  • In this educational video Dr O'Donovan explains 9 reasons why your big toe might hurt.
    1. Gout - which is a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid crystals in the toe joint. Symptoms can include sudden, severe pain in the big toe, redness, swelling, and warmth.
    2. Bunions, which are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of the big toe and they look like this. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and redness around the big toe joint, and the toe may lean toward the other toes. Bunions can be caused by wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes, genetics, arthritis, or foot stress.
    3. An ingrown toenail, which occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin. Symptoms of an ingrown toenail can include pain, redness, swelling, and infection at the side of the toenail.
    4. Arthritis that can affect the big toe, which is inflammation of the joint causing pain and stiffness.
    5. Injury or sprain of the big toe joint. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and limited joint movement, often due to pushing off the big toe forcefully, commonly in sports. Treatment typically involves rest, ice, compression, elevation and anti-inflammatory medications.
    6. Hallux rigidus, which is a type of arthritis at the base of the big toe causing stiffness. Symptoms can include pain and stiffness in the big toe, and difficulty walking or bending the toe.
    7. Sesamoiditis, which is inflammation or fracture of the sesamoid bones under the big toe joint. Symptoms can include pain under the big toe, especially when walking or putting pressure on the toe.
    8. Injury or trauma, which refers to any direct injury to the toe, such as stubbing it or dropping something heavy on it.
    9. Infection, which can be caused by bacterial or fungal infections affecting the toe.
If your big toe pain is persistent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms like fever or if you are worried about it, it's important to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention diabetic neuropathy. I see ads for it on tv. Thank you, just the same, I learned a lot. 🙏👍🏻👏🏻

    Hey
Can you make videos on how to assess specific muscle and how do you prescribe physical therapy exercises for that particular muscles keeping in mind the particular diseases a patient in dealing with?

Dr, i had what i believe was balinitis. I need help, there is a ring scar that has tightened around the shaft, it feels hard when soft. The head feels hard and looks bigger, its dry but sticky. I dont know what to do, i feel the infection is gone but these things are still here.
