    I got this for Christmas one year and loved it. If I remember correctly the commercial showed the boy driving it while looking at a highway full of traffic on his tv. That sold me! But I never did figure out how to watch the traffic on tv. Of course now we’re stuck in traffic and don’t need a video! Great memories. Thank you.

    That's a brilliant toy. Wouldn't take much to mod the toy with a gas pedal, using a simple bike brake cable, and dead gaming pedal. connect the brake line to the speedometer shaft, and there. You've got an even more realistic toy. Thanks for sharing this. :)

      Sounds like a great Christmas. As I said in the video, mine just showed up one day in a box. You can imagine how amazing it was just to get this, not know anything about it--figuring out what the knobs do, and just enjoying something out of the blue like that. Those Deluxe Reading engineers really knew how to capture kids' imaginations. Their toys were like no others.

    I got this exact Deluxe Reading Playmobile Dashboard for Christmas in 1962. I was 6 years old. I've been looking for several years to find another one in good condition at a reasonable price. Just to put in a display case. This is very cool toy from so long ago.

    This company missed out on a great opportunity. They should have included in each one, a custom "vehicle registration" that the 'owner' could use to pass the vehicle on to someone else!

    I remember I was with my mom at the AandP store back in the 60s. I spied a Jimmy jet on the shelf and wanted it. The thing was 18 bucks. Mom said to much. But in 1963 18 dollars would buy a lot of groceries.

    • @ToyKingWonder
      @ToyKingWonder  Před 2 lety

      I don't know if Inflation Calculator is really appropriate along all lines of consumer goods, but according to that site, that would be $164.00. But let's look at it another way. The medium income for all families was $6200 in 1963. That would be .29% of someone's income. Today's national income average is around $72k I believe. At $164, that would be .23% of income. So it is pretty close. Either way, that is a lot of money for a dashboard toy. However, these were USA made, they were pretty good quality, and they were likely the big gift for someone's Christmas. Deluxe Reading also had a layaway plan.
      They toy industry did create innovation and manufacturing improvements during the next decade, obviously. I remember my GIJoe Mobile Support Vehicle outfit--much more complicated than the Playmobile, was $15 in 1972, 9 years later! So yes, $18 in 1963 was a lot of money.

    6:15 check the MSRP $9.99. That's closer to $120 in 2023. And my Mom and Dad swung that for me on my Dad's Graduate student stipend in 1961 with the mortgage and the taxes and the payments on the second-hand Studebaker.

    • @ToyKingWonder
      @ToyKingWonder  Před rokem +1

      Yes, they were manufactured to a price point. As a little kid however, one didn't notice. There were cost cutting measures for sure, as in the fact that it didn't have a finished back, just cardboard!! Other items I noticed from Deluxe Reading/Topper, seemed to be a little higher quality. My uncle sent me this after my cousin outgrew it, just out of the blue, I was so excited to get it. Just a year earlier, I got the Jimmy Jet for Christmas. It wasn't until I was an adult collector and wanted these back that I realized they were both made by the same company.
