To answer your question circa 7:28 - Wednesday is named so after an old English proverbial nursery rhyme, according to what day your child was born on:
"Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
*Wednesday's child is full of woe* ,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child that's born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and bright and good and gay."
    The more you know!

This movie was a "throwback" at the time... an homage to both the 1960's American TV Sitcom of the same name, as well as the single panel NEW YORKER cartoons by Charles Addams that inspired it.... there are jokes here lifted from both sources. There was even an Addams family cartoon in the 1970s, and one in the 90s.

this is one of the best remakes ever. pretty much everyone made the role their own and made it uniquely iconic without disrespecting the original. there is also a sense of love for the original that a lot of remakes seem to miss out on.

It's really remarkable how far back this goes, and how simple the source of it all actually is. Those New Yorker Magazine cartoons began in 1938 and continued until Charles Addams died in 1988. And all there was to them was single black and white pencil drawings with brief witty captions -- all based on the irony of a "normal" American family that happens to be gothic ghouls who aren't even fully aware they are weird. All the main characters were there in the cartoons, though I'm not sure they were even named until they made them into a 1/2 hour comedy TV show in the '60s.

Thing isn't a pet. He and Gomez were best friends as children and he now works for the family as a servant. It's theorised that his parents were also servants of the Addams family and he inherited the role. Don't let his job title fool you, though. Gomez still sees him as a friend and equal. In fact, the entire family treats him with love and respect. He may not be related to them by blood but he's still considered a member of the family, just like Lurch.
That's how he was in the old TV show, anyway. They don't say whether it's also true in the movies. The films did change Fester's relationship to the family so they might have done the same with Thing. Fester was originally Morticia's uncle, not Gomez' brother.

The old tv show ( which was in black & white ) was based on the Charles Addams cartoons. The family had for example in their "playroom" things like a rack ( torture device to slowly stretch a body ). The simple solution for doing the character of Thing ( the hand ) then was to just have small boxes on tables with a hinged lid. The hand actor hid underneath the table. The actor who played Lurch was Ted Cassidy, a naturally tall man who had a very deep voice. He wasn't intended to have lines, but answering the door in an episode he ad-libbed "You rang?" and with his deep voice they knew it was gold. Wednesday's actor was a child roughly age 5. The Pugsley actor was a bit older. Fester was played by Jackie Coogan, an American actor and comedian who began his film career as a child actor in silent films. Coogan's role in Charlie Chaplin's film "The Kid" made him one of the first child stars in the history of Hollywood.
Cousin It ( the walking hair creature ) on the show did speak in a funny voice that audiences couldn't understand.

The Addams Family started as a series of cartoons by Charles Addams that appeared in New Yorker magazine. It was made into a TV series in 1964-66, and several of the characters who had no names in the magazine cartoons were given names. There was a copyright hassle when the movie came out in 1991, because the studio had licensed the rights to the characters from Addams, but they used the names from the TV series without licensing them as well.

The thing is, Charles Addams came up with the character names himself, so The Chas & Tee Addams Estate own the characters & their names. Paramount Pictures & MGM only own the film & TV rights, even if the _Wednesday_ streaming series airs on Netflix & not Max (Warner Discovery's streaming service) nor Paramount+ (owned by Viacom, parent company of Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Bravo TV, etc.).

The Addams Family single-panel cartoons were first published in the New York Times in 1938; they did eventually end up in New Yorker magazine and also Playboy magazine. Charles Addams continued churning out cartoons until his death in 1988.
The early TV series brought the characters to the small screen, starring John Astin (Sean's father) as Gomez Addams and Carolyn Jones as Morticia. The show's producer added a new character, Thing.
The show was such a success that a rival national TV network developed their own version of the Addams Family they christened "The Munsters", with a vampiress mother Lily, a Frankenstein husband Herman, a werewolf child Eddie, and a normal teenaged daughter Marilyn; Marilyn was an object of pity for being 'so strange' (she was a gorgeous blonde). Lily's Dracula-like father (Grandpa) also lived with them.
"The Addams Family" was the better show; it was more committed to the premise, had better writing, and was a lot weirder. "The Munsters" was 'Addams Family light'.

The name Wednesday comes from the Nursery Rhyme 'Monday's Child':
"Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace, Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go, Friday's child is loving and giving, Saturday's child works hard for a living, But a child that is born on the Sabbath day is blithe and bonny, good and gay”

Gomez and Morticia are one of the few "middle aged" couples on TV/in movies who can say that
    A) They still sleep in the same bed.
    B) They're still sexually active.
    C) They're still in love with each other and find new things to love about each other.
    D) They genuinely like their kids.
And, if Wednesday's great-aunt was burned at the steak in 1706, that implies she's an aunt of Morticia/Gomez and that at least one of them *is several hundred years old* if this movie is set in 1991, when it was released.

"Cousin It ", the all hair person, was around 20 years before Star Wars. The Addams family was a comic in the New Yorker way back when. In 1964 the Addams Family came to TV where we older people were introduced to the characters and the Addams family theme was created. I read the theme is one of the most recognize tunes ever. A great pinball game machine came from this movie. One more thing, the passenger riding the doomed train is the director.

The thing I love most about the Addams Family is how happy and welcoming they are. They are just entirely comfortable with who they are, and they're entirely happy being the morbid weirdos living in a big spooky mansion. Often in Addams Family stuff, the comedy comes from the juxtaposition between them being entirely content morbid people while all the "normal" people around them are absolutely miserable being that way. I have no doubt that any Adams Family movie villain would be able to easily just integrate with the family if they were honest with their intentions, even the one in a different movie whose plan is to marry Fester and then kill him. They'd be down for that, trying to kill each other is just how they say they love each other. Fester wouldn't die, but they'd all have good fun laughing about it.

👻 There were a couple of Addams Family full-length animated features released in 2019 and 2021 respectively, but truth be told, they're both a bit mediocre. One film you should definitely schedule for next year's Halloween time is "Monster House" (2006). The story actually takes place on Halloween, and it's a fun movie.

Maybe it's my age and what I grew up with but, while I genuinely do enjoy this movie, I feel like you'd get a better feel - a better introduction - to the material by watching at least a few episodes of the 60s television series. The black and white Addams Family starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones is absolutely a classic. Having said that, Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia are always good; Thing no longer being confined to a box is a delight; and, of course, the character of Wednesday was leveled up by the inimitable Christina Ricci.
Wednesday, the series, is a helluva lot of fun with Jenna Ortega channeling Ricci...and then some! Once you've gotten familiar with the material, I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch.
