    🤔 NEW HERE? 🤔
    Hi! My name is Christopher Odd and I’ve been playing video games on the internet for a few years. I really enjoy a variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (Bioshock, The Witcher, etc), strategy/roguelike games (XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, Darkest Dungeon, etc), and RPGs (Dark Souls, Dragon Age, etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!

    Gather your party, and return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power.
    Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a Mind Flayer parasite planted in your brain. Resist, and turn darkness against itself. Or embrace corruption, and become ultimate evil.
    From the creators of Divinity: Original Sin 2 comes a next-generation RPG, set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
    Choose from a wide selection of D&D races and classes, or play as an origin character with a hand-crafted background. Adventure, loot, battle and romance as you journey through the Forgotten Realms and beyond. Play alone, and select your companions carefully, or as a party of up to four in multiplayer.
    Abducted, infected, lost. You are turning into a monster, but as the corruption inside you grows, so does your power. That power may help you to survive, but there will be a price to pay, and more than any ability, the bonds of trust that you build within your party could be your greatest strength. Caught in a conflict between devils, deities, and sinister otherworldly forces, you will determine the fate of the Forgotten Realms together.
    Forged with the new Divinity 4.0 engine, Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you unprecedented freedom to explore, experiment, and interact with a world that reacts to your choices. A grand, cinematic narrative brings you closer to your characters than ever before, as you venture through our biggest world yet.
    The Forgotten Realms are a vast, detailed and diverse world, and there are secrets to be discovered all around you -- verticality is a vital part of exploration. Sneak, dip, shove, climb, and jump as you journey from the depths of the Underdark to the glittering rooftops of the Upper City. How you survive, and the mark you leave on the world, is up to you.
    allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it.
    offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes.
    based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight.
    through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story.
    allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

    A few things in case you guys haven't figured them out since recording this episode:
    -silence does *not* break concentration spells
    -you can see who's concentrating on which spell at the bottom of the character portraits in the initiative order. So if you want to check which enemy to target to break a nasty spell, you don't have to manually check every single bad guy, a quick glance at the top of the screen is enough

  • @monosito59
    @monosito59 Před 9 měsíci +23

    The way counterspell works is if the level of the spell cast is lower than the level counterspell was cast (base level of 3rd), it automatically nullifies the spell cast. If the counterspell is done at a lower level than the spell cast, the counterspell caster has to roll against the other spell caster. If the counterspell roll doesnt meet the required ability check, the spell slot is consumed and the opposing spell still goes through. The latter of which is what happened. Cone of cold was a 5th level spell, and you used counterspell at its base level of 3rd level. Gale failed his check to beat Zell's spell. Also, counterspell is done as a reaction. And each person has 1 reaction per turn. So if you or an opponent has already used a reaction to ATTEMPT a counterspell (regardless of whether it succeeds or fails), you dont have to worry about getting countered again until their place in the turn order resets.

    I've found the most reliable way to deal with enemy counterspells is to just bonus action a low level spell to get the reaction out before you cast a big spell

    Odd while you have Gale in the party anytime you encounter a large group that has yet to close in on you that Ice Storm spell is your best friend. It has a large aoe, does fair amount of dmg, and the iced surface is extremely effective. Literally the only thing Ketheric himself managed to do in the first fight against me was slip and go prone. And then eat half a dozen attacks from Lae'zel & Karlach ending the battle in the process lol

    That delay turn idea is something I really want too, or hold action. Its been implemented in similar D&D games, hopefully it's on Larrain's road map.

    • @nickrubin7312
      @nickrubin7312 Před 9 měsíci

      yeah, but in 5e which BG3 is based on there is not delay, so that's just rules implementation, and they'll have to homebrew, which would be hard for many reasons with initiative, spells lasting a turn, etc. which was the reasoning for delay removal by WoTC
      if by similar DnD you mean Pathfinder, that's actually Pathfinder, otherwise I would only think about Solasta, which is more or less faithful implementation of 5e and there is "ready action", but that's a bit different, which Larian chose to omit for some reason (maybe speed of combat for general audience)

    Yeah, the Moonrise Tower assault is a hard battle. When I went in the first time, I had all the Harpers including Jaheira and it took me two tries. I wound up going around the kitchen entrance on the second try because that hallway that leads in from the front gate is a KILLBOX. Coming in from the side, you have a lot more movement options, and their formation isn't as well-positioned again you.
    But it's rough. At no point was it an easy fight.

    There is a rule in DnD 5e where a PC can, on their turn, hold an action (not bonus action) or cast a spell waiting on a specific trigger. IE a wizard can wait to cast Fireball until the fighter and rogue have had a chance to disengage or move away from the boss.
    However, the rule stipulates that when casting a spell, if the conditions you made under which you would've cast the spell don't occur, then you don't cast the spell, but you still lose the spell slot and any related components as if you did cast it.
    I could see that being kind of difficult to program into the game, so I could see why they didn't put it in

    at 38:05 you should check the spell level of what the enemy is casting before attempting to counter it - your counterspell must match/exceed it to succeed I believe - it was a level 5 cone of cold vs a level 3 counterspell
    Also, you should use psionic backlash IMO in addition to counterspell if another character has the ability to and it's just extra punishment, you can use 2 reactions on the same enemy in that scenario

    DND 5e allows you to "prepare" an action but you need to state beforehand what you're prepping for and what's the trigger. So, for example, say you have a big solo boss and you cast banishment on it. If the boss gets banished you have a minute (or less, if you so choose and drop the spell early) to prepare your attack. A wizard could say "I'm prepping a Finger of Death spell for when the boss reappears" and once the boss is back, said prepped spell gets launched. But in a different situation, if you prepare a spell for a trigger (for example, enemy getting into range of the spell) and the trigger doesn't happen, the spell fizzles away and you lose the spell slot and the action.

    So sad with your playthrough. In mine I had an army of Harpers helping me out to clear the lower level. This is, as you found, a lot tougher with only Jaithera rather than her and I think at least a dozen Harpers and Fists to help (and you still get the xp even if they do the kill). Also I didn't have to fight Isobel or Marcus. Such a different encounter to my playthrough. Feeling kind of guilty having such an easy run. Well done pulling it off.
    If you had gone to Moonrise first you will meet all these named characters and interact with them and get missions (including going to meet Balthazar). Being a 'True Soul' you just walk through the front gate. You'll also meet some old 'friends like the Goblins from the sacked village. Unfortunately you missed out on a lot. My mistake, and it still bugs me, is that I decided not to rescue the Tieflings as I was afraid I was going to break my cover. Still feel raw that you couldn't rescue them when you storm the Tower.
    If you had played being a Wizard from the beginning you get to understand the ins and outs of spells, cantrips and counterspells. Don't feel bad as it really is the first time you have used a wizard.

    Generally wizards dont need armor with spells like shield, and Mage armor, Blur is also amazing.
    Shield is almost a must pick, and counterspell. XD
    It is interesting to see how others play with wizards though.
    38:00
    Its a good idea to check what level a spell is the enemy is casting.
    If an enemy casts a level 4 spell and you counterspell at level 3, you will have to roll for it to succeed, or cast counterspell at level 4.
    A level 3 counterspell cancels a level 3 spell.
    A level 4 counterspell cancels a level 4 or lower spell.
    A level 3 counterspell will not automatically cancel a level 4 or higher spell, otherwise it would be crazy that a level 3 counterspell can cancel out a level 9 spell, without any check.
    40:30
    Fireball doesnt leave a flammable surface, D&D is very specific in its wording, like Ice knife explains it leaves a slippery surface, or flaming Sphere says it leaves behind a flaming surface trail. A spell will specify if it leaves a surface of some kind, if it doesnt say it does, then it doesnt.
    Like you can take a lighter to some surfaces, without anything catching fire. XD it will depend on your DM though, like if the surface is a carpet flooring they’d allow it to catch fire, or tapestry on some nearby walls, but a stone surface would just char.
    47:00
    Silence only stops future spells from being cast, not current effects, and even then only people in that area. Personally I dont think silence is that great of a spell in BG3. It is good in some situations in roleplay, like to muffle the sound of Knock, or if you are sneaking in a house and plan to assassinate a guard or kidnap someone, as it mutes all sound, it could even muffle gun fire if you had a gunslinger assassin.
    In general open combat though, in BG3 especially, I havent found a way to make it that great though, because as witnessed a minute later… enemies can just walk out of it.
    56:30
    The only way to deal with a counter-spell is if you had a reaction on your caster still, basically you are counter-spelling a counterspell.
    I’m not sure how it works in BG3 though. If your caster doesnt have a reaction, then you either suffer the effect, or unless you had a second caster. In Tabletop it is also DM dependent, some DM’s wont allow it if your caster cast a bonus action spell, because of some rule that exists, which is a poorly written rule in some people’s opinions, in that you cant cast two spells that have a level in a single turn.
    So it would require testing if you can counterspell after casting something like Misty step.
    Larion typically goes with the rule of cool and Fun though, so it would shock me if they denied the ability to counterspell after using a bonus action spell. It is a bit of a Niche situation though.
    I really got to give you guys props to doing this fight. XD
    If you had saved Isobel, and the last light Inn was still a safe zone, this fight is a bit easier because you have backup from the harpers and flaming fists.
    Also this is a bit late now, but the Adamantine shield really isnt that great, better off choosing the armor pieces. Laezel, Shadow, Karlach can all wear medium armor, and get a pretty high AC from it. I got Laezel up to like 21 AC with that and other gear. Karlach is like 18 I think.
    I also gave Karlach a magic piece that gives her Shield as a spell, so for one round she can have like 23 AC which is insane.

    COUNTERSPELL
    CounterSpell always has an automatic success against spells of the same level or lower as the CounterSpell being used. So, if the enemy uses a 5th Circle spell and you use a CounterSpell with a 5th Circle slot, it's a guaranteed counter. If the CounterSpell's slot is lower, a roll will be made, and the difficulty, in short, will depend on the opponent's spell slot, ignoring the CounterSpell's slot in this case. In other words, to nullify a 6th Circle spell, using a CounterSpell of 3rd, 4th, or 5th Circle is the same thing, but using a 6th Circle counter will ensure success.
    In summary: If you want to guarantee the CounterSpell, always use a slot of the same level as the casted spell or higher (if you don't have one of the same level). If you want to take the risk with a roll, always use the lowest slot you have.

    If the spell is 3rd level or lower - no check on counterspell, if higher - you either match lvl of the spell with counterspell slot (lvl5 spell you counterspell with lvl5 spell slot for counterspell), or you roll for check with lower counterspell. At least that's is from memory what I understand. Otherwise it would be broken, that you autocounter spells lvl5+ with your lvl3 counterspell without any rolls (easy power word kill counter, lol)

    No way to hold a turn really, but you can kinda cheese the system with movement. Like say you have an enemy next to Gale, a squishy wizard, you want to move him but can’t because he will take an attack of opportunity, and he is close to the start of turn order. If the enemy next to him is low health, you can end Gale’s turn, kill that enemy with another character, go back to Gale, and cancel his end turn order and now he is free to move or act.
    Its a bit Niche, but it can come in handy.
    A 17 AC Gale for you guys is nice though, Tanky wizard. Haha

    38:03 cone of cold is a level 5 spell.
    Counter spell is a level 3 spell. When attempting to counter level 4 or higher spells "your character" in this case gale, must make a successful "check" in order to nullify the spell.
    Real Dnd works differently tho. "Counter spell" can only counter spells levels of same or lower levels.
    To counter high level spells they need to upcast it.

      @maxsalmon4980 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Not so. It works the same way; if you counter a higher level spell, you roll your casting stat to see if it works. If you upcast, you can auto-counter higher level spells, but you have the option of not upcasting if you wanna roll the dice.

    Yes, in D&D you can delay your initiative, though I believe that choice is locked in for the rest of a given battle (e.g. if you choose to delay, that's your new initiative roll)

    • @thatindiandude4602
      @thatindiandude4602 Před 9 měsíci +2

      I thought otherwise. Like you can only hold your action but not movement or bonus and you have to set certain terms of what you want to do.

    • @maxsalmon4980
      @maxsalmon4980 Před 9 měsíci +1

      You can't change your init count in D&D, but you can choose to use your action to prepare for an out-of-turn reaction based on a trigger. If the trigger you choose (such as: enemy casts a spell, or enemy comes within reach of me, or whatever) doesn't happen, you've wasted your action. Regardless, your initiative count is the same, you basically just change your action into a reaction for that turn.

      in 5e rules there is no delay, there is only "ready action" (idk why Larian didn't implement that, maybe for a flow of combat and it being too complex for general audience), they removed delay, it may return in One DnD

    • @maxsalmon4980
      @maxsalmon4980 Před 9 měsíci
