    I matched to a very nice program this year and I can confirm that these tips and advices are very high yield for every interview! My only advice, in addition to what was stated here, would be to avoid overacting to appear as someone you are not. If the interviewer is interested in something that you are pretending to be, then it’s better to reconsider if you would really be happy at that program. I had 9 interviews. Only ranked my top 3 programs. Trust me, the worst thing that can happen is matching to a program you didn’t like!

      Respectfully, I think the worst thing that can happen is not matching at all haha

    It would bother me as a candidate to see your messy desk!
    Also, would you recommend leaving my own money on the floor to see if the interviewer gives it back?

    Fabulous video. You make me laugh so much and Thank you for sharing your views!!! I need your help with this question, which may sound dumb. Will be soon applying for residency in IM (GME). Was lucky to have opportunities for substantial research in digestive diseases/cancer and radiation oncology in med school. I am drawn towards GI as my ultimate career goal. Is it ok to share my ultimate goal during IM residency interview. Since lot of schools probably trains majority of IMs to meet the needs in primary care, urgent care, hospital medicine and so forth. Will I be impacting my chance for IM if I share upfront my underlying intention to do IM is to get into GI?

    Dr. Fischer, can you please tell me where did you find that statistic about going on 4 interviews or so gives you about a 90% chance of matching? Is that for AMGs, IMGs, or both? I'm just curious.

    • @eric204
      @eric204 Před 6 lety +6

      that stat is bullshit, my friend was a DO and got 5 ACGME surgery interviews and didn't match.

      There is a report that is released every year by the US called the NRMP that goes into very very specific detail about every statistic that an AMG, IMG with a foreign passport and American passport holding IMG would want to know.
      There has been a consistent record of half of all IMG's (USA passport holding and non) who match as a whole. So it becomes a coin toss for IMG's. Personally based on this along with the fact that many applicants don't take the time to actually read up and research how to really set up their application the way that the USA residency programs prefer it, Dr. Fischer's matching statistic makes sense because there are TONS of hospitals across the country to apply to with different score/extracurricular requirements, and getting 4 interviews is not easy. Those who are ill prepared get knocked out, low scores knock you out, bad interviews, only choosing programs that are far beyond your reach, etc
      So after all those factors, the rest of the applicants that are left who are well prepared will get called in for several interviews which will increase their chances because they are a strong candidate as a whole
      AMG's naturally have a significantly easier time matching but a well prepared IMG who prepares themselves according to what US programs want will definitely have a good shot. I've worked with many IMG's during medical school and those who got over 3 interviews all matched into a program :)
      I'm no expert of course, but this has been my understanding and experience. Hope it helps

      When I went through the match 7 years ago, if you have 8-9 interviews your chance is about 80%. I applied to both FM and IM and ended up prematch at the first interview which was the bottom of my list (I wanted to knock that one out first). So score is everything, if you have anything above 230 and u want either FM or IM, it’s possible with 4 interviews. Hope this helps.

    • @megrocks3026
      @megrocks3026 Před 3 lety

      The mere fact that youre getting an interview means you were interesting enough for a pd to want to get to know you. So if you're getting interviews but dont match, its your personality, you're answering questions wrong, etc. You're doing something wrong at the interview and you should figure that out.
