This song definitely grew up on me. The slow and mundane beginning was a not so welcoming introduction to what happens after 1:19 - which is beautiful and hauntingly delecate and comforting. As many interpretations have been written in the comment section, Coma may not be a literal state of the person. Maybe that's why the beginning was uneasy to go through for me..
I’ve always interpreted this song as the feeling of dissociation after rape/assault. No longer being able to recognize the things that were once comfortable parts of your life.
Yeah. Very well described. My first association with the "house" was a persons body in which the person doesn't feel safe anymore after somebody has used it. I'm not sure about the "iris of the body", though. It might be a metaphor for personal borders. The safe space surrounding us like an iris which has been destroyed? I'm wondering if anybody can write such lyrics without having been going through this...
Yes, that's what's I thought when I first heard this song. Somehow I figured that all listeners would have thought the same, but after seeing the comments here, I realize I was wrong.
He put her in To get out To get out He kissed her skin To get off To get off Off You can wake up now, momma From your protective coma When you wake up You wake up You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house Will you recognize the Iris of the body? Iris of the body? You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house Will you recognize the Iris of the body? Iris of the body? You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house Will you recognize the Iris of the body? Iris of the body? You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house You won't recognize your house
This track is so disappointing. The little section at 1:20 sounds just beautiful and sounds like it's building to something very different than what it actually does. Not that I don't like the song it actually builds into, it's great, I just wish I wasn't so misled.
Interesting, I feel the opposite. The latter half was a welcomed surprise. The melody is beautiful, and the recording is so layered and evolving. It’s remarkable that the band appeals to two completely different tastes in one song.
Jesus Christ. This is madly moving. Mystifying in a harrowing type of way.
So dark and moving. Stopped me in my tracks when I heard it on the radio.

This is the only way I hear the song now

You say all that like it's objectively true. Sure, the rest of the song isn't like that section, but can't you see how moving the rest of the song is?
fuck off
They hated him because he told the truth. The latter part of this track is repetitive and obnoxious.
