My lads 8 and im already training him to be independent so when hes 10/11 i can just go to work at 7am or whatever and wake him up to make sure he gets ready for school and walk to bus stop with his own house key etc
“I am not out of touch as I am dealing with kids all the time. “ :) Working 8 hours a day with children is a significantly different thing than to be a parent who is responsible day and night 24 hours every single day for the children, when there is no evening off no weekend off and no sick live, not to mention that in the meantime there is plenty of other responsibilities what has to be fulfilled as well.
When I was young, both parents always had to work, so kids would be alone since they were maybe 8 for a few hours. It was normal to come home from school alone and be alone for a few hours.
