It's hilarious that watchmojo released a few top tens that were sponsored by lord of the rings gollum and now they've done a full 180 and are calling it the worst game of 2023.
At least they got the bag 😂
Agreed, and I wish these sorts of hate on games would put the emphasis on publishers being the problem and not the developers. Most developers want to make good games even if they aren't the ones they want to work at. Publishers just want the money and for the most part, don't care how things pan out. Case in point Gollum developers getting fired when the publisher gave them such little support and time to build this game, which itself should have just been a max 5 hour linear story
You mean best games :^)
@@HanmaHeiromaybe make NS edition?😅
@@KaliU-ix2kf I'm not sure what NS edition means.
The most common reason for all these terrible games, including for the ones years before, is poor development and corporate interference.
While the day after was basically and out and out scam
The best conspiracy theory I've read about Gollum, Kong and Walking Dead is that the studio is a front for money launderers. 🤣
I'm not convinced that the entirety of development on Gollum wasn't carried out by an AI
How would that even work?
The game should came out 20 years ago
@@margarethmichelina5146even then it would have flopped. No amount of hype for the movies would have saved it.
It was a bigger german gaming Studio. A local gaming Serie called "gametwo" made a long Story what happens behind the scene. the Person to blame was their ceo and how he handle everything.
@@domdom2966 I'll have to look for that
So Gamemill actually published 3 of the games on this list, they're behind Kong, Avatar, AND Walking Dead. This is their MO. They get licensed content, and pump out a cheap and broken games inside a year of development with a very strict budget. And this has been going on with them for so long, they are also the publishers of Big Rigs Over the Road Racing from 2003!
They are the ‘LJN’ of our modern time
Also you know it’s bad when the folks behind Big Rigs made these, let alone the same god tier trash 20 years later😂
The Cobra Kai games aren't that bad.
The Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl games, particularly 2, are actually really fun.
i’m actually so GLAD someone pointed this out. and the developers who *actually* made walking dead, avatar, kong etc? has made actually good games. it’s those titles which they were financially obligated to make in only a single year, at the same time (meaning either during or one after another) were not their doing.
Sad that people actually paid money for these games
The fact that I never heard of any of these games save for the top 2, and even then because everyone keeps pointing out how terrible they were, is everything you need to know about the quality of these games.
I heard of the vampire one and I was actually kind of excited, I'm kinda bummed that it's bad
#10: Unholy
#9: Crime Boss: Rockay City
#8: Testament: The Order of High-Human
#7: Loop8: Summer of Gods
#6: Redfall
#5: Greyhill Incident
#4: Avatar: The Last Airbender - Quest for Balance
#3: The Walking Dead - Destinies
#2: Skull Island: Rise of Kong
Dishonorable Mentions
- Clive ‘N’ Wrench
- Quantum Error
- Colossal Cave
- Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
- DreamWorks All Star Car Racing
#1: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
#1 should be Starfield.
Thank you so much for doing this! This is what I was looking for and I appreciate the time you took to do this!
Gollum remake game is bloody boring
I’m surprised Forspoken wasn’t on the list.
Modern warfare 3 should have been on the list
Kong and Gollum definitely deserve their spots on this list
Same
Sure that Kong wasn't released in 1993? I refuse to believe that with the tech we have today, that is the best they could come up with
@@isobaramark7032 they were just being very, VERY lazy
Kong is like ps1 game
@@jarrygarry5316 it would have fit better if it came out in the PS1 era
Oh, boy... if only this list came out after The Day Before launched.
The fact that I haven't even heard of most of these entries and honorable mentions and that they mostly just boil down to forgettable shovelware is really telling for just how good of a year for gaming this has been, it is truly one for the ages!
I also want to shout out a special piece of shit that didn't make the list, Goodbye Volcano High. Truly an awful game made by awful developers. Imagine being outdone by 4Chan of all things...
By "awful developers," you mean they were pretentious jerks or...?
@@Chaos89P I don't know the full history but to me they seem more like just some rich fucks who use bribery to get their way.
There is no other feasible way I can fathom that they somehow got their shitty game announced in a high-profile PS5 presentation alongside games like God of War.
There's more but you can go looking if you want.
GameMill pushed out 3 bad games in one year? HOW ARE THEY NOT SHUT DOWN OR SUED YET?
The Walking Dead: Destinies has the perfect game idea that I dreamed about,
But they F**ked it all up so bad!😩
Yup. So disappointed
Tell Tale Games The Walking Dead was much better.
Just noticed that 3 out of the top 4 were made by the same company: GameMill Entertainment. Says a lot about them, doesn't it?
At least they had success with Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2
A diamond among turds indeed
2023 isn't over yet. You forgot The Day Before.
Seeing licensed games top the list remind me of the "good old days" of LJN on the SNES.
Even LJN would look at these games and be like “seriously are you even trying”
Some things never change.
Should have waited a couple weeks to get the day before in here.
Haha, very fun to see my session of Greyhill Incident here. Great list!
I'm surprised 8:46 isn't number one but I'm not disagreeing with WatchMojo's pick for "Worst Game of 2023 ( 11:08 )".
You forgot when the devs decided to use ChatGPT to write a fake apology post
Dishonorable Mention: Pre-Patched Lords of the Fallen 2023
I would still consider that my most disappointing game this year even after the patch.
@@Solh0undedgy
Congratulations Gamemill for claiming all 3 of the top 3 spots
They live up to the name
the new LJN
@@sytherwusky Can't wait to see which of the two is the WORST
I think it’s a travesty that Flashback 2 wasn’t on this list even as an honorable mention. This game besmirched the name of the classic 2D Amiga platformer when it released with terrible gameplay that was frustrating to play, shockingly bad visuals for a 2023 video game complete with lazy character portrait stills that look like they were AI generated, and an infestation of bugs such as a boss that gets stuck on a flight of stairs, and Conrad Hart sometimes taking damage for no reason. And did I mention this game was developed/published by Microids, who were also behind the terrible XIII remake and Garfield: Lasagna Party?
I'm actually shocked for GameMill how they can make many bad games in a year. And how they got many big names like Kong and Avatar and Walking dead
The Day Before is the winner!!!
Can you do a versus video on which TV show based on Video Games is better between the Sonic Boom TV Show & Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures?
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I can never buy games right after they're released, because the new games are too expensive. Another advantage of buying the games late is getting to know the game by reading and watching good reviews like this one, as the months go by. 🤣
And you are lucky we live in an era you can now everything of a game with all the info we can get.
In the 80s and 90s? Absolutely awful times
the one thing that had me mad about the greyhill incident is how the aliens look, to say the atmosphere is scary the aliens sure wasnt
Kong, Avatar and Walking Dead are all from the same publisher. Black list them ..
Game Mill? Isn't that the same company that did the "Nickelodeon All Star Brawl" games?
As for your Dishonorable mention: I don't find Clive 'N' Wrench bland. I followed the developer on their Patreon for a while. I'm just surprised it was finally released.
That King Kong as the thumbnail 🤣🤣😂😂
I’m surprised they also didn’t mention how the crunch stole Christmas where the other player literally can’t do anything
Amazing video watch mojo of the worst games of 2023,fantastic job. I kind like somewhat enjoy lord of the rings gollum and Redfall too. I wonder how long they work on the game of the walking dead destinies to be so bad?
If only you could’ve waited for The Day Before……
After making the holy trinity : Gollum, Kong and TWD game I am pretty sure it exists only to do money laundry.
How the hell is Stray Souls not on this list? Silent Hill: Ascension I can understand, as it's more of an interactive TV show. But Stray Souls is easily worse than Gollum and Kong, featuring an AI enemy routine that barely functions and horrible voice acting. Not to mention 95% of it's art assets were done using an AI scraper/generator.
It’s unfortunate that the King Kong game was a dud because the comic storyline by Joe DeVito, it’s based on is actually pretty good
Hooo, boy, and I thought 2023 was a great year for video games with Spiderman 2, Baldur Gate 3, etc being released, but compared to these garbage games, Gollum, King Kong, Walking Dead: Destinies, there were a bunch of stinkers that shouldn't have been released to the public smh
2023 was one of the best Gaming years since the Ps3/360 era probably. But with all those great game. Game of the year contender or even 1 Game of The Decade Contender. There was a lot shit this year too. Sometimes I Had the feeling that some developers fight over the Worst Game of the Year.
AEW Fight Forever should have been on the list, between bad graphics, low roster count and they cared more about mini games than match types. Plus charging $12 for 2 wrestlers in DLC
I wanna try and play that walking dead game and crime boss... but I'm going to wait a bit
What alos hillarious about the gollum game is that they eventually put out an "apology" for how bad the game was and managed to fuck that up by having lots of spelling eroors including the very game they where apologizing for
ATLA: Quest for Balance is the TLA 2010 movie of Avatar games
Wasn’t M.Night’s movie tie in game to the movie was the 2010 movie all over again? I personally think that Avatar has a rough time when making video games based on the manga.
Quantum Error was the 2nd game I had returned. HellBoy, thank god for demos.
4-1. There is really no excuse for licensed games to be in this state in this day and age. Good licensed games are VERY MUCH A THING nowadays. Spongebob Battle For Bikini Bottom, The Simpsons Hit and Run, The Batman Arkham Series, Ducktales, Hogwarts Legacy, Mad Max, Alien Isolation, Injustice, The Ubisoft South Park Games, The Middle Earth Series, Kingdom Hearts, Epic Mickey, The Insomniac Spider-Man Games, VARIOUS Star Wars Games like KOTOR and the Star Wars Jedi Games, AND ALL The Travelers Tales Lego Games have repeatedly proven that! The difference is that they knew that just having a recognizable name attached to it WASN'T ENOUGH and that they NEEDED good gameplay to back that up! But one thing many people or publishers don't realize or acknowledge is that stuff like all the examples I gave can ONLY happen due to good leadership. Sony and Insomniac knew that rushing the game out the door to meet fan hype/demand WASN'T THE ANSWER and that they needed to take as much time as they need to complete Spider-Man 2, and hey, Wolverine is shaping up to be another smash.
Also, regarding the number 1 entry, the studio put out an "apology" so half-assed and paper-thin you swear it was written by a soulless robot. Well, funny story, that is actually the case. They actually used AI to write it, no wonder the studio closed.
Gamemill also had a rough go with Nickelodeon Kart Racers 1 and it shows, no voice acting, simplistic animations, stiff controls, and the worst sin for a crossover kart racer, ABSOLUTE BAREBONES CONTENT! Compare this with Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, a large roster of characters from a variety of Nickelodeon shows. How many characters does Kart Racers 1 have? 12 characters. From 4 shows. 3 Spongebob characters, 3 Rugrats characters, 2 Hey Arnold Characters, and all 4 of the Ninja Turtles. Where the fuck is Timmy Turner? Where the Fuck is Danny Phantom? Where the Fuck is Jimmy Neutron? And as I mentioned before, the characters that DID make the cut were missing 2 crucial characteristics: Personality and their voice acting. A smash?! HA! The real smash actually happened with Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, which MASSIVELY expanded the roster and gameplay, tightened the controls, AND added in full voice acting. So, at least they learned their lesson and evolved with each sequel. Now if a slip up only happened once or twice, this wouldn't be a big issue. You can make a few mistakes when putting out a good game, it's easy to screw up. But Gamemill just keeps making the EXACT same mistakes (1-year deadline and quanity over quality) DESPERATELY HOPING AND PRAYING IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN THE NEXT TIME THEY DID IT!
"He never knew when to quit." - Ernest Scared Stupid
So unless one of the higher ups gets replaced or someone gets a Buddha-level epiphany, we can only hope that they do better in the future. Unfortunately, given the stubbornness of some publishers and companies, that just isn't the world we live in. So it is with fated breath for now that I hereby dub Gamemill Entertainment "The New LJN."
these are nice licesned games you have mentioned. I agree that Insomniac and Sony knew what they were doing. That's why Marvel's Spider Man 2 is not only a smash hit but an amazing game. I am definetly excited for Wolverine
Glad UFO Robot Grendizer isn’t in that list.
I use to love this anime since 2015
2 Things
1: I have a habit of playing and enjoying bad games. ( Resi 6, Werewolf: The Apocalypse- Eartblood, Thief (2014). So The Walking Dead: Destines is right up my alley! (As long it doesn't crash a lot!
2: I love Clive N Wrench so calling one of the "Worst Games of 2023" Is a little strange. Almost like WatchMojo did not do any research whatsoever!
No Enchanted Portals? And what about the bad games releasing in December?
Can you do comic book origin of Marvel's Firepower and Cobalt Man?
Kinda glad that Forspoken didn’t show up on this list. Some people just want to jump on the hate bandwagon without even playing the game themselves.
Did this a week or two early; The Day Before...
Was that avatar game made in 2003?!? Wtf?! It’d be so easy to make a badass avatar game I feel like. Could almost reskin Harry Potter
I can't wait for the top 10 Anime Fights of 2023 because both One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen just straight up gave us the best fights this year
Gear 5 Luffy
Sukuna vs Mahoraga.
You forgot to add Mortal Kombat 1 Nintendo Switch
I was told of a review on the Gollum game. It was 'we hates it'
Hey, WatchMojo. You guys should definitely do a list of the Top 30 Video Games with the Best Waifus. I have a couple of examples you guys should mention.
Examples:
League of Legends
Senran Kagura series
Danganronpa series
Street Fighter series
Final Fantasy series
Tekken series
Fire Emblem series
Onechanbara series
Honkai series
Overwatch series
Guilty Gear series
SoulCalibur series
Persona series
Azur Lane
The King of Fighters/Fatal Fury series
Dynasty Warriors series
BlazBlue series
Tales series
Tsukihime/Melty Blood series
Hyperdimension Neptunia series
Variable Geo series
Asuka 120% series
Samurai Shodown series
Virtua Fighter series
What do you think, WatchMojo? Would you mind doing this list?
Im shocked that Dreamorks all-star kart racing was an honorable mention. How is it bad? Dreamworks fans were waiting for that game. So why the sudden hate?
Same year where we got Spiderman 2 PS5, Lies of P, Super Mario Wonder, Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, RE4 remake, Trails into Reverie, and Street Fighter 6.
Balance must be achieved, I suppose.
My girlfriend and I tested Golum at PAX East. She hated it. I said "it has potential, but needs a bit more polish. But as an early build for something that has another year or two worth of development, its fine." The game came out a few months later
Watchmojo should`ve waited till 2024 to put the best and worst games of the year lists up, as there were more than 30 days left of new game releases to qualify. For example, The Day Before came out in December 2023 and the fact its studio shut down days after its release with the game itself getting pulled from sale proves its worth as a dishonorable mention at least.
Which one of these video games is exciting and worth playing?
I was really excited for walking dead destinies, thanks for the heads up
Gollum was a neat idea, unfortunately neat ideas do not always work
While most of these games deserve to be on this list.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd doesn't deserve to be a dishonorable mention as most gamers who played it and by played it I mean took the time to actually play through the whole game actually liked it and most review scores for it are in the mid to high 7s.
2023 must of been a good year for video games because I'm only familiar with 1 game on this list.
Dreamworks cart racing. Yeah, I still think it's a good game from the trailer. I'm surprised it's on this list, but I'm still interested in playing It.
I thought Enchanted Portals and Mortal Kombat 1 Switch might show up here
Was expecting much more from gollum tbh
Imagine what terrible games will be released in the future!😂
I feel that way about the stories in all Japanese games. I truly envy those of you who can enjoy them. I cannot. They always have the narrative depth of 80s B action flicks. I once told a guy I don't play Japanese games because I game to be immersed in a good story with compelling characters and he said, "Nobody plays Japanese games for the stories." And I said, "Yeah, that's why I don't play them." If you enjoy them, I'm sincerely glad you do. Truly. But for me, they are awful, man...
Really? All Japanese video games? Even Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Persona, Fire Emblem, Nier & Dark Souls?
Yeah, they don't do it for me. I know, I'm such a weirdo. But the storytelling is just not for me, man. I'm glad they work for you, though! I'm not one of those people that thinks just because something isn't my cup of tea, it shouldn't exist.@@C0LDMachine
@@C0LDMachine I think he means the ones that are more popular in Japan but niche in the West.
@@fallasleep9472 If that’s the case, then maybe he should’ve said that or referenced specific titles instead of broad stroking all Japanese games with his ridiculous statement
I think they should have a award show for worst video games
And the reward is a piece of copper balls because that is what anyone thinks of them.
Like the movies have the razzies
I won't play these games even,if they were free.
If it counts the switch version of mk1. Although they are improving it
I didnt expect *Danny Glover* to change race from Black to Mexican in *Crime Boss: Rockay City*
Honorable mention: Modern Warfare 3
$70 DLC that tried to be Tears of the Kingdom. The catch? Tears of the Kingdom was great and worth the asking price. Call of Claymore: Modern Snorefare 3 isn't.
I have to add Angry Birds 2. The once dominant of free games has now become a distant shell of it's former self. Game freezes, lagging, failed updates, ridiculous P2W transactions. A full boycott has gone viral and to this day is intensifying. Sad what greed can do to people.
Colossal Cave was a passion project to take a fully text-based original and see what they could do with it while keeping it in relatively constrained parameters. To not overdo it and ruin the original, so yeah maybe it's a little boring but like it tracks when you know the damn context of what their goal with the project was. Literally go watch Game Grumps interview with one of the project leads and then get back to me saying it's a "bad game"
Another dishonorable mention: Bluey: The Video Game, fans of the show will like the visuals but that's about it. With gameplay more shallow than a kiddie pool and not enough collectables, you can finish the whole game in under an hour. It would've been better as a mobile game rather than a full length console game.
Hellboy Web of Wyrd isn’t a bad game per se. It’s nice to see Mignola’s visuals translated to video game, but the game plays more like a PS1 game than a new one.
I never got why they thought making that Gollum game was a good idea in thr first place smh
What if we an Avatar video game that followed a whole new avatar?🤔
Gamemill are to the 2020’s what THQ were to the 1990’s. Although I don’t envisage Gamemill getting better over time the way THQ did.
Theres been so many bad games there needs to be 20 in this list
Now nobody remembers Forspoken, that tell us how tough this year was
Clearly no mention of Enchanted Portals, not that they deserve one..
Seriously. I want to know does WD Destines on Ps5 Crash alot or not?
Man I didnt even know there was a King Kong game this year rofl!
lol, you said 'Kim Bassinger' just like Homer Simpson did that one time
When i first saw the trailer of Skull island Rise of Kong, it already look awful and no improvment.
Gollum looks like Fable which came out in 2004.
That thumbnail is hilarious. IGN always deliver with amazing list and I expect this to be no different, absolutely legends.
Trying so hard are we ?
What IGN have to do with this?
They keep trying to copying everyone content..😂
Don't you mean WatchMojo, not IGN?
Can we just let go of The Walking Dead as a video game series?
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd could’ve been better, but it’s still the best Hellboy Game we have.
No mention of Forsaken is I big miss in my own opinion
You really couldn’t wait for Gangs of Sherwood or Avatar Frontiers of Pandora before making this list could you?
Why did gollem sound constipated in the opening
Just so you know, Redfall came out the same year as Hi-Fi Rush, another Bethesda game. What a contrast.
I'd rather play hi fi rush all over again than redfall 😊
Both are made by 2 VERY different studios under Bethesda's umbrella
Tango Gameworks made Hi-Fi Rush after the 2 Evil Within games and Ghostwire Tokyo
Arkane Studios made Redfall after the Prey reboot, Deathloop and the Dishonored series
Honestly, I expected more from Gollum, and I didn't even play it. I thought they were going to a prequel to the hobbit, showing his beginnings from simple minded fisherman Stoor to his cousin's murderer, to a thief with the ring, and then to the gradual devolution by the rings corruption into the creature, we know.
No Forspoken, MW3, The Day Before and Spider Man, list discarded.
Why people still insist doing The Walking Dead games? The Tv show suck and the games even more, there are no TWD playable.
Unholy is also a song by Sam Smith and Kim Peytas. I didn't know Unholy was also a game.
State of Decay 2 feels more The Walking Dead than The Walking Dead game itself.
