  • This video is an IN-DEPTH review of the six leading rendering programs available to architects in 2023.
It focuses on speed and ease of use whilst maintaining a high quality of image.
Each program is benchmarked against the same set of criteria, and at the end of the video I compare 12 images (2 from each, 1 exterior & 1 interior) to put the debate to bed!
Who does it best? Wait until the end of the video to find out.

Tip: when you were looking at that plant pot contact shadow with the floor, you don't need to actually change the model or the lighting, here's what you can do: lift the pot by a few millimeters off the floor, in fact you should be doing that for every object that is in contact with another object. Or use ambient occlusion as a quick and dirty method to fake it. Ideally you want to chamfer edges that will make that gap between things, but if the geometry isnt good enough for a chamfer, lifting the objects by a few mm will do the trick.

Completely agree with some key points, lumion feels great for exterior but not good in interiors (new version improves on interiors but it's like a beta at this point and the exteriors even feel worse than 12), D5 is great at interiors and the viewport quality is great with is very helpful sometimes to show in real time the house to the clients, twinmotion improved a lot but unfortunately the new version has many bugs using path tracer, let's hope they fix those

Firstly, great video and I pretty much agree on all.
I've no experience with UE but plenty with all the others. I use VRay for SketchUp at work and D5 at the moment for home (sadly my work is also my hobby!). Would love to see a 'part 2' where you show and give a quick review of the short panning videos you were setting up in each. Personally, from a time perspective, speed of video is what pushed me towards D5 and I accept the minor shortfalls with the stills.
After you're video I'm now doing to dive back into TM as I haven't given it a spin since the recent updates, so thanks for the push.

Great video, thank you for making it! I use Blender, but the rest of my team doesn't know how to use it and probably won't ever use it due to the steeper learning curve than a Twinmotion. Twinmotion is what we currently use, but the interior lighting in low lit areas is frankly terrible. Your scene was well lit with a lot of windows so it did very well. I'm testing D5 and have gotten GREAT results, but their VR isn't working with our HTC Vive currently. (D5 VR is in beta...). I'm even testing UE5 and really like how fast I can get an animation with Lumion. BUT Lumion has its trouble right now too. (flickering!)
Anyway, thanks again. This is a tough topic to crack, and I think you did a great job and saved a lot of people a lot of time/money to figure this out!

Thank you for this great and very detailed and informative video! At the company where I work, we use D5 Render for all our images and video switching from Vray, and the speed of D5R is incredible, and precision is fantastic. A little tip is to use "rectangular lights" in all window and door openings when shooting interior, just like the good old "light portals" in Vray. That way you remove any splotches, dark spots or other errors because of too little lighting information, and you get much more beautiful light bounces in your scenes. I get why you don't use it in this video, where the main focus is speed, but you will get far nicer interior image quality that actually rivals the path tracer in Twinmotion. Exteriors in D5R are harder to get right, as they often become a bit gamey as you said yourself, but then again, D5R actually uses the Unreal4 engine, so this makes sense. Think of D5R as a stripped down Unreal 4 engine, where you only run real time ray tracing, instead of the old light mass render.
The length of this video is no problem if the content is this good! Please keep up the great work! 😀

I’m currently struggling with this right now; “gamey” exterior renders, and I don’t know how to overcome them. I love it for interiors, but exteriors are kicking my ass.

Absolutely agree with the final verdict. Started to take rendering extra serious since the start of 2021 and I have tried all these engines except Unreal. And I will say that the combined package of workflow speed, the library, the cost and output quality of Twinmotion is incredibly commendable. The recent addition of Lumen to Twinmotion has extremely raised the bar in terms of value for the engine.

In Unreal Engine, there is a better way to import datasmith files. Dataprep can serve as a pipeline for automatically assigning materials, changing models, adding lights, etc.. With the right pipeline and a good model, the manual work you are showing can be automated. Still working on this myself, but it's pretty slick.

To be honest , I stopped sending static images in my clients . I prefer links with hi res 360 images (= piece of pie for enscape) and trust me , your clients will love it ! ;)

Nice and very informative video. Personally, I don't agree with the score given to Enscape. I think that Ease of use + speed should have been a 10 since I believe this is the easiest rendering engine to use out of all the other 5 render engines. Render time and Making changes also should have been a 10 (for me) since it produces render in a matter of seconds or minutes depending on your scene. Also, making changes or edits is instant since it is real time. Special features I think could have also been given a slightly higher grade since it works natively in Revit, Rhino, Sketchup, Archicad and Vectorworks unlike other render engines that is limited in compatibility. Also supports VR. Animation is also I think the easiest to use among other render engine. Anyway, great content and looking forward to your future videos. ☺

    Thanks for the comparison! 👍
One reflection and question though on the aspect of time, that you might or might not have commented on - I unfortunately had to skip back and forth a bit and could not watch it all.
All programs but V-ray and Enscape seems to have a linear design and render process that leaves you with a separate model in the end. Is that so or can you go back in the original model to make changes, without loosing the render progress? - Which is so important in the aspect of time (!).
Long ago I tried out render programs that could link your original model to the program. However, that worked poorly and I eventually ended up just using an integrated renderer, like V-ray.
It was a while back now for sure though and things might have changed.
You might have touched upon this, but if not - or if anyone else can answer here - how do they work in that aspect? Is that weighed into the final verdict?
    Cheers! Thanks again! 👍

In my case as a visual artist for architecture and industrial design (as most Architects don't do 3D rendering, they just design). it is not how fast you can make your first render but how fast you can make the last. You should have pointed the ease of use from going from the 3D software, designing and constantly revising, then to rendering, again and again. Also important is how materials can be adjusted in the software easily and how it will look realistically, as well as with how the lights affects the material. Who cares about the asset library if you cannot even tweak its materials or a client could not even source it the real world. And there are tons already for Sketchup, well prepared and most comes in groups that you don't have to spend time choosing one at a time. One more thing clients don't care about the rain or fog or how the grass moves, no one will do it everyday in the office.

Agreed - I work and teach in interior design and we're debating what platform to continue teaching/supporting since we'd been using Enscape (was free but not anymore for students) on top of Sketchup and Revit. But now with Twinmotion packaged with Revit we're going to let students pick. So I'm spending my summer break testing them all and Twinmotion adds a lot of work straight out of the gate in fixing/replacing all the custom (aka real world) material finishes since most of them don't come through. The exterior and animation features are really nice, but on a typical project our students will have 8-10 interior renderings and maybe one exterior (which isn't even necessary in our field...more to give them practice when they're part of a real world team).

The analysis-charts you created, to evaluate each solution -- clearly *Twinmotion* was the winner.
In the video itself, in conclusion you contradict this, stating that *you prefer Vray.*
What really has me confused is that in the conclusion, you spoke about the quality, rather than which is best for *busy architects* (the title/intent of the video).
In short, I very much appreciate the great video -- however, it may be worth adding some notes in the description to clarify a few points. In addition, it would be very helpful to *compare the nice analysis* you did on each software in the conclusion, as the video is about a holistic comparison of all features, not merely the render-quality.

    • @ArchAdemia
      @ArchAdemia  Před rokem +2

Thanks so much for watching the video, you clearly have watched it through too! Fair comment above....Although, I would argue that I do make it clear toward the end of the video that Twinmotion is the winner, I just give Vray an honourable mention, more than anything. Further to this, for clarity - my point is about speed, but still with a resulting quality - if it was ONLY about speed, Lumion would win, but in my opinion (as explained) Lumion doesn't yield a good enough quality in the same/similar timeframe as Twinmotion. But, all good points you make, and I'm glad we can have this discussion in the comments, because it adds to the explanation overall. I was becoming wary at how long the video was getting, to be honest!

      @InspiredScience Před rokem +2

@@ArchAdemia - Thanks for the reply. I wonder if I misunderstood, I will re-watch the final summary.
I believe that part of my point was missed; I was referring to the nice charts you constructed showing the pros/cons in each area of evaluation.
I thought it would be great to assemble those together at completion and discuss holistically.
Regarding Lumion, I don't know that I'd rate it the most productive. It has the most kludgey interface, they refuse to support 3D mice (odd position for an architectural product), and so many things are counter-intuitive.
I also think it's good to rate each product with a rough estimation of "Future-Proofness" (lack of a better name atm). In short, D5 has come further, in less time, than any other product. TwinMotion/Unreal are obviously going to improve/remain in market no matter the ArchViz adoption, which gives them a very good outlook score, as well. Lumion, OTOH, started far ahead of others and really hasn't improved at a pace anywhere near competitors.
In many ways I see Lumion like Enscape, which is to say that the people who love it, are most likely the people that are unwilling to try new things.
Unrelated to my subjective, potentially inaccurate viewpoint, I hope this premise makes sense and perhaps you'd like to combine screenshots of your charts and some added commentary on your site, for others to follow-up.
      Just an idea :)

Been using Lumion and Twinmotion for more than 7 years. Don´t really understand all the hate that Lumion gets (i guess it´s because of the price tag), but the quality that i can extract with Lumion (even now more with the Raytracing) with just a small effort in effects tweeking doesn´t fall short, at all, in comparison to Twinmotion (exception in the reflections, but its an issue already being adressed according to Lumion´s road map). There´s no "better software" when in comes to these issues. There´s the more suitable software according to specific projets. In terms of exterior renders, Lumion continues to be my "go to" software, especially because of the render speed. Interiors, Twinmotion and Unreal are excellent. The Path Tracer is awesome!

I am using twinmotion for the first time in uni and I do have to agree on how practical it is for its quality of renders. It's definitely not perfect though, it currently feels kinda buggy especially when the file exceeds 1gb.
On addition to that, I think they have a lot to improve on for animations and video exports :
Path traced videos are a pain to export, the denoiser tool isn't optimized for videos so you'll have to have atleast 256 samples per frame which takes AGES to render (it probably takes around 100 times more time to render compared to a non path traced video). If the denoiser tool is optimized, we'll be able to bump down the samples to 100-50 to have an acceptable video! Blender has been doing it right this whole time, their denoiser works well in videos!
Another minor critique is actually on one of it's strong points : simplicity. It's probably me just being a noob but on my first project i'm already starting to feel the limitations of how far I could complexify the model (example : texturing work, adding imperfections, which is possible using decals from quixel but far from perfect), would be nice to have a "texture paint" tool of some sort like they did with the vegetation.
And I really have to thank you for this in depth video! I was wondering if I should learn Unreal Engine or Blender next but looks like Unreal Engine won't be very beneficial for me. I'm giving Blender a try because it gives a lot more flexibility in modeling, can be a great tool for other things like animations, and most importantly, like Unreal Engine, it's free!

D5 is the future king, the software is very recent and yet it has already caught up with all its competitors.
Development is very fast, the UX/UI is constantly improving, ultra-fast on an RTX4xxxx and they're developing their own AI tools to speed up calculations.
For architects, assets are one of the key time-saving elements, and D5 is way ahead of the rest.
For those who doubt it, give D5 another year or two and they'll be the untested leaders.
Only Twinmotion could compete with D5 if Epic wanted to invest more resources.
A thought for Lumion, the fallen king, they're stuck with the transition to RayTracing with which they've had and still have a lot of development worries. And the software as a whole is aging, especially the UX/UI, which is really outdated and can be improved on many points.

Hi there, thanks so much for watching! Please read this comment for some additional context to the video.
I can’t believe the number of views this video has had and I’m flattered by the number of comments, even if some of them are critical of my ability 😂
I’ve created this pinned comment as I think there’s been some misunderstanding, given the comments around both quality of imagery, and my use of unreal engine. The title of the video is ‘what’s the best for BUSY architects’, the purpose of this is to stress test each program under strict time constraints and benchmark factors.
Please go into this video on the premise that it's not about what’s the best when it comes to quality alone. I’ve barely spent any time at all on the images, with no post production. But, this is the very point... What can deliver an image of acceptable quality in no time. Of course, those more experienced in certain programs will do a quicker job than I, but I’m trying to level the playing field somewhat by giving each a limited amount of time and effort.
Whichever creates the best image, under these constraints, utilising in-built asset libraries and rendering tech, wins. I fully accept that the resulting image of UE5 and Vray is not doing those pieces of software justice, but that’s actually the point of the video - the other real-time render engines perform better under tight deadlines, with much larger libraries of models, textures, more intuitive UI's and shallower learning curves. Whereas, some are only suitable when you have more time at your disposal, in my opinion.
Apologies, if that’s at all confused in the video, but nonetheless, I hope you all appreciate the effort gone into it and how it will help people save time and money in their decision-making process, but all views are solely my own opinion and I welcome opinions that are contrary in order to create a useful debate in the comments section.
    Happy rendering!

I was surprised by how good the Twin Motion images were -- interior and exterior -- and equally surprised that the Unreal Engine interior was only so-so. Also the Vray interior was just bad. I'm a D5 Render guy for speed, assets, realism and pricing.

you forgot corona render better than vray, its a CPU friendly and easy to use, but for Twinmotion is the fastest. I use this two always against vray and D5 render

Thanks so much for watching and contributing Joyd. This video was a test of speed in the main, but with a sense of 'what can still produce the goods', and in my opinion Twinmotion does this best. In my experience not a lot of architects use Corona as it's exclusive to 3ds max & Cinema 4D, where architects use Revit and SketchUp. However, I've received A TON of messages about it, so will do more research on the product and will provide a follow up video in due course.

Yeah, you're not wrong - they ALL could be better, but I limited the amount of time on each to not create any bias (as best as possible, at least). I may end up doing a follow up video to touch on quality difference without the distraction of speed and other benchmarks. Thanks for watching!

I agree, the Lumion one is lacking in a lot of the features that would have made it look better. It sort of comes off like he didn't like Lumion at all and he didn't take the same effort setting up the sun/materials/lighting as some of the others.

@@ArchAdemia I was a long time vray user, then I switched to Enscape as a design/visualize tool but now I switched fully on Vantage. With this speed to quality ratio is hard to compare with anything. True, it has a lots of limitations and it is slowly developed by Chaos but even tough is just a great archviz tool in our studio.
