Everyone is so opinionated on here. "Dude, your guitar wasn't intonated properly", "that's not how you play 'Highway to Hell', just sayin'"... Seriously, shut up. It sounds fine. Go intonate your own damn guitars and feel free to stop anyone who is playing a riff (which sounds just fine) differently than you that they're wrong. See how many people you win over with that.
I just got to say it, Alex is one bad mamajama! Regardless of the guitar, he knows who his way around it incredibly well! These Chicago Music Exchange demo's are really well done, they get guitar players that really know how to play and beyond that they know how to demo a both guitars and the amplifiers which is a rare combination. This is the channel I go to, when I'm interested in a specific amp and lo and behold, here they are with this wonderful guitar player putting my next favorite him through the paces! I could not ask for more and I thank you so much, during these covid-19 days, for not only posting and playing but keeping our interest in distracting from the tragedies out there!
I've played on and have heard a friend's Dr. Z Maz 18 NR Jr head and Z 1x12 cab on a weekly basis. For anyone saying it's overprice, different courses for different horses. I've yet to hear anything more versatile and toneful in that price range for the target audience and market (intermediate to pro players, small to large (miked up) stages, studio work, country, blues, rock, clean platform ambient pedalboard stuff).
Your right, compared to other HW amps they are one of the lowest priced amps out there. Tell those people to look at Carr, and the upper line of Bad Cat & Matchless.
I love my Dr. Z amps, some of the best sounding and inspiring amps I've played. I have a Maz 18 JRNR 2x12 combo and Carmen Ghia Head and have had others and they are all loud, full of character, and blow everyone away who hears them... don't let a video make a decision for you, Go Play Them!
@@technicoloursound2115 Good question. Never thought about it this way. And I've never ran them side-by-side. When I use the original Maz 18 at rehearsal it always inspires me, but then when I use the Maz 18 MKii at gigs or home I'm reminded what a beast it is. The biggest difference is that with the original version I need to use a pedal (I use the Timmy Pedal) to get crunchy/more driven tones at volumes that won't crumble the earth , but with the Mk ii I don't need any pedals because its built into the amp. For me it has more than enough drive/gain -- more than I use with blues, funk, R&B/Soul, rock, pop, and maybe a little country. They are both great amps!
@@technicoloursound2115 Yeah the Timmy is great. I tried a bunch of different pedals before that and finally found the one in the Timmy. Also, on another note you should think about changing the tubes if you don't know how old they are as that can play a part in the tone. Some say with that amp they should be changed like every year. I must be lucky because I've had mine for about 9 years and never changed the tubes...and it was used when I bought it from the original owner, so I think it has the original tubes in it! But it still sounds great so I'm not in a hurry to change them (and because its just my rehearsal amp so no big deal).
I got mine on a freak ebay deal. If you are very, very vigilant, you can find affordable deals pop up on most of the Dr. Z models. Only way I managed to score one
The real magic of the Z amps is in the way they take pedals like they're just another part of the circuit. Literally every half decent pedal I own sounds good through one.
My dad was so mad when I got my android to sound like his expensive set up and mine's all portable. I have a 6.5 volt power amplifier on the output with the droid taped to the back of the axe it's pretty sweet.
kommi1974 Maybe so, but after playing in a band with my friend who uses a head/cab version, I can tell you that his tone smokes my chinese made Vox AC15 and I love the flexibility more than an older UK Vox. Any guitarist who actually NEEDS what the amp offers would think it was a very reasonable buy, and it's easy to find a supplier if you ever need a backup.
I too, have a Chinese Vox, but a reasonably versatile AC30 (CC series). I'd be more than happy with most of the Dr. Z line. Everything just sounds SO GOOD. xD
Not denying that these amps don't have tone, but I think I'd much rather prefer the sound of a dimed Deluxe or Princeton. Really appreciate what Dr. Z has goin on here. I love that spacey, squishy fender reverb soaked in dirt
At first I was like, um....why are we playing highway to hell with single coils, but then i see he’s doing an A/B with the les paul so its all good now Haha
You can't play anything from AC/DC without getting copyright issues... just speak to Rick Beato. So you modify the riff to get it into the ball park without upsetting the record company....
+Pete Clarke a brief query on any forum will turn up myriads of experienced individuals who know that a vintage style ashtray bridge with the typical 3-saddle arrangement will not intonate properly. I didn't say anything about tuning. Intonation will show itself as you work your way up the fretboard. Some have learned to live with this, some consider it an indispensable part of the tele vibe, others have come up with solutions, which is why the modern bridge exists, along with a number of takes on compensated brass saddles for folks who like that aspect of telecasters but want consistent intonation.
People who post "overpriced" on gear related demos are so tiring. Perhaps more so than people who post their view number. Baseless claims, no matter the subject, are beyond annoying, and quite frankly unnecessary
There are things that are worth their price, you just wish it were cheaper. I have several pieces of gear that I wouldn't let go for 2 or 4 times my cost. A couple nothing short of a kings ransom.
ridiculously over priced. how is it that a bassman or a super reverb are $500-600 less? makes no sense. and if I wanted to spend 2 grand on a 1x12 amp, i'd buy a hand wired Eric Clapton Tremulux
Are you talking about vintage Fender Amps or reissues? Some of the vintage amps are cheaper because a lot of them are actually shit. And need $1000 worth of extinct parts in order to work like they did. Sometimes older amps have an insane wattage and amount of tubes that nobody wants to have the burden of tending too. If you are talking about PCB Mexican reissues of vintage fender amps and comparing them to handmade boutique amps, you shouldn’t do that. I will honestly say that Dr.Z amps are all extremely well made and definitely worth the price just in terms of labour and materials. But the resale value is horrible. You could buy a Carmen Ghia head in Canada for $900 which is $500 USD.
I like the editing where you switched guitars mid-riff. That was actually helpful to hear the huge tonal difference between the guitars.
Everyone is so opinionated on here. "Dude, your guitar wasn't intonated properly", "that's not how you play 'Highway to Hell', just sayin'"...

Great rendition of that Wilco solo!
thanks. I was curious as to how a dr z amp sounded but now I know how to play karma police :)
Thanks for the demo-great playing man.
best demo of this amp out there
You guys pick the best songs to demo. Everytime. True professionals over there.
Very helpful listening to the different guitars on similar settings. Thanks for a great demo! Saving up...
Really dig the Nels Cline solo.

Awesome! Cool that you are using solidbody and hollow-body guitars for review!
Love what he does at 1:25
He's enjoying himself. You can tell.
Maz 18 is my desert island amp.
Nice bit of Karma Police! Gr8 sounding amp!

Ha! Pickup Man there in the beginning. Nice riffing!
either way! great solo
It's one of my favorite too...scratch that. It is my favorite amp -- both the original version and the Mk II (which is a beast!)
so you like both equally? Cuase I just traded an amp for a old Maz 18 and then I found about the new ones and I hope not missing out on too much

+1 for Radiohead
Does the cap come with the amp?
Karma police to end, lovely!

best youtube videos
Tune it
I was annoyed by the fact that you were playing AC/DC at the start. But you totally made it up to me when you played Karma Police :D
Someones a Music Snob hahahah Amp sounds great playing anything really...

I wish reviewers would tell us this, so we don't have to guess by staring the things down lol
Shure KSM44 and Shure SM57
Doe Dr. Z make tuners? You should look into it.

do they make any higher gain amps.
put a pedal in front. Even marshall users do it.

what's the riff from at 1:24?

but the vox ac 15 leaves it for dead from what ive heard
