrel, it shoots the .40 pretty well and I have the option of someday purchasing the .357 Sig conversion kit. It all depends on how you research the right ammo for a given pistol as well. For example, you are better off, and more affective, shooting a 180 to 200 grain .40 defense ammo (Federal HST and Gold Dot) in the shorter barrels for good stopping power and velocity vs. a 165 grain. Additionally, because of the heavier weight in the shorter barrel, you can feel the difference in slightly less recoil. I'd love for Yankee to post his takes on which defense ammo is best in his opinion in which pistols, such as what is better to shoot in a .40 with 4 to 4.5 inch barrel vs. a 3.2 to 3.5 inch barrel etc. I agree with Yankee big time; really wish manufacturers would stress the .357 Sig round more and make them more available at a .40 price. He was not kidding that it's an expensive round. Even 5 years ago, I used to notice that a box of 50 plinking ammo was no less then $25 and up to about $35 per box, whereas a box of 50 for 9mm was around $11, .40 was as low as $14 and .45 was around $18. If you live in CA like me, I'd go .40 to .45 for my home defense/carry pistols because we are not allowed over 10 rounds per mag. So if you practice enough, you can become efficient and you certainly want every round to count. But of course, everyone should have a 9mm or 2 in their collection.
.357 SIG is the most handgun cartridge I've ever tested. And velocities are faster than most .357 magnums. Especially since they've lowered the operating pressure on the magnum
10mm hands down. Only problem with 10mm, provided you can handle the recoil, is the lack of guns chambered in it. A good 10mm gives you twice the muzzle energy as a .45ACP. Magnum power in an automatic is a beautiful thing.
QBCoach12 10mm auto best round ever!! not expensive to shoot $.50 a round is hardly breaking the bank, just have to shop them or reload. You are absolutely correct a manageable hand cannon!!
QBCoach12 What I'm waiting for is a surge in the popularity of 10mm. Yeah, the Glock 20 is badass, but I would LOVE to see HK come out with their Mk23 in 10mm, or a Springfield XD, S&W M&P, FN, or Sig, all of which I like better than Glock.
Evan Friend It's always nice to see another fan of the 10mm. I own a Delta Elite and a G20, but I love the H&K design. Like you, I would love to see H&K make a USP10.
QBCoach12 Yeah, I really like the Delta, and the way it shoots, it's very accurate. In fact, it was always my favorite gun for bowling pin matches. However, the Delta is built on a 1911 frame, and that was designed to handle 45 ACP pressures, NOT 10mm. As such, shooting full-power loads in a Delta could lead to a cracked frame. So, I shoot "FBI 10" (180's at 800FPS) in my Delta, and save the Elmer Keith Magnum Memorial Loads (180's at 1300FPS) for the G20
***** That's really the only problem with 10mm. So few guns, and not all can even handle the full power loads. Other companies besides Glock really need to start designing some guns around the 10mm cartidge, it really is a pity that such a great round isn't being used to its full potential.
If you like the 357 Magnum so much, I would think the 10MM would be your favorite semi-auto round. It has as much power as the 357 Magnum (not talking about FBI loads) and like in my Glock 20C, it can hold an amazing 15+1. Now of course price and availability are issues, but I have really become a 10MM supporter. I think underwood makes some incredible ammo in 10MM. Thanks!
But it's expensive, and the recoil is pretty stiff. The recoil is what brought about the .40 S&W remember. I think he's right with the .357 sig, it's to the 9mm what the 10 mm is to the 40. Same bullet diameter with better performance, and like he said, less recoil etc that hold the 40 caliber rounds back but it hasn't been widely enough adopted to make sense... That being said, the 10 is a great round, tons of power, pushing 357 numbers out of an auto, but availability, price, guns manufactured for it, recoil etc, all drawbacks.
I reload the Sig 357 that you mentioned and I am very happy with it what I like about it is I can custom load them for target or self-defense. it is true that very rare maybe that's why I do my own reloads period I have found out that I have never have had a jam on my 357 Sig. love it very much.
Man you not joking about the .357 Sig and the .40 two very good rounds but Mann! those things are expensive.. I love them, they perform well ,but it's breaking me lol.
Mate, thanks for the info, I found the presentation to be quite enjoyable and my wife even laughed at the on screen comments. In 50 years of being involved with firearms, I've only ever shot 357mag and browning 9mm in sidearms and long arms - 75cal down to 17cal (current rifles 22/250 and Sharps 45/120) with only a few exceptions, muzzleloaders, full auto, semi auto, repeaters and single shot, oh and many different shotguns. Needless to say I found your sway on the various handgun rounds very interesting. Our laws here in Oz aren't as liberal as yours. Thanks for posting mate, all the best from Downunder :) .
Call me a puss but I love 9mm. It's not super weak yeah it's not a 1 hit stopper but you get good capacity easy follow up shots and lightweight carry guns. My EDC is a M&P 9 compact. 9mm is a good round if you pick the right ammo. My edc load is 147 grain +P federal HST.
dont listen to the haters, 9mm is a great round. I shoot that and 45acp. The sig round in the video prob did not catch on because its expensive AND hard to reload. No one wants to reload a pistol round with a neck. Its just not worth it
Don't forget about the .44 special. It's a devastating round with a 180 grain hollow point. Very little recoil with lots of power. I really enjoyed your video! it was entertaining and informative. keep up the good vids!
i have to mention to you…i recently received a .40 Bersa with 2 13 rd magazine. i never had one before…i have to admit…i love it…its one of my favs now…and my point is that during the ammo crutch we are going through…the .40 S&W is the one round that i have NEVER had a problem finding…at about $19 to $25 for a 50rd box is not that bad…and the price is even better at gun shows...
The 357 Sig has been my favorite round for years, superior to most others. When I tell people its my favorite round they look at me with a blank expression and usually say nothing. You are the first Ive heard who agrees. I guess so does the Michigan State Police, the Secret Service and many others.......
A year has gone by and I still love the .357 SIG and shoot it much more than I used to. My Glock 32 is fairly accurate and I have a load that averages 1470 ft/sec. That is truly .357 mag performance.
You're the first youtuber I've seen to ever make an actually entertaining and amusing video about this topic. I love your captions they really keep the topic lighthearted...
+the yamahammer good weight for target shooting with the full length underlug and the frame size. recoil is absorbed well, and the the 686+ is gonna give you 7 rounds. and it's just badass
+the yamahammer in a couple days I'm gonna go pick up the S&W model 66. it's a 6 shot .357 with a four and a quarter inch barrel. looks great. you should consider it
The 500 S&W is a great gun for home defense in a situation when you have a robber hiding behind the refrigerator... in your neighbor's house.
A Mosin's good too if your friend who lives three counties away is in trouble.
Now that right there is funny, mattrx2i!
Yes it is good self defense for long distance and against helicopters or low flying craft....Hmmm should get one....How much do they cost?

$1700 for the gun, and $2-$3.75 per round. About the same as Desert Eagle .500 AE.

I've carried firearms chambered in .40S&W for years. I found .40S&W easy to find even during the Great Ammo Shortage of 2012-2013.
Future reference: It's looking like the last to dry up during the Great Great Ammo Shortage of 2020-2XXX.
I dislike 40 but this is one reason I think people should own a 10mm
Dude, the quirky captions over the serious presentation is fantastic in your videos. Finding gun videos that are educational without being boring as hell is a chore, and the balance in yours is great. Keep up the good work!
Like if I'm camping and I leave my twinkies out and Rosie O'Donnell attacks me
😂
🤣🤣🤣
I think maybe my M-1 would be in order for that!
I fucking lost it with the Rosie O'Donnell quote hahahaha!!!
You need to do a new one of these with the new calibers you acquired (41 magnum, 327 magnum etc. )
You had me at Twinkies and Rosio Donald attacking. New subscriber here 😂😂😂
You forgot .45 Long Colt.
Amen!
Smith & Wesson M29 4" conceals great with IWB holster and a loose shirt
Just recently discovered your youtube channel and I frikkin love it! Informative and funny at the same time. Definitely subscribing! Thanks!
My carry is a 45 ACP. My nightstand gun is a double stacked 40 S&W. Love them both.
Personally I carry a glock 20 gen 3 10mm and have no problems finding ammo or hitting targets and my stopping power exceeds my 45acp
You've displeased the cult if 10mm
If your going to be in a cult....you could do worse...
This video had me laughing so hard I was on the verge of crying
I was lucky enough to shoot a .44 mag at an outdoor range (illegal to do in Canada). Some random guy drinking beers handed it to me and said "Have fun". Sadly this is the only time I have shot a handgun, yes I shoot rifles/shotguns often but it's not the same. Stupid Canadian laws make handguns more of a hassle to own then it's worth.
and we dont even have any pro gun people to vote for
Plasticman Either I vote conservative, which is expanding our jails and making marijuana more illegal (so stupid) or vote NDP who will make us have less firearms rights but legalize it...
Dave W Not in an outdoor rifle range it's not legal.
I love your humor.
Excellent video, full of both information and entertaining content.
You clearly care about your craft enough to put that much effort into editing and polish. Great work, I'll be watching more videos from you soon.
This video was not only really instructive but also really really funny, thanks.
if i forgot my twinkies and rosie odonnell attacked lol....good stuff man! like the video!
Carry on!!!
I totally agree with you. 357 mag in revolver, 357 Sig in semi.
Perfect choice, great vid.
The desert eagle in .44 magnum is my favorite .44 magnum, 9mm is my ultimate favorite especially using hornady critical duty 135+p cause of barrier penetration. I agree with .357sig all the way but availability is major problem regardless of budget. I also like 10mm for major power.
I dident hear anything you said because I was laughing at the sub-titles
I think .357mag is the best overall round period.
TheYankeeMarshal Do you know if a 45 acp +p vs the .357 recoil wise is the .357 more snappy.
+Guns & Gears Can't you shoot at .38spl out of a .357 mag? That would basically eliminate the range drawback.
That's cause you have a bias for revolvers, but that's not really a big deal.
pbanthonyv yes you can and you can also get 38 special +p
Should practice most with your carry weapon most is what I hear
This and your other videos are way too funny yet, STILL informative! ⚡💪🏾
I have recently found your videos and came across this one oh, I know it's older but it's funnier than hell.
Read part of a Twilight book once... now I shoot a 10mm to compensate.
You probably realize now but it would have been great if there was a number written on the table by each bullet.
displayfireworks1 I was thinking the same thing
a fridge would stop it
On my screen the number see there
Why, you can easily tell the calibers just by looking at each round.
Fireworks have taken a backseat to the gun game. Still love your videos
Thank you for the sense of humor during this video.
I love your videos, very informative, thought provoking, and humorous.
40MM Grenade--Why go with second best?
Paris Gun shell 216 mm -- why go with anything else?
I NEVER saw such a bunch of SICK pupies, but I crack up reading them,to funny
You left out the 45 colt with hard cast rounds
Such a fun video to watch. I loved the captions and the information. 45 and 40 still my favorites though even if a 9 mm may be in my budget soon.
Great review brother, thank you!
Nice review sir..I'm all for the ol' reliable .38 Special six shot revolver. If you need more than 6 rounds to defend yourself...
..you are in the wrong part of town. That's my story & I'm stickin' to it.
I have a 5 round .38 special revolver...
I AGREE WHOLE HEARTEDLY
If 6 rounds of 38 isn't enough you need a long gun.
Even wadcutters running less than 800 fps are great penetrators.
The best caliber is the one that saves your life.
FACTS!!!!!
In the Philippines the army was having problems stopping the Hucks. A 9 mm did not stop a hyped up huck charging with a machete in time. The army changed over to the 45 which resolved the problem.
The US was using the .38 Long Colt in the Philippines when they changed over to the .45 Auto, not 9mm.
I have to say that I enjoy your videos immensely! The captions are superb! Thank you!
10mm was once loaded so hot they were stepping into 41 remington magnum
That’s what I have. Glock 20... I love it
40 S&W all day!
Thanks! That was a very cool and informative video, vet it was concise and to the point. No pun intended, LOL.
For Rosie odonnel you may want to go with a 50. Cal BMG buddy!
+dirtyjew1974 You need a MOAB for that my friend. :)
+Dave Smith
do you want people to threaten to shoot and kill your mother, wife, sister or daughter? then why threaten to murder Rosie
+dirtyjew1974
murdering women is weak and against the US constitution, patriot
That's no woman though though
Cool down corn holio. The mans just kidding but it would be nice to shut that whiny trap of hers up for good.
Best video on CZcams, thanks for the great info and entertainment!
Solid video, thanks. And the goddamn funniest comment was the caliber reqd to drop Rosie; I couldn't stop laughing because it took me by surprise.
The .45 ACP has as much stopping power if not more than the .357 magnum and like the .357, it has a significant stockpile.
You must not be a fan of ballistics Renee.
You should see if you can find a Raven . The original 10mm . SWEET GUN .
Edward Mannah
Fuck raven! get a Coonan 357 magnum 1911. Barely any felt recoil compared to a revolver.
Hello! Is anybody here watching this old video?
9mm and 357 mag... really groundbreaking stuff here.
Great little vid, very informative and dense. 5:39 I am guilty as hell LMAO!!
The Tokarev round is a very good one that you neglected to mention
Stephen Keeler
Aye, 7.62x25 is nice.
I agree - the Tokarev is one hell of a vicious round. Very accurate and flat shooting with tremendous range and truly frightening penetration power.
Yankee, what's your favorite 9mm ammo for self defense ?
I mean, brand, grain.
Right now I have my gun loaded with USM4.
That is what I am using.
I reload the Sig 357 that you mentioned and I am very happy with it what I like about it is I can custom load them for target or self-defense. it is true that very rare maybe that's why I do my own reloads period I have found out that I have never have had a jam on my 357 Sig. love it very much.
this is the first video of yours I have seen. and I have to say, I laughed my ass off at your captions.
Man you not joking about the .357 Sig and the .40 two very good rounds but Mann! those things are expensive.. I love them, they perform well ,but it's breaking me lol.
40 is just as cheap as 9mm. www.bluelinetacticalgear.com/product.winchester-ammo-usa40w-usa-centerfire-40-sw-165-gr-fmj-200-box3-case?source=product
Target ammo yeah... But JHP are more expensive
James grant
Well yeah, but its not like you have to buy a defense ammo more than a few times.
I think you have the placing of that .45 ACP and 10mm mixed up, you need to switch those two around.
My thoughts too.
Wow you don't shoot very much, if it isn't obvious which caliber is which, you guys should go back and pickup your redryder's.
I like what a cop said one time during a caliber debate. The officer said, "They all kill."
45acp /Cor-Bon DPX 😎
iam stay with my .357 magnum...
Great video. Very informative, and I love your `tongue in cheek` comments with text !
Love your sense of humour, you crack me up.
Puss
+TheYankeeMarshal Now I have to go to my safe place 😭
10mm guy here but shoot often and be safe. the most important thing is to share the love of shooting.. fuck billary!
With good defensive ammo like Hornady Critical Defense, the 9mm is a one shot stop caliber
dont listen to the haters, 9mm is a great round. I shoot that and 45acp. The sig round in the video prob did not catch on because its expensive AND hard to reload. No one wants to reload a pistol round with a neck. Its just not worth it
colt delta eliet 10 mm the 1911 chambered in 10mm its like god said hm lets make the best handgun and make it better
Ironic since JBs improvement to the 1911 was to make it a 9mm.
How about the .45 long colt? 😊
I'd agree.
But only if you dropped the LONG.
.45 Colt
'Nuff said ...
i"M a .45 man....just saying
My carry is a S&W M&P .40 and the fun one is Ruger Alaskan in .44 Mag. Nice video too.
Thanks for this info, please ignore the negative reviews. I appreciate your insight.
The 357 Sig has been my favorite round for years, superior to most others. When I tell people its my favorite round they look at me with a blank expression and usually say nothing. You are the first Ive heard who agrees. I guess so does the Michigan State Police, the Secret Service and many others.......
Ah fuck it. You have a new subscriber.
I really like the 357 Magnums. I have a few revolvers for it and a nice Rossi lever action carbine rifle that will drop white tails.
A year has gone by and I still love the .357 SIG and shoot it much more than I used to. My Glock 32 is fairly accurate and I have a load that averages 1470 ft/sec. That is truly .357 mag performance.
Is thatnyour own personal load or is it from a manufacturer and if so which one?
@@patrickferryman6579 It's my own
You're the first youtuber I've seen to ever make an actually entertaining and amusing video about this topic. I love your captions they really keep the topic lighthearted...
Yankee I'm going to buy a full size .357, should I get the 686 ssr or 627 pro series? I'm just going to target shoot.
686+
+TheYankeeMarshal thanks for that fast answer any particular reason why?
+the yamahammer good weight for target shooting with the full length underlug and the frame size. recoil is absorbed well, and the the 686+ is gonna give you 7 rounds. and it's just badass
+the yamahammer in a couple days I'm gonna go pick up the S&W model 66. it's a 6 shot .357 with a four and a quarter inch barrel. looks great. you should consider it
+Austen Greco thanks for making the suggestions.
.357 mag and 9x18 are my two favorites. I use .357 mag for camping and winter EDC and 9x18 for general EDC in spring-fall.
I have a sig sauer P320 .. its the full size one and chambered in .357 sig ... I love the .357 Sig round. its my favorite for sure
