    This was a good video. I enjoyed hearing what others think about the city I was born and live in. But there were a few things that you may have left out. Aside from the subway (which is a nightmare when you live here), walking, ferries and cabs, we also have MTA buses that coincide with our subways. They are good for traveling from west to east in Manhattan. And anyone coming here needs a Metrocard in order to ride our MTA transportation. Also, aside from all the attractions that you suggested, we have zoos in every borough, the Aquarium in Brooklyn which is located near our famous Coney Island, Ellis Island, Roosevelt Island, Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, a ton of historical tours, the list goes on and on. Our restaurants are expensive along with everything else but some are worth the money spent. Also, when traveling through Central Park the best time is during the day. And finally, we are not chilly 8 months of the year and only 2 months hot. It starts getting hot around here in May and these past few years it hasn't let up until the end of September. So it can be difficult to navigate our weather some times. All and all, this was a great video and there is a million things to do here in New York. And to everyone that watches this, don't just limit your visit to just Manhattan. The other boroughs have a ton to offer as well. The famous Yankees play in the Bronx, the Mets in Flushing Queens, the Knicks and Rangers in Manhattan and the Nets and Islanders in Brooklyn. So 1 visit just won't do :). Sorry for the long comment lol.

    Many people arrive in NYC without being in a New York State of mind, and in a fast paced environment like NY that’s a sure way of getting into a chaotic and expensive mess. Also, NYC is generally-speaking a very safe place, but with any large metropolitan city you still need to keep your wits about you and be aware of your surroundings; especially, if you plan on riding the metro late at night. The trick to an enjoyable vacation, regardless of where you happen to be visiting, is prior research and advanced planning. Great video.

    I've lived in New York all my life. I always like to check out videos like these to see how accurate they are. It's always interesting to see what non-New Yorkers have to say about my city. I must thank you for mentioning ahead of time that there's more to New York than Manhattan. Personally I hate the fact that everyone seems to think that Manhattan is the only fun place to go to when visiting New York. There are plenty of other beautiful places to see if you know where to look. I live in Queens & there's a lot of nice places to see here. And as far as Manhattan goes, I hate going there. Anyway, great video. I quite enjoyed it.

    Most important rule: Move or get out of the way. The sidewalks & stairs are like roads, do NOT block or stand in the middle, stand aside. Walk on the right side, walking is just like driving, same rules apply.
    For getting East/West in MH, just use cross-town buses or ones that go E/W.
    Anyway, good video, he's actually got good advice!
    Also: Atomic Bagel by Columbia University, go there in the morning when they're hot and fresh and DON"T toast them.

      If money's an issue, I've read that the Salisbury on 57th st is very reasonably priced, clean, friendly, and attentive, and is basically within walking distance of a lot of the Midtown attractions...It's not high end, but are you going to sit in your Hotel room, when there's so much to see, and do within walking distance?..I never stayed there. This is what I read from many reviews, about a year ago.

    • @polishpaul
      @polishpaul Před 6 lety

      Haha, kind of. Actually, what you want to do is LOOK in the direction you're walking, like when crossing a street or making a turn. This indicates to others where you're going and we all subconsciously read and interpret that intention correctly. Try it and you'll never bump into anyone crossing a busy street downtown. :-)

    • @andreashoppe1969
      @andreashoppe1969 Před 6 lety

      that's what I do in Vienna too actually. Not wanting to show off but I feel like I am walking faster than 90% of the people around me. Don't know why that is, I don't even feel like I am walking super fast, but you always want to read where people are going. Worst are those looking at their smartphones and stop at points like at the exit of escalators lol.
      Another question: Is it ok to wear a T-shirt and short trousers in NYC during summer? :D It seems to me that new yorkers have much greater feeling for fashion and styles but maybe that's just my opinion. What do you think?

    I'm from New York City and Chris you did a good job describing my hometown. I'll add a couple of things more. Other great places to visit in NYC (especially in the summer) are the best team in the history of American sports The NY Yankees (in the Bronx). Also in the Bronx is The Bronx Zoo which has a ton of animals to watch from a safe distance. Also, the iconic and most famous concert arena in the United States called Madison Square Garden where Led Zepellin shot their movie The Song Remains The Same and where many stars like Elvis, Sinatra, Ali and sports teams like the Knicks and Rangers call home. In Brooklyn, you can go see the Botanical Gardens, and Coney Island Amusement Park. In Queens, you can get tickets to the tennis U.S. Open which is one of the Tennis grand slam events of the world and you can go see the baseball team The Mets. When taking the ferry to Staten Island, the 5th borough for me to mention, you can see the Statue of Liberty like Chris said. The only other major attraction connected to Staten Island is The Verrazano Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in the U.S. and is the bridge seen in the iconic movie Saturday Night Fever. You can also go on Ghost Tours Vans and other major attractions like Macy's superstore on 34 street, the Jacob Javits Center, 30 Rock where tv shows like Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live and in the summer The Today Show has live free concerts at Rockefeller Center with the biggest singers on the planet giving free concerts. One note..... never, ever take a taxi or uber car during the day time anywhere in Manhattan. The traffic is horrific and getting worse. If you are in any of the other boroughs you can take a taxi most times without a traffic jam. To save money I recommend checking out Bed and Breakfast rooms in private houses in Queens, New York through Craigslist. I also recommend that you go to a super market and buy a lot of food when you arrive in New York and keep it in your hotel room to avoid expensive restaurants. Bring a hot plate stove to your hotel room to heat up your food. Cheers.

It is not my intention to offend anyone but after visiting Times Square for 30 minutes, don't waste any more time (unless you want to eat at chain restaurants or buy postcards). It really is a safe, fun city and the locals are NOT rude. Maybe a little more guarded than other parts of the world, but always willing to help.

    - If you're staying in Jersey, don't bust your butt getting to the city early. The commuter rush is mostly over by 9 on that end and any leftover "monthly-pass-only" parking spaces at NJ Transit stations open up to day tickets. I've had bad luck depending on the hotel shuttle and am within driving distance of the area so I have my car with me anyway.
    - That being said, don't bother driving in Manhattan. It's next-level stress and pricey as hell. There's a reason the locals stereotypically don't own cars.
    - The Times Square McDonald's *does* have free public restrooms, so it's useful for that.

      jmkjr33 hi, it was OK, I'd be happy to stay there again. It was on 29th, I think, not far from Penn station, it was pretty easy to get around anywhere from there. The room was surprisingly nice, not big but did the job and wasn't shabby. We thought noise might be an issue but it was ok, the couple next door were a bit noisy first thing in the mornings, (say no more), but it was mostly quiet. People had complained a bit about breakfast in Tripadvisor and it did get pretty busy but we just about managed to find a place to sit each day and have a reasonable breakfast, tea, coffee, juice, bagels etc. Like anywhere in NY it wasn't cheep but it was about the best deal we could find at the time. Do check out our vlog from NYC on my channel, it does have a couple of shots of the hotel in. Hope that helps.

    As a NYer this is actually pretty good. I'd throw in all the sports teams / venues, shopping (5th Ave and Soho), comedy clubs, more restaurants, and drinking lounges you can go to. Also I'd put up cost on dollars for a lot of the activities. NYC can add up pretty quickly. E.g. $15 cab ride, $50 ticket to Broadway show, $50 per person for restaurant meal, $250 a night on hotel, etc. 1 day can easily cost you about $250 a day on just doing normal day of sights.

    Some of this review seemed a little scary. I now live in New York and love it. Although New York is filled with people who are in a rush and busy, I find that this is one of the most hospitable world cities I know. If you are staying in a hotel see if they have a subway map they can give you. Alternatively, you can usually get one from the station master's booth in a subway station. You will find that very useful. There is a great deal to see in Manhattan. But there is also a great deal to see in the outer boroughs. You should make that effort. Get a travelers guide before coming and study that and pick out the things that look interesting. Eating is great fun in New York. There are many restaurants for each and every world culture here. New York is a great location for people who enjoy food.

    Take the bus crosstown. From river to river is 3 miles. Go up to the Bronx for the Yankees, Little Italy and the zoo; easy subway. TKTS has a box office down near South Street Seaport, shorter lines. Take a Circle Line boat tour at W42nd around the island; have a few beers and get some sea air while going really close to Statue and great skyline views night or day.

    Very accurate!!!! Manhattan is my second home. With me being military I get a great deal of perks including free entry into many places, $60 or so for a hotel, even a free Yankees game. So I luck out in that perspective. But one thing I disagree with is Katz’s. They’re good, don’t get me wrong, but the real deal NY deli, and better pastrami is at Sarge’s. I’d also recommend checking out “Classic Harbor Line” for a cruise on the Hudson. They have everything from small boats, sail boats, yachts, etc. They offer many types of cruises and sails.

    Brooklyn in the house. You got that right. NYC ppl don't talk to strangers. Only the south does that. From living in NYC , there are many transportation to get you where you want to go. Not in the ATL. Times Square is beautiful and with the Broadway 🎭 shows are the best. You can have a blast in NYC. The High Rise apartment are 💰💰💰. Plan on spending 💰 on Hotel in Manhattan. Food 🥘 of very good 😊. Yes, pizza 🍕 is the best. Oh, the best place to get a frank is from Nathan. One ☝️ more thing to remember is not to act like a Tourist. You will get robbed. That part has not changed. 👏🏼👏🏼🍕🥘🍟🍰

    excellent video chris, well done. i second the staten island ferry, simply jaw dropping views from it for $0. i have some of my best photos of nyc from that ferry. i would aslo add the 9/11 reflection pools memorial and underground museum is a must visit. its deeply moving yet respectful to those that perished. central park is a reason to go to new york on its own. in one full day we only covered half of it. its huge. its a welcome sanctuary in the new york hustle. nyc hotels are eye wateringly expensive. best policy is just swipe the card and think about it later. nyc is expensive, end of story. new york pizza is next level, up there with italy and other heavy hitters, i can think of a few aussies too who are doing comparable nyc pizza in melbourne and sydney. coffee is terrible though in nyc, folks be warned. if you prefer proper espresso / latte etc, and melbourne quality (not starbucks rubbish), you can find that in nyc but you have to go searching for it. bluestone lane is very good, and dotted throughout nyc. run by a fellow aussie too : ). lastly, transportation and safety, we found uber to be amazing in nyc. otherwise walking everywhere was no problem, perfectly safe.

      If you take the Staten Island ferry in the Winter make sure to close the door behind you if you go outside on the ferry. I speak for all commuters who have to take a boat on the daily that there is nothing more annoying than tourist who leave the door open and let all the cold air in.
      Also make sure you know what side the Statue of Liberty is on before getting on the Ferry. I've seen many tourist miss the Statue completely cause they stood on the wrong side.

    You pretty much nailed it....Except, Newark is pronounced Nork - It doesn't rain a lot - DON'T drive - You can walk East to West easily. Central Park is referred to as The Park and on the east end it is only 2.5 miles wide and .5 mile towards the middle. The Bronx is Up (north), The Battery is Down (south) Streets are numbered getting higher when you're headed north, lower south. Blocks are the streets between intersections. Numbered blocks North to South are shorter than Avenues which run East/West. PLEASE don't ride a bike if you're not used to city bicycling. SOHO is located South of Houston pronounced HOUSETIN this isn't Texas. Manhattan is referred to as "the City" the boros by their names and last and most important PLEASE be respectful when visiting the World Trade Center. Remember you are visiting our home. We love it, don't litter.
