- Alfred- one of the only kings in English history to receive the title GREAT. He created a navy, he created roads ano infrastructure completely re-building the Anglo-Saxon state, he set up a strong administrative system of government, he was also passionate about literacy and learning and invested significantly in education on Friday the 26th of October 899 at the age of 50 or 51. He had been king of Wessex for 28 years and King of the Anglo-Saxons for 3 years before his death. While kings and nations around him had crumbled under Viking Invasion Alfred, the youngest of 5 sons and who never expected to be king, managed to completely transform the land he lived in and laid the ground work for what would become a United England. And yet Alfred who was buried in great pomp and reverence, has no tomb for us to remember him by. The journey and mystery of what happened to his remains spans over a thousand years.

Thanks Evelyn. Henry the 8th is the author of this problem and others. I always wondered why he would allow the bones of his own ancestors to be disturbed, exposed to the elements, or destroyed. Seems to be a kind of insanity. Why not just leave his ancestors and predecessors where they were. I've always been interested in archeology, but when it comes to the remains of people they should be treated with respect and placed where they belong.
The kings that were lost surprise me. This wasn’t the only one. The next video will surprise you as well. The saints tombs that were opened and destroyed was part of him wanting to destroy pope-ishness, idolatry, and abuses of the church. But if we’re really being honest…a huge reason was for the money he got from it to fund a war.
Very unlikely to have been a descendant of Alfred and even in our own time no member of the present Royal Family offered to help identify the remains of Richard III
Yes, nowadays, I believe Henry VIII would be diagnosed as schizophrenic with
special needs!
Evelyn this is my favorite video you've ever made. Just so well done. Thank you!
Ohh yay! Thank you Frank! I’m so glad you enjoyed! This was a fun journey to make this video.
The Tudors were Welsh, I believe.noble but not entirely royal.royalty died with Richard 3rd.
@@Prfdt3 Henry VII’s dad was welsh. His dad was a half brother to Henry VI (same mother who was a Princess of France). His Mother was from a legitimized line of John of Gaunt so also related to Henry VI.
This is the clearest I have ever heard of King Alfred's remains. Thank you so much. ❤❤❤
🥰🥰🥰 so glad it resonated with you! Thank YOU so much!
Never thought Henry would destroy a place that possibly held ALFRED THE GREAT.
This is an interesting one for me. Me neither. And the next video I do will surprise you as well!
Thank you, another interesting history video. Not sure why Alfred's missing bones move me as much as it does. Would be amazing if one day they could find them.
Alfred is an an absolutely fascinating man…and as Kings go- he was indeed great. His story moves me too.
I love listening to you narrate, Evelyn. Your voice is soothing, and captivating. :)

Wow! At least you at some point in time
they had been in the proximity. Don't give
up you may find the rest some day.👍🏼🌹
What a journey. You’d think Henry wouldn’t have let Kings bones destroyed. Guess not! Good grief!
so very sad, that the man responsible for our nation has almost disappeared to history. i am from Hampshire and visit Winch several times a year
Isn’t it amazing that Henry would allow his body to be lost? That one always baffles me.
@@EvelynEdwardsI don’t think we (the English) became aware of just how important Aelfred was until the Victorian era…
it’s amazing how we can walk the same land as alfred ruled and roamed
Captivating! What an interesting story! I wish they could've done a DNA on the pelvis.
You can read about the testing they have done on the googles! Very very interesting stuff!!
Thats so interesting.
That damn henry viii had zero respect.
Are there any descendants of Arthurs these days???
Do you mean Alfred?
@EvelynEdwards LOL! I always do that. Yes, thats what I meant. Hahahaha
He was a great king
Captivating. What would the world be like if Henry didn’t happen ? Would monks be running our civil services ?
I still think the reformation would have happened in England. It just would have looked different. 💚
Hopefully they will work it out one day
💜💜💜
💚💚💚😉
Thankyou evelyn maybe by the spring. Bring in time team.can you get tony robinson to dig.or that other proffessor lady.why havent royal family financed this? He is their descendant.maybe one day.ok and like richard 2nd we will look into the face of our king.

If they need a DNA sample to test against, Alfred the Great was my 31st great grandfather.
He is my 30th GGF
