    Max glide speed is based on the best L/D ratio and gives you the best distance for the altitude you have. By flying slightly slower, it is possible to operate on an even lower part of the power required curve, but this yield less glide distance while maintaining slightly more time aloft. Too slow and you waste distance and time as sink rate will increase on the backside of the curve. If your goal is distance or range, fly the glide speed. This approximates the angle of attack for best lift/drag.

    you can glide at lower speeds and at lower descent rates.
    try it in a flight simulator.
