- This is the engine out of my shop truck, the engine had severe lifter noise and oil consumption at the time of removal. from everything I see this trucks engine is completely original.

Jonathan W has the "Cat scan" and you got the "Leroy like"! Cool!
Anyone else look inside that engine and hear those four little
Irish guys singing....
We're the Rocker Arm assembly.....assembly assembly
We're the Rocker Arm assembly and we DON'T like dirt
But detergent gasoline.....keeps our engine running smooth and clean

As you say, regular maintenance with quality products goes a long way to keeping things in good shape!
My brother's 5.9 in his 98 Grand Cherokee broke the front lifter on the passenger side. We put the 5.2 cam and lifters in it. They definitely make more power that way. He can get it to break traction on all 4 tires on dry pavement.
For a 5.9 with the miles you've stated it's in very good shape for rebuilding. Looking forward to the next video stay safe.
Love watching you do jobs like this - almost as much as Leroy❤️
Every now and then the "perfect" engine comes out of the factory, you've found one of them 🙂
Nice video and chocked with information!
For 300,000 miles, that is amazing that it is in that good of shape!
I work for an oreillys and have assembled one of those stands and the cherry picker. The bolts come like that from the factory and it sucks especially when you’re building it in the middle of the warehouse with phones ringing off the hook
When I was young, my dad had a '68 D-100 that had a 318. There have been upgrades over the years, to that and the 360. But they are hardy and they probably made a billion of them...
As good as that 5.9 looks inside, the part that amazes me is you having a 2nd gen Ram with no rust...
Thanks for the video. I hope that you will have more videos on the bus build too.
a Wednesday engine! you gotta get lucky sometime
Greetings from the UK
Enjoyed that as always thanks Tyler looking forward to the next video
Definitely a standard size. Factory replacement mopar bearings will have a .001, .010, .020 ect stamped on the shell if they are oversized. I pulled a 2001 Jeep 4.0 that all the bearings were .001 oversized. It must have had a slightly to large of bearing clearance from the engine plant that they corrected.
I have a 98 grand cherokee with the 5.9 165,000 miles. I love it.
I'm not a mechanic and I'm impressed with what you found or didn't find. Makes me not so squeamish about a higher mileage Hemi when I'm able to look for my next truck.
Gotta love the way those engine stands wiggle, just reassuring AF. I lean towards Glyptal for one reason, cleaner engine. Filling in the surface texture on cast makes for less coke and carbon build up in the engine. Anything you can do to keep it cleaner is time well spent IMO.
Always find your videos instructive 😊 just the greatest!
I had a three wheel engine stand, really bad design, putting so much weight on one wheel. I always felt like I was about to tip the engine over when I moved it. Got rid of it and got a four wheel stand, much better stability and easier to move.
Definitely do the gasket on the bottom of the intake had to do mine year ago
Leroy for quality control manager!
The PCV systems of SBF engines of the 80s-90s era would cause them to look all nasty inside even with good maintenance.
I had a 95 2500 with a 360 sold it at 217K running strong 💪
Most of those heads have cracks between the valves. Most of the time those never crack to coolant though and don't hurt anything.
Bout to say the same thing. Went through 3 sets of heads at the salvage yard before I gave up an just bought some aftermarket heads.
I would say maybe wrong type of oil or right oil wrong climate, maybe should of used an additive like Prolong Super Lubricants PSL11000 Engine Treatment other than that it could of gone another 100,000 or so more miles.
cool video , keep them coming
Lovin the VVT
👍
Wow thats sludgee.. add a couple spoon-fuels of seafoam in it. Leave it in there..replace rings , all oil seals, bearings .no need to send it off.. lots of these 95+ trucks do better with a trailer pull
The old mechanics that I know call those Quaker state motors, all full of sludge.
It was the PCV design.
Yup im one of them old me hanics .. your exaclty right we use to say that when seeing an engine thats like that.. not saying its no good or junk enegine by no means it was jus a sayin we had lol .. mostly cause of the oil sludge from babke seals no good an such an the old quaker state oil / quaker sludge oil we nick named it if you used it lol .. i havent heard someone say that quaker statement in a long time .. so i had to respond to you an chat about it as well thanks for the memories lol cheers man 👍
@@DarrensTruckzs glad to hear someone else remember that! Cheers!
Indy,,you may make it better,,but,,,gona be hard to make it more dependable,,
Have you had time to complete the work on your bus?
Great you have little wear on mains and rod bearings, on that let's hope heads have not to bad
Question not critisism, why do you not steam clean an engine before stripping it? I know you will look for oil leaks etc but you could do that, then clean it and dismantle a much cleaner engine?
I'm no mechanic btw!
👍
It got cleaned after teardown. Easier to manage and now I know this It's worth the effort.
It’s worth it to send it out to be cleaned and cook the sludge out.
23:23 is that metal a piston cooler?
My 92 had a magnum 318 , ran like a scalded dog , not a big fan of the keg intake, the magnums seem to make all the power and torque above 3500 rpm
The later intakes did away with the divider, and you can further improve on them by welding in pieces to eliminate the dead space between runners.
Did it come out of a Jeep or a Dodge?
Any videos coming of your bus
Not much wear at all on that block. Should be nice once you're done freshening it up. Since I'm not yet a member of your patreon page, are there plans to use the Cometic head gaskets, along with the ARP bolts?
Well I was planning on ARP bolts but summit keeps delaying them, so I may start looking for alternatives. As for head gaskets I'll se what my overhaul kit came with and most likely upgrade from there.
@@Spyke383 Sounds good. 👍🏻
What is Glyptol?
Glyptal is a red paint that acts like rainx but for oil. It sheds it off helping more efficiently return oil and prevent build up.
Why are cams so much money?
A "stall" convertor ?????????
A stall torque converter lets the engine get into the power band before locking up the transmission into gear. It's like slipping the clutch for an automatic transmission. They come in different rpm ranges
Result.
I've seen worse welsh (freeze) plugs too. Lol
Trick flow heads
The thing is fuckin mint just needs a really really good clean
For the amount of abuse this engine has seen I couldn't be happier with the condition it's in. Hopefully in the next week or two we'll have it in the flatbed.

Why aren’t you using impact sockets ?
What better way to stress test harbors freight chrome sockets than on a ¾" drive milwaukee. Honestly hate impact sockets outside of specific uses.
Not variable....just worn...
