    To be honest the Singapore Air Force is considered to be one of the most advanced and formidable standing air force in the world. Having the most modern advance jets doesn't mean anything unless your airmen are well trained. That is exactly what they have been doing for over 30 years of flying detachments all over the world. Singapore's military as a country is also nothing short of a miracle in a span of just 50 years. Congratulations to them indeed.

      The RSAF keeps a significant proportion of its F-15SGs and F-16C/D squadrons abroad in training so the force cannot be decapitated in a first strike scenario. As there is little opportunity to launch missiles and drop bombs in the region most of this training is carried out in the US in conjunction with the USAF. The top RSAF pilots also attend Red Flag (USAF equivalent of the USN's Top Gun Fighter Weapons School) exercises, and graduates pass the knowledge onto their colleagues at home.

Because Singapore is just preparing for the worst possible outcome (which is Singapore being Invaded by a country) Singapore needs to have a modern fleet handled by skilled pilots to give the invaders a hell of a fight. If you seen history, usually with air dominance comes victory. If Singapore just have their army and navy (but with your logic I’m assuming none) Singapore infrastructure would be repeatedly bombed with minimal resistance allowing Singapore to be taken over much more easily. As a Singaporean senior citizen, i had served NS in the early 70s. That time our priority is to defend our own citizens to deter sudden attacks from the Vietnamese military forces. The Vietcong soldiers were best fighter soldiers that defeated the Americans soldiers in the Vietnam War. Now, the US is trying to get Singapore to fight a proxy war with China who is our our main trading partner. Singapore is not stupid like the Ukraine, the Philippines who are blindly taking orders from the US. I will not fight with China.
    My main worry is Singapore is too reliant for the US military weapons such as advanced fighter jets, naval ships, missiles, etc. Singapore should diversify its risks of over dependence on the US and its allies military weapons.

    • @iankuah8606
      @iankuah8606 Před 5 měsíci +8

      I served with MINDEF and the RSAF in the late '70s. The US and European weapons are the best and most reliable in the world and also have the best aftersales parts back up.
      You only have to look at the conflcit in Ukraine to see that Russia has suffered a huge loss of prestige and weapons sales after their very public equipment failures against a weaker foe. Furthermore their backup is sketchy, hence Indonesia and India are now starting to look elsewhere. Chinese planes are mostly knockoffs of Russian designs and they can't get the engines to work properly. You really don't want to be in a situation where your weapons are expensive paperweights!
      Amateurs talk strategy, professionals talk logistics. The reason SG went with the F-15SG and now the F-35 variants is that the common weapons platform support structure was evolved around the F-16 C/D aircraft. The last thing you need is lack of commonality in ordnance and other support systems in the middle of a conflict. This is why India is finally beginning to rationalise its air force, which previously drew aircraft types and systems from different countries. I can't even begin to think why they went down that road in the first place apart from vested interests of various politicians and military leaders at the time!
      Have faith in the SG Government. They know what they are doing.

    • @pervertt
      @pervertt Před 4 měsíci

      Agree with iankuah that lack of commonality in defence hardware is a problem you want to avoid in any military. Other air forces in the region have made this mistake, to their disadvantage. Singapore could do a lot worse than buy war planes from the Americans, which are arguably the best on the market. You do not want to buy from a country with which Singapore is not politically aligned. Ukraine's air force is a good example of caveat emptor.

    • @iankuah8606
      @iankuah8606 Před 4 měsíci

    • @pervertt
      @pervertt Před 4 měsíci

      @@iankuah8606 I was referring more to the difficulty of integrating NATO hardware into Ukrainian Sukhois and MiGs. Even if sympathetic Western countries donated AIM-9X Sidewinders (short range air-to-air missiles) to Ukraine, there is no easy way to fit these into their Soviet era fighters. Ukraine needs a platform like the F-16 to make such donations work. This aligns with your original (and valid) argument about the importance of commonality.
