Photoshop Elements Colorize Photo tool. You can use the New Photoshop Elements 2020 Colorize Photo tool to add color to a black and white image automatically. Creating a new layer with the layer mask to color a section of a photo worked beautifully. I used the technique on 2 black & white photos. I have PSE 14.Thanks George.

I have had to watch this video many many times. Layers and masks sound so easy; but between hearing it and doing it; for me is a challenge. Sometimes the software simply does not function the way it should. Most of the time layers, Masks, hierarchy etc., having the right tool in the right area makes it even more complicate. In anywise, This is really a great instruction; I look forward to the day I can grasp it. But thanks

Interesting. Looks somewhat more straightforward than the Photoshop tutorial you posted back in 2015, thanks to the calorise tool. I have quite a lot of old b&w photos; it would be interesting to see what would happen if I applied this technique!
You're right Peter, using the Colorize Photo tool really saves time over colorizing the whole picture. I also eliminated several layers that I used in my previous video, the colorize photo helps make that possible.

Hi, the button for the Layers panel is in the bottom right of the window. All panels, even the Layers panel are accessible from the Window menu
Thanks George! Love this tool. How does the Colorize photo tool know what colors to chose, are they just random colors? or when processing the colorization from black and white to color is there an option to change the color scheme ?
Hi Brian, there isn't any option to choose a color scheme. What I think Adobe has done is to input info from millions of photos into the AI database. When it looks at the photo it refers to that database and uses that as a reference. Does a pretty good job. Then once the colors are selected it gives a warm and a cool version of that with a high and low saturation choice on each version.

I have an earlier version of PSE. Can colorizing be done in PSE 13? Also, if I upgrade to PSE 2022 will I have to reload all my 3rd party plugins? Will I need to unistall PSE 13 first or does PSE 2022 install over it without having to uninstall 13? Thanks for your help!
Sure, you can colorize a photo with PSE 13, it just takes a little more work. Here is my video about that czcams.com/video/_wpULI8unS4/video.html. On upgrading, PSE 2020 will be installed separately from other versions. And you will have to reinstall any plugins into the PSE 2020 version.

Hi there - just got 2020 and playing with this function.
Everything was going fine until I hit the droplet tool after making the area selections I want to retouch. (About 4:08 in your video). That greys out the upper section as expected BUT leaves the color palette area also grey so I'm unable to select either a colour or the eye dropper tool.
Suggestions?
Sorted - I hadn't properly reselected the area to sort. :P

OK - now a sensible question... :P
I've been working on some old negatives of my grandfather's that I found when sorting the attic recently.
Scanning and converting to positive images has been no problem, and for some of them the colorization has been good - and I've learned a few morsels along the way as well. eg adjusting the lighting and/or shadows/contrast etc on the b/w image before colouring can make a big difference. However, some of the b/w shots just don't seem to take the enhancement well at all - what I seem to get is more of a sepia effect on the top two 'auto' selections and a bluer version of that in the bottom two - even when the pic seems to have nice clarity as a b/w.
Any suggestions on how to deal with that sort of thing?

I tried this method and it hardly colourised anything to begin with, and manual only gave me a few colours to choose from. Could not use eye dropper as there was no colour to select ! Guessing have to do the long winded brush tool and layers option
Hi Simon, the colorize tool is neat, when it works. But it doesn't always work or give good results. I usually prefer to do things the long way where I have complete control. Am using Elements 2021. Colorize Photo gives error message 'Couldn't find relevant files to launch the feature.' Always does this no matter the size of the B&W photo or which one I use. RGB format is set. I did everything on the Adobe Help site and nothing changed. The web has nothing helpful. I am using the latest build, 20210304. Any ideas except to reinstall?
First thing to check, make sure your file is opened locally from your hard drive and not from a network. Then if that isn't it you can try resetting PSE. Close down the PSE Editor, then restart it, then while it is loading hold down the ctrl+shift+alt keys together. You will get a popup window asking if you want to reset Elements. That will clear out any customizations which sometimes cause problems. Then try the photo again. If it still doesn't work there I would then uninstall and reinstall the program.
One more idea, make sure you aren't using Photoshop Elements over a network, it should be installed on your local C drive
@@HTGGeorge I uninstalled and reinstalled but still no Colorization. I downloaded and ran AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool.exe then reinstalled again. Now Colorization works!
The Tool must be run as Administrator.
@@nothingworksright9589 Then switch to Administrator, clean up the program and switch back to user. All it does is reset the settings back to their defaults for the program, it doesn't touch anything else.
