What I loved about the soundtrack is some of the original tracks felt like they were inspired from other belt scrolling brawlers. Case in point, the Level 6 sound "Glad I Am" reminds me a lot of a mashup of two songs from the 1993 Konami brawler Violent Storm: Stage 1's "Who'll Be The Hero?" and Stage 5's "We Are Free." All it needed was the sax solo from the latter.

Even the IGN review would be valid if it was presented as simply being from the perspective of someone who dislikes the genre rather than objective fact and was offset by a couple lines by reviewers who do enjoy the genre, all presented as subjective views that are equally valid.

This game is the best game in the series that I've played. The comparison to Streets of Rage 4 is apt. This game is very similar in how it seems very nostalgic on the surface but the mechanics have surprising depth that reward skilled play. Using the gleam mechanic and rolling and dodging through the stages is extremely satisfying.
I love that it doesn't just draw from Double Dragon but also from '80s culture broadly, I get Big Trouble in Little China vibes from the whole experience.
And my God the music! Jake Kaufman is a wonderful composer, and when I first heard Mango Tango I stopped playing and just listened to how dead on of an '80s track it was. It's still a track I listen to regularly - it is just so incredibly well done.
I know that this game is on Steam but I really think it needs to be rereleased on PS4/Xbox One and playable on new consoles through backwards compatibility. It makes no sense that they would re-release it on Switch and nothing else.

Well their Kickstarter for Shovel Knight was only a few months after Neon was released & that was well received.
Plus don't think anyone is gonna say pixel art makes it look like a flash game, unless they don't even know what a flash game is & just think that flash game = retro or something.

Neon's music was about the only thing I really liked.. I didn't at all care about the designs, remined me too much of a Saturday morning cartoon.. Would love to see s Double Dragon, having Billy slightly modeled (though not as tall and big) after Kenshiro, of Hokuto no Ken, since Double Dragon had also taken some inspiration from that. Jimmy (again not as big and tall), would slightly be modeled after Falco, also of Hokuto no ken. Music would be done by Kazunaka Yamane, because Double Dragon II, and Super Double Dragon's music is amazing!

If you come into this with a low expectation of, and presumptions about, the typical IGN reader then 3.5/10 is probably reasonable for such a group. For lack of a better term to describe this crowd, how many "dudebros" do you think would enjoy DD Neon? Fortunately in this case, Neon was popular enough amongst more dedicated game fans to enjoy the success it deserves. So lastly I ask no one in particular, "90`s grunge nostalgia version WHEN?!"

Thanks, great video. I had the same issue as IGN when I first played it on Xbox 360. However on Switch I have played through it several times. I think the problem is that the tapes/stances are not explained well and not turned on my default, meaning you get absolutely smashed when starting off. I’m not a big fan of WayForward and Arc System Works’ takes on the Technōs Japan games:
    • The look of their games never targets older audiences.
    • Double Dragon Mobile is more faithful than Double Dragon NEON.
    • Double Dragon 4 looks like a glorified fan-game hack of the NES/Famicom classic sequel.
    • River City Girls is River City Ransom that has been given the Ghostbusters treatment, with Kunio and Riki looking like two Gaysian-Hipsters.
The companies that did both Double Dragon and Kunio-kun better justice is SNK and Atlus. Those two should teamed up and owned the rights to Technōs Japan’s games.

I missed this one back in the day, but will certainly have to go back and play it.
It's clear the IGN reviewer doesn't understand the game let alone the genre, but are right that games used to be quarter munchers. The developers weren't intending to reinvent the wheel and mainly targeted towards those of us that grew up playing these genres in the past by giving it a fresh coat of paint with a few tweaks. Nothing wrong with that.
With that being said, so what? lots of arcade games got home releases and it doesn't make them any less fun.
As an aside, I'd love to see an HD remake of the original NES/SNES games with maybe some extra options like more enemies on the screen, extra levels and HD treatment.

The game looks awesome, but I'd rather it be an original beat 'em up inspired by Double Dragon than an officially licensed Double Dragon adaptation. The world of Double Dragon is inspired by Mad Max. And you just can't do _Mad Max Neon._ Even the cartoon and live action film adaptations attempted to make their worlds feel post-Apocalyptic. This is just 80s nostalgia cranked up to 11.

I agree that it was pretty bold of them to make the game pretty much a parody and perhaps shouldn't have used the Double Dragon name... but i still loved it for what it was. Neo Contra is another example of a game being chock-full of jokes and at first glance looking like a mockery of it's franchise, and it's also a great game. Sometimes good gameplay + a lot of humor does result in something great, even if very different from preceding titles.

The problem with neon (aside from the slow characters and odd models) is what the first guy said, It's basically a parody. Double dragon didn't exist in a vacuum. The cartoon, movie ect. The cartoon especially is more faithful than this games theme. DD is basically a hokuto clone. Neon is more of a weird parody of both double dragons and the 80s. This attempt at the 80s sucks. Because it wasn't how the 80s treated it.
Look at skullmegeddon. That is not a serious character, his very name is not a serious attempt at making a cool name. It's a joke name.
And serious doesn't mean a deep drama. it just means a straight forward presentation with less humour.
