- Learn how to replace your rear brakes. This video will show you how to replace brake pads on rear disc brakes. It takes 30 min to do both disc brakes and is really easy. Brake pads cost $30 and all you need are some wrenches, c-clamps, and a jack to lift the car. ANYONE CAN DO THIS!!!
This procedure will be similar on most dodge and Chrysler cars such as the dodge neon, dodge caliber, Chrysler intrepid, etc.

Dear Chris, shop quoted me $600 for fronts and rears all around, even thought I don't NEED rotors, they say it voids the pad warranty....apparently, they are nuts, or they think I am. Anyway, this video guided me thru the process, and rear pads are on....the fronts are still thick, and I owe you big time !! THANKS !!

Actually I do brakes all the time... I like how I call it a fuel line by mistake (I think I even correct myself) and you think this is my first time... How did I use the piston compressor wrong?

I have learned a lot from ChrisFix videos so far. I searched videos replacing brake pads and I had no idea about his old videos until now. Recent his videos looks nice, fancy, maintain focus and voice stably, and equip nice tools but I really like this video even he couldn't take apart the pad at once and even didn't wear gloves. Maybe that's exactly how I look like and, mayby, many people who need help from his video look like. Of course I love his recent videos as well but this old video makes me feel better. Thanks Chris!
The key for me, being a novice was to get the simple $5 (priceless to me) brake tool. I did not have this for the first side I tried. Do yourself a favor and get this. Also remember to grease the back side of the where the clip that goes into the piston is. This will make this project much easier. This is the best video out there. Best mechanic and lighting. Watch first install after. I really appreciate the people who made this.

With this car (pt cruiser) you have to compress the piston a little in order to slide the calipers off... I originally tried to just slide the calipers off like I do on all of my other cars but for some reason the PT Cruiser has to have the piston compressed... No matter what you will have to compress the piston when you put the new pads on though... Give it a shot without initially compressing it and if it doesnt come off, compress it... Let me know what happens!

Many thanks. I can't count how many times I've changed brake pads on various cars, including the fronts on this one. Got stuck twice, watched your video both times and confirmed I was doing the 'right thing' and just kept at it and all eventually worked fine. 60 mins for lefts, 20 mins for rights ;-)
yes, high temp grease... most pads come with it in the box
I came to this video in 2023 just to see where Chris started and am inspired that I can start where I am. I don't have to be perfect.

And a good thing to do is make sure that you have clean hands when handling the new pads because you'll get crap all over the new surface.
Or wear gloves and change them out after greasing

Great video Chris. I have a 2001 PT Cruiser and it only has 63000 miles on it. It's in great condition, but when the rear breaks get wet it makes a very loud grinding noise. It only does it when I'm backing out and it only last for a short period of time. It feels as if the rear breaks are activating without me pushing on the break pedal. Any idea what the problem might be?

Hey Chris, Love your videos - learnt how to change disc and brake pads on my Audi a1 through your video's. I am thinking of changing the rear pads and my question is ' Do I need to take the handbrake cable off the calipaer to change or should i leave it on?' Obviously I will disingage the hand brake to keep the brakes loose. Thanks again ChrisFix

The rear disc brakes are an option... The higher end pt cruisers have them (this is a touring)...
hey chris, love your videos, you've helped us out a ton with tons of knowledge. can i ask a question? im about to do my back disc brakes (pads only) on 04 chevy malibu v6 and am not sure how to handle the piston. can you tell me why others brake the bleeder valve to compress the piston but you didnt in your PT cruiser rear brake video? its my understanding the bleeder is broken so that the brake fluid isnt pushed back into the master cylinder.... just looking for some advice/knowledge to attach to what im seeing and to do correct procedure. thanks a ton ChrisFix, you RoCK

I'm changing the back brakes on my 2016 Kia Soul tomorrow and couldn't be happier I found this video. I thought I had everything I need, but it looks like I'll have to run out and pick up some grease.
Not really... just dont hit the sensor... This PT Cruiser has ABS as well and you never see it in the video because it is behind the caliper... You say "shoes" so do you mean pads or do you have rear drums?
Sometimes you have to torch the rotor or drum brake I was wondering why? I also wanted to see if it clips onto the rotor when putting back the caliper or does it click?

I don't get how clamping the opposite of the piston compresses the piston. How does moving the pad compress the piston on the other side of the rotor? I am not a mechanic. Love the videos.
Should be the same thing... This will work on most cars because most disc brakes are similar!!!

One other trick you may consider, is to avoid pushing nasty old brake fluid back up into the lines/master cylinder, you can (as you start to compress the piston) release the bleeder valve and let the brake fluid escape the back of the caliper. Make sure you don't release pressure before closing the bleeder valve, as that will introduce air into a closed system (bad)...
It's also a good idea to flush the brake fluid, but that's another vid now isn't it? :-) Good work man! Keep payin it forward!
PS. other vehicle manufacturers rear disks operate MUCH differently, and to compress the cylinder you have to "screw" in as you push. Very tough without the right tools, but it can be done.
That is a good tip thanks! It def is another video. I try to keep simple stuff simple so anyone can learn to change their brakes, but if you are more advanced and want to do it this way, more power to ya!
Chris fix just take the bottom screw out flip caliper up take pads out then put caliper back down saves time and faster

1. is it okay if we did not bleed the fluid when squeezing the calliper back .
2, is the anti-seaze okay
As long as you do not open the system, you do not need to bleed it.
You do not need to open and bleed the system. Simply Pol off the master cylinder reservoir lid like mentioned @ 14:25.

I just changed a ball joint and had to remove the caliper. when put it back on it makes a screeching noise when the car is moving. like something metal on metal. any ideas that could help me address the problem and fix?

Why would you need to releave pressure in the brake line, unless you added fluid since your last break job? Don't you want the pressure to return to its original level?

You have a couple things that could cause that, first thing is the piston itself that wil get some rust spots on it so it wil get stuck, second thins are the guide pins also same thing they wel get some rust on them and not move properly, third one are the pads itself they can get stuck also because of rust

My PT emergency brake got stuck. The handle wont go down at all, it is stuck even if I try to push the button to release it. Any ideas? the car had been sitting for months. Drove it around for a bit, parked it at an incline I put the ebrake all the way up and now I can't get the handle to go down. Any ideas? please help. thank you. ;(
Go to the rear brakes and use a pry bar on the brake itself to force it (when the handle is in the down position).
Emergency cable is frozen in the steel jacket at the rear wheel. You can hit the brake shoes in rear sharply with a hammer to jar it free. If that dont work replace the cable. A old mechanic quick trick is disconnect cable at rear brake. You just wont have use of emergency brake.

hi Im a bit confused, eric the carguy does a 2002 cruiser rear wheel brake job, but its not disc/pads, its drum and shoe brakes, I have a 2002 2ltr and the rear brakes are same has yours, so my question is I guess did chrysler do two types of rear brakes on some cruisers,

Two types of PT Cruiser brakes in the rear. Full drum and disc with e-brake shoes in the hat. The disc brakes have a piston with self adjusting cable and a connection to the e-brake. Rear discs have pads but also an inner brake shoe for just the e-brake.

Neons only have rear drum brakes, unless it's the rare Neon RT.

+Melissa Kay Glaze You just pull it off. On many Hondas there are a few screws on the inner section near the wheel studs. It's easy to figure out if you just look at the rotor.
