Raiders, traders and settlers in late Iron Age and early medieval Ireland and Britain
Over the past 25 years dedicated and innovative research projects in Ireland, the UK and Europe have allowed us to shed new light on this dynamic period in Irish history. The application of increasingly refined scientific methods, wider theoretical analysis and more robust dating methods has allowed us to revisit many sites and finds and to challenge previous assumptions around the concept of historical or political boundaries that might have restricted or limited the movement of people within and between Ireland and her mostly Roman-ish neighbours at this time.
Using examples and studies from sites around Ireland and offering parallels from elsewhere, I will explore recent archaeological approaches to the people, things and places that include likely migrants but that are an intrinsic part of Ireland’s early history.
Jacqueline Cahill Wilson Ph.D, MIAI, FSA is former Project Director of the Discovery Programme’s Late Iron Age and Roman Ireland Project (2011-15). She has held research fellowships at the University of Bristol and Leicester University, and was recently appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Royal Agricultural University. She is a member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists Ireland and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. She is currently Vice-Chair of the Historical Studies Committee of the Royal Irish Academy.
