I had been noticing the mottled looking skin, and like you, I am using my heating pad any time I am resting. I didn’t really think much of the discoloration. My orthopedic dr even noticed it and, “oh, I can see you use a heating pad a lot.” So he knew I was having pain, but…he issued no warning. Didn’t give me any advice to stop. Didn’t inform me that it puts me at a higher risk of melanoma. None of it. (Out of all of my specialists, this one is my least favorite. He doesn’t take me seriously it seems.) I found out about the risks after he mentioned it, and I googled the condition erythema ab igne. Google taught me to slow my roll. My Dr didn’t.
This was an important message. I’m glad you put it out there.

I wish I'd seen this a few weeks ago. I suffer from chronic pain, big heating pad user. Recently had surgery and used the heating pad for weeks and now my back looks AWFUL & is so itchy I can't stand it. I even have a few blisters. I'm so scared it won't heal.
