This song basically got me to finally go visit japan in 2016 . When i played it stepping there for the first time i couldn't hold a few tears .. played in on repeat the hole time and play it everytime i go there .. now learning it on the piano February 2021

She is singing in the Amami kotoba language therefore a part of Okinawa when the Satsuma clan illegally overthrew the Ryukyuan Kingdom. The Amami Oshima people & others in the island chain during that time fought the Japanese invaders after losing the Satsuma clan now which is Kagoshima took Amami Oshima and made it a part of their prefecture for fighting them. The people still remember who they were their music but they have changed somewhat to Satsuma's influence. But deep down they know that they are Shimanchu.

This is a very very very sad song. The lyrics are in a dialect only spoken on specific island. The translation of it is out there. I first heard, it like so many of us, in the episode of samurai champloo. And it made me aware of bad unavoidable things that will happen to me. And they did happen...
Now when I hear that Song I'm transported back in time where life was better. And it makes me sad. Everybody is gone now. I'm alone...

Don’t even remember how long ago I first heard this, hits home every time, leaves me absolutely in shambles. The world and my life has changed a lot since then, but this hasn’t. Might be due to the anime and the feeling it conveyed in that beautiful scene. Thank you for uploading, really.
This similar style of singing is also used in the place I originally come from. As we follow a shamanic type of culture back at my hometown so we use this in our traditional songs to call the gods (Hinduism) but the culture is also influenced by Buddhism and I have also seen similar style of singing in some Tibetan songs too. Find this similarity a bit shocking and intriguing at the same time!
What is this song exactly about, i read its from the Amami region in Japan and although I have read the lyrics and am also a Japanese language student but can someone tell me where I can read more on this?
This song is a folklore of the Ryukyu people, who were used as fodder for wars and were enslaved and had their culture nearly extinct. Fatefully, their culture and stories thrived through their music and although much diluted, their spirit still lives on.
In Japan, Okinawa is one of the major places where this culture and its influence can still be seen, however these people are still discriminated against to this day.
This song shows that these people want to break free of these atrocities, live and enjoy life like normal people and be happy, but since direct expression of such things was dangerous for them back then, therefore they wrote this song in the form of a lover's metaphor.
In Hinduism we have similar musical tendencies, but the best of this art form is seen in the tribal areas, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan where you'll hear all sorts of beautiful stories and emotions in raw and soulful local language and music.
Creative inspiration sometimes works in a way, that channels through the media of a composer a tune, a melody, that represents some very deep and meaningful things. It's information carried by music, not by words. So this particular tune which is inseparable from unique style of singing by Ikue Asadzaki works all together as a true spirit of ancient Japan. A soul song, that tells about things that passed in times immemorial and is a weeping for those values and qualities of people and this nation that were present across Japanese islands long time ago. Some of those islands now lie hidden somewhere within the depths of the ocean....

@@Based_Face I think something is lost in the translation. Sometimes you can translate word for word but not convey the contextual meaning. And sometimes they translate the rhythmic patterns to make the song "singable" in another language. Great performance regardless.

This is not being recorded in a world class studio. You are essentially hearing a dead language. Their recording equipment is behind as well as their mastering, she peaks out of range continually, it’s part of what gives it such a haunting sound.
