Bro best video iv ever see. Straight to the point. No bull, hell ya brother.
WOW there's a LOT of work for this project! Not something I could do by myself that's for sure! Ty for making this video series.
I did the same project last year. I remodeled the entire bathroom. Took me a while to do the drain and plumbing which I hate to do. I also put in new toilet, new sink, new bigger quiet exhaust fan. I did all the wall and floor tiling. I converted light from wall to ceiling recessed LED light. Saved alot of money by doing everything myself except for hiring a contractor to install slide shower door. Everything turned out great.
Awesome! Think of all the money you saved doing it by yourself.
Thanks for watching.
We have something in common here Bob.
I knew your community this is a great idea thank you for sharing, look forward to hearing from you Ken
@ Minute 01:43 “.....Ãhh-SKI-Lāting saw” haha LOVE it!
Seriously though, all jokes aside, excellent ‘how to’ video on this job, on par with ‘Ask this old house’ too! I’m looking to take my one bathtub out of my upstairs bathroom and convert it to a walk-in shower stall. While I’m at it, I might as well put tile in instead of using the current laminate vinyl floor, as heated floor system, upgrade my single sink and full size mirror to a two-sink with under mount sinks. Love the videos, keep it up, learned a lot sir!
I appreciate these videos!
You’ve made my remodel much easier!
Thank you!!
-Chris
Awesome! check out the new series I just started where I take a 1/2 bathroom and make it a full bathroom. czcams.com/video/GhmmlsNeLrY/video.html Thanks for watching.
Just found your channel. The hubby and I are about to remodel my bathroom. I want to convert my tub to walk in shower and this came in handy. We already gut the bathroom. We just left the toilet and tub in coz I wasn’t sure if I wanted a tub or walk-in. Now seeing this I do want a walk in. So I’m watching and re watching this. I’m soaking in everything I can. The floor tile is actually what I wanted. I like your shower floor tile. But I wanted bigger tile for the walls. Thank you. I sub so I can come back to keep learning.
Glad to watching your video from 1 to 9 keep rewatching many time everything you did my husband and I we plan to upgrade our bathtub shower to walk-in shower just exactly what your video did thank you for sharing experience great work all through 👍😊 .
Beginning my bathroom remodel this week and will be following this video step by step.
Thanks bro.
Now I know how to start my bathroom makeover.
Saving some money....
Hi Bob, Great video. I was hoping you could weigh in on an odd setup: the actual flooring that was under our old tub is sloped already (luckily towards the drain). I'm not sure if it's better to shim it so the new floor is level and then use a pre-pitch kit to give it a proper pre-slope, or just go with the floor being pitched and try to mortar it by eye so it slopes approximately what it should before the liner goes on top? Thanks - any advice would be helpful!
I would recommend starting with a level floor. I always feel that it is better to start with a good base so you are building on a solid foundation. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.
If you use the channel lock pliers in a manner that gets the job done, it is fine. Even if some perpetually cranky people don't agree.
He made this look so easy... Id probably get half way thru this and have already managed to set the house on fire 🔥
Will definitely be using this video for my DIY! Question, how do you remove the over flow,it doesn’t show that, or do you recommend another video I can watch? The tub has already been removed but I’m stuck on what to do next. Thank you.
Great Videos Bob!
My house is on a cement foundation. In this instance would I skip the cement board floor?
Yes, but you may want to check for dips and crowns. In that case use a floor leveler. Thanks for watching.
great job! fyi- this is part 1 of 9 for those watching. people want quick results these days. 3-5minute videos are nice. I playback at 2x speed. LOL
That's why I made it a nine part series so that each video was shorter. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the informative how to video. I’m about to tackle this in my bathroom, but have never done this before but feel more confident that I can do it now. I have a slab instead of a conventional foundation. Would you recommend anything different to do for a slab foundation? Is the concrete subfloor backer board still necessary or just used if the concrete floor is uneven? Thanks
I would skip the backer board for the floor if it is concrete other than that all is the same. Thanks for watching.
I found your video very informative and helpful. How would something like this work with a sunken bathtub or a floor bathtub?
You may have to rebuild part of the floor where the sunken tub is but after that it should be the same. Hope this helps.
Thanks for watching.
Hi, great video. I was wondering since you did this conversion about 5 years ago, have you had any problems with the drainage by not being changed from 1-1/2" to 2" per code?
Hi great videos, would you mind share all the products you used for the renovation? Thanks in advance
Sorry, It would be near impossible to share all the product that were used in the making of this video. With the many trips to hardware store, time since the making of the video, and the variances in jobs, it would be too difficult and add too much time to the video. Thanks for watching.
How much will i charge labor for converting tub to walking shower on this time (virginia)?
a better idea is to extend the shower to the edge. When I removed mine in the mater bathroom it had a tub like that and it looks like i doubled the size by removing the plastic tub that took up 2-3 inches of space then extending it it to the edge was icing on the cake to make it bigger.
I have done some like what you described and I would prefer to do it that way but this one was only a direct switch out. Thanks for watching.
CONVERT: 1. to change (something) into a different form or properties; transmute; transform.
Warning watch out when you take that sawzaw and cut through the fiberglass you might have electrical lines or gas lines in the wall! I did a couple of these lately and yes I had a gas line and electrical lines I had to be careful of the depth of the blade. I angled the sawzaw so my blade barely broke the surface and was fine.
I don't own a sawzall but i'll probably be purchasing a multi-tool, wondering if i can saw through the tub liner with that?
Watched all 9 parts. What is the time frame & cost for converting a bath/shower to a shower? What were the cost of materials (roughly) and even though you did this yourself, do you have an estimate for what it may cost to have a professional do this?
We just bought a house and I really want to do this. My father in law is good with construction and built his house, so I’m sure he will understand this better than I could. While I’m sure I could do it in theory I feel like there is too much room for error and I don’t want to end up with a flooded bathroom and water damage.
This job took about 2 weeks if I remember correctly, as for the material and cost of labor it will vary from job to job, area to area, person to person. Thanks for watching.
Hi Bob, do you have a list of the items needed to complete this project? I’m thinking specifically the parts for the drain, the slope kit, etc. I am undertaking a bathroom in my house and want to make sure that I am fully prepared with all the materials I need
No, I don’t have a list. The materials vary so much from job to job that it really would be a mostly useless list.
Thanks for watching.
Hi, is that possible to get a list of all materials and tools needed ? Really appreciated. Thanks.
Sorry, It would be near impossible to share all the product that were used in the making of this video. With the many trips to hardware store, time since the making of the video, and the variances in jobs, it would be too difficult and add too much time to the video. Thanks for watching.
This series looks great and I’m wondering how much this entire project costed? This doesn’t seem cheap.
It's like the best, duh!
Hi Bob, towards the end you didn't show how you converted the drain from a tub drain to a shower drain (which is further out). In part 2, it's already done. What exactly did you do? I can see PVC piping in Part 2 but not sure what you did.
Actually all I did in video 1 was cut the drain pipe off, Sorry I should have shown that I guess. In video 2 I needed to Build up the floor around the drain to support the mortar bed. One word of advice is to make sure that you have a vent so that your drain works correctly. This drain had a vent that you can see on the faucet wall just to the right of the drain at :08 in video 2. I hope this explains what has happened and answers your questions. Thanks for watching.
I have a similar situation. I have a vent to the right exactly like this. How did you change it? I cannot simply change it since my drain pipe is placed close to the subfloor. So my 45 bent will have to start from top of the drain and it will come out. Need some advice.
Did you turn off the water?
i have a concrete slab-what concrete do i use to fill in “void” around shower drain trap?
Start with sandmix if the void is smaller than 2". Anything larger regular concrete mix will work. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Video is alittle old but hopefully you see it. How do you install the liner if there was a seat? Thank you.
Installing a seat presents a little more difficulty. The liner should be placed over the seat like a shingle on a roof so that water runs down it flows over. The use of a waterproofing crack isolation membrane will also add another layer of waterproofing. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.
How conveniently the tub came apart. Must have been a recent install
It really wasn't that old at all, so I figured that helped some. Thanks for watching.
Hi, How to Bob. I had my whole shell removed before, and put in a new shower shell.
We just bought a new house and I am unable to step over the side of the tub to get in and take a shower. (I cannot take a bath.)
I'm just wondering if I can cut out most of the side of the tub and what could I then use to cover the cut parts?
I need to save time and money. Thanks!
I know there is a kit that will allow you to cut a section out of the side of the tub and it comes with an insert that covers the cut out part. You may be able to find it if you search on the Internet. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.
Bob, I'm trying to remodel my upstairs shower. I'm trying to see if the mortar is not too heavy for the floors' wood. I hope you can help me out.
Actually, a pretty handy video series. No verbose narration - plain and simple.
Although it might have been more fun to see him remove a built-in cast iron tub (sledgehammer time!).
As for his mispronouncing "osskilating" - let's hear you say February ten times real fast.
Besides, I've got a chim-blee on my house, and when I need a book I go to the lie-barry.
Thanks for watching, For your viewing pleasure: czcams.com/video/YfbLMbl3Vog/video.html
Great video. Can you provide a materials list.
@@funbro1 Understood. Was mainly interested in the pre pitch and membrane. Found it all online. Your video is almost an exact match to what I want to do. Thanks!!!
Why not notch the front of the tub to walk in height and put a new tub liner over everything?
I have seen kits that will do just that. Customer wanted the whole area re-done. Thanks for watching
How much does something like this cost ? I am in southern california. Thanks!
Why did you have to move the drain? Code or preference? I have a concrete slab so I’m a little hesitant to cut into it.
The drain was moved to center it in the shower, no other real reason. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
So what happens to the drain overflow PVC pipe? How is that changed with a walk-in. Is the pipe completely removed?
nice, but your operating your adjustable plyers aka channel locks backwards. the small jaw goes in the direction your turning
I did that just for you. Hope you got something out of the videos. Thanks for watching
my shower tub is cheap fiber glass with walls I want to remove and install walk in shower measure bathroom wall to wall 58 inch but the shower pan I want to buy is 60 inch you think will fit because I cant find 58 inch walking shower pan please advise ?
Take a measurement from the wall above the shower it should be about 59 inches. That will be a half inch on each side for drywall. If that is the case you should be good to go.
Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
Can I just cut the tub drain off? I mean the overflow? And just put a regular drain?
I’m not sure what you are asking? You have to do away with the overflow and retrofit a shower drain where the tub drain was. Tub drains and shower drains are different. Hope this helps.
Thanks for watching.
Im looking to replace my tub to a standing shower. BUt what do i do to replace the drain?
It is a different drain set up so you will need to get a shower drain and install it. Thanks for watching.
Did I miss the part the where he says to turn the water off before removing tub fixtures?
Could you give me a list of all I’ll need for the conversion?
For what size room, with what layout, and what type of materials? Basically it would be very time consuming and difficult rot even try to come up with a list at this point.
Sorry.
Thanks for watching.
Will such a conversion change your bathroom from a full bath to a 3/4 bath and affect your home value?
I would not recommend it unless there is another tub in the house. Some people would look at this as a negative, but then some would look at just the tub as a negative. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching
Realtor just told me that many new home builders are not doing master bathroom tubs now, just large walk-in showers. As long as there is a tub in a 2nd bath it’s no longer considered a detriment to home value...
How long from when you start this project until you can use the new shower?
Each part of this video was meant to represent about 1 day worth of work. Thanks for watching.
You dont happen to have a basic material list for a project like this do you?
How much does a conversion like this cost, roughly?
Anywhere up to $10,000 and beyond depending on the scope of the project. Each one will be different. Thanks for watching
REPLACE:to take the place of something, or to put something or someone in the place of something else.
“Oskalating”.... this haunts me
Ugh I read your comment BEFORE hearing it... finger nails, say hello to chalk board
Deviant4Life you could’ve suffered in silence... yet you drag me back here 2 years later to relive this horror.. thank you
Do you have before and after pictures of this bathroom?
@@funbro1 could you post them or send them to me at mdevans1975@gmail.com? I would like compare the before and after. Thank you
Not hating just a tip for some of the others pliers/channel locks are directional your pinched and busted fingers will thank you
You should watch my video on how to use pliers/channel locks. Thanks for watching.
I Love It LMAO followed directions and ended up with a mail-ordered bride ... Aint that some SHIT lol ill be awaiting a channel locks and pliers how to does and donts of busting a nut in the near future ... :}
Why do that you can take bottom tub out and put up tile and shower pan fit over drain put shower drain piece back in .... You don't need to demolish everything out ...
My wife is going to be really surprised when she comes home and half the bathroom is ripped apart.
looks like a weeks worth of work or 3 days if you know what you are doing
Step 1 remove tub. Step 2 install shower
Darn, you mean I could have cut this series down to 2 videos? LOL Thanks for watching.
The teacher should have spent few seconds showing the various mortar and fiberglass materials he mentioned.
He assumed all video watchers were experienced.
No assumptions here. This was meant to be a guid not an all inclusive video. If it were an all inclusive it would have been 10 times longer with twice as many parts.
Thanks for watching.
Supersized that you could remove the tub drain so easily using the channel-locks backwards...
“Supersized” are you always thinking of food when watching CZcams videos?
Thanks for watching.
Hey bob could u please message me or email me a list of material that I would need to do this job
Did you turn off water?
At some points I had to. When adding the new faucet for sure.
Thanks for watching.
You are using your channel locks backwards
Carol Well being that in my craft, I use this tool properly every day. So when you have someone doing a how to video, showing the tools used improperly...kinda defeats the purpose. The teeth on them are designed to only bite in one direction, using them backwards allows them to slide on what you are gripping. This creates gouges and scratches on whatever you are using them on. If you wanna use them wrong and do half assed work...feel free. While at it, use the claw of the hammer to pound nails in, it works really well
This isn't a conversion it's a replacement / remodel
Sure it is, didn’t the area where the tub used to be get converted into where a shower is now? I guess to your point this could be considered a partial remodel considering not everything was remodeled but then what to name the video? I guess I could have named it “partial bathroom remodel including replacing a tub with a shower.” Or I could have named it” taking a tub out and replacing it with a shower and re-doing the floor”. To my point I think I will leave the title to the way it is. Thanks for watching
Myles M That's exactly what I thought as soon as the video started. It's NOT a conversion, it's a replacement. The title should be...How to replace a tub/shower with a walk-in shower.
conversion- the process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another.
replacement- the action or process of replacing someone or something.
I can't tell if funbro1 is being a smartass in his reply to you but my thought is, funbro1 your title infers that the tub was converted not the area of the tub. Your channel is about teaching people. You had to learn your trade before you could teach it so never stop learning. Myles M is correct in his comment to you. So, always be willing to learn. No one knows everything.
SandiRose You are correct when you say never stop learning. I am constantly trying to lean new techniques, new products, better ways to do things, and even faster ways to do things. While learning things I have also learned that people get caught up in semantics all too often. As stated in my first reply the "area" that was once a tub was converted to an "area" that is now a shower only.
I am curious what would you suggest the title be? Anyway, I hope the video was entertaining/educational to you. Thanks for watching.
@@funbro1 Hey funbro1. LOL So you're saying I got caught up in the semantics? Like I said in my previous comment, The title should be 'How to replace a tub/shower with a walk-in shower.' And like I said in my previous comment, I can't tell if you're being a smartass. LOL I'm subscribing. GN funbro1. Also, you really should re-read my previous comment... it explains the difference between a conversion and a replacement! Typical male! LOL
That's funny... typical male! I know when to argue a point and when not to argue a point and that one I will leave alone. LOL.
I do like the title that you came up with and look for it to change...maybe.
Question: did the area that was once a tub get converted to an area that is now a shower?
Thanks for subscribing, I truly hope there is something on this channel that you can use if nothing else just for entertainment.
Straight to the point! I love these types of videos. No frills. Right on!
Thanks for watching.
