oh, hell no!! you've seen what weather can do to sat nav and rdf ... not to mention storm water in the electronics... oh, that's right, you have a telephone... lol
My son is in the US Coast Guard. They keep paper charts in case of electronics failures. They chart plot every entry and departure of port, navigation entries, etc. .
I gave up paper charts years ago! On my Viking 65 I’ve got two chart plotters and one B&G Zeus’s MFD and Navionics on my iPhone, so for me it’s a no brainer. Do I miss paper charts? No I certainly do not. Yes I grew up with paper charts and plotting a position on them, and not having to hold a paper chart down in the wind, or trying to not get it wet from salt spray, it used to be a right PIA! The new chart plotters tell you in an instant exactly where are 24/7 I’ll never go back to paper ever again. Looking at a paper chart and I think two things, damn I haven’t seen one of those in years and how Quaint.
I am curious. When is the last time a recreational ( non professional boater) commenting here, bought the most current chart for their area of boating. Prior to the price increase, it was noticed by the US gov't that ships were required by regulation to have on board a full set of current and corrected charts for the area transiting in...recreational boaters did not have this requirement.
Thank you for watching. It's a matter of one's comfort level in regard to risk. For some, the bare minimum is fine. I believe the real danger is thinking that having a chart is the same as having an accurate chart or having a compass is the same as having an accurate one. CUOTO
Grrrr. Ok Tim, you don't have to Twist my arm so hard. I am going over to look at what you put up...And Sponge Bob said that it better be good, or it's the Krusty Krab for you. LOL CUOTO ✌
The price of paper charts is enough to give them up😮 I remember whe the price was $1.50. Now, one source for Lake Ontario $27.00 Imray A 12 Puerto Rico $28.00
Thank you for watching Walter. No. It just means that if you don't have a current sight reduction table/book, your sextant wouldn't work anyway. Plotting is a skill I don't think you will ever be sorry you learned But tomes are changing. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Lol ! I always say that because in aviation pilot's are always reliant on that stuff. I would carry some paper just for that one day failure ! Enjoy your channel Captain. ! See you on the one !
Hi Tim. What do you do if, just if, your tugboat's generator were to fail? Do you have inverters to give you ac from back up batteries until the chief gets it sorted? Hope I'm not tempting fate! I have an old chart of the Tyne just for my own interest and did do some amendments a while back but it is very tedious isn't it.
Thank you for watching and supporting the channels Norm! If we lost both generators, we wouldn't be able to steer, so navigation wouldn't really be a thing. CUOTO
I departed sabine light tug for Norfolk tug Emmy lou, formerly known as the tug Nike from Seabulk. The boat had just come out of the yard, new electronics, etc. I cut out at fourchon for Rebeca shoal lost electronic plotters ais everything. Paper charts got me back to Norfolk. I will never rely on these "visual aids" always have paper charts. Be cool stay safe.

Charts do "Malfunction" Spent many off watches perusing Notices to Mariners doing chart corrections.
As soon as they make a Garmin that smells like a new NOAA chart, I'll switch.
Hahaha
Thank you for watching Jerry. Unfortunately, your NOAA charts are not going to smell new anymore. 😂 CUOTO

Thank you for watching Randy. Is it a training vessel? All the deployed assets I'm told have gone 100 percent paperless. CUOTO

You can't compare a weekend pilot in a Cessna with professionals. Airlines went paper-free years ago.
