I came here just to learn some stuff about snakes. Besides, I don't even own snakes at all.
Yea same, I even live in a country where snakes are banned, cuz they don't live in the wild here
"canary eggs work too"
Me, who has been raising canaries since childhood: I found my calling!
Maybe you could try selling them online if that's legal for people like this lol.
Sounds like you could definitely get a niche market for selling the eggs!
How often do they lay eggs? I don't know anyone with pet birds, it never occurred to me they'd lay eggs regularly, but it makes sense!
Ah, Tilapia. The natural prey of Garter snakes and gym rats.
"There's also blind snakes, which are termite-eaters..."
That's quite a dangerous game you're playing there if you own one.
Escaped feeder crickets: Annoying
Escaped feeder termites: OH GOD THE HOUSE
Yeah, I'm not sure whether my apartment management would appreciate me having those around as a feeder source!
At petsmart we are told to just throw the finch eggs away, so we have a few customers that come in on the days we do bedding changes and ask for the eggs. We happily give them away.
I wonder what regulations keep them from packaging them and selling them.
we unintentionally keep snails in our mail box and they happily munch on our mail if we don't collect it fast enough XD
My mind before watching the video: when I grow up I’m gonna get a egg eater
My mind after watching the video: ok may I’ll just get a legless lizard
Legless lizards aren't exactly easy to keep either. Garter snakes are arguably the best reptiles and most widely avialible snake.
the end just turned into "why not to get an egg eating snake"
Many people have gotten eggies, thinking they are easy - then watch them starve.
They SOUND easy to care for (and an established adult female is pretty simple), but males, or juveniles, or heaven forbind hatchlings, are a real challenge. There are 3 reliable sellers of finch eggs in the US that will ship eggs - and this summer all 3 had a waiting list at the same time.
I do have some eggies (2 females, 1 male, and 9 eggs in the incubator) and the facecbook group for their owners is full of people who got them assuming they could find small eggs, or who got them on a whim from a seller who claimed they could be fed scrambled egg from a dish.
Tube feeding is hit or miss - sometimes it works well, but it is very easy to overfeed this way, and can cause more harm than good, and under the best of circumstances, it is still stressful for the snake.
@@karencostanzo2906 while tube feeding would be stressful for the snake it's better that then letting them starve to death right?
@@vincenttrigg4521 Of course - if you know how to do it. Sadly, if you do it incorrectly, or feed too much, you can kill the snake, and if you do it too often, they may not start to eat on their own. Anyone serious about keeping egg-eaters should prepare for the possibility of also keeping birds at some point in order to keep them fed.
Fairchild, as explained in the video, you would really only want an adult female unless you have access to finch eggs or bird eggs of similar size.
Problem they also address is that if you get adults then you don't know how old they are.
Basically better to get the finch birds and have them laying eggs before getting the snakes.
Edit: originally said the males can eat quail eggs because I swear they said it in the video but many are saying they are still too big of eggs
@@vincenttrigg4521 Nope - need SMALLER than quail eggs for young or male snakes. But you are correct - having finches laying before getting these snakes would be a good idea. (And if yours can take quail eggs, there is a marlet to sell the finch eggs you no longer need.)
Emily: "He never croaks anymore!"
Tree frog: "I'm about to ruin this woman's entire career"
Emily: "there also mildy venomous but thats beside the point"

Thank you for clearing up the myth about egg eating snakes drinking whisked up eggs from a bowl. I found a baby egg eater at an expo, and the seller said it would drink whisked up eggs. However, I didn't want to bet the snakes life on that and passed on purchasing it. It's good know that was the right decision.
I originally read the title as “the best rodents don’t eat snakes”
Edit: thank you so much for all the likes and replies it’s the most I’ve ever gotten 😁
Also: Garter snakes are stinkin' rad. Just for the record.
I work with garter snakes in the wild they are feisty and super different between each individual

Wild caught snakes when put into captivity: "I am straight up Not having a good time."
I keep aquatic snail as pets and there are several kinds that would work well as feeders for dekay's brown snake that are SUPPER easy to care for and breed such as malaysian trumpet snails and rams horn snail. So long as they have relatively clean water and some kind of food they will breed (I would recommend adding some cuddle bone to help with there shells if possible). That way you could rase your snakes food and know that it is pericite free and has been feed a good diet.

PLEASE breed Dekay's, just so we can watch their little baby faces every year.
Oh I'm positive they'll be breeding them once they're old enough. Emily knows how hard they are to get captive bred, I'm sure she'll produce them if she can.
Since she commented that if people know you're breeding them then the lists are already full... methinks they are going to be, and possibly don't want to make people angry or jealous
Dekay’s are hard to keep in captivity most of the time, my friend owns two brown dekay’s she caught in the while, and live till this day. But their babies haven’t been able to stay in captivity sadly, nothing wrong with them but they just can’t live in captivity as great as others
Not me crying over garter snakes dying after their mate dies because my grandfather just passed two months after his wife of 70 years passed 😭😭😭😭
Something to note about snakes that eat worms/slugs and other inverts (including crawfish, though unsure about scorpions lol) is that they're relatively easy to create colonies of as feeders yourself. Obviously some people don't want to keep pets *for* their pets-- but especially earthworms and nightcrawlers are very easy to get a breeding colony going! They're essentially composters for all your food waste :)
While it can be difficult to source food for snakes that are picky/unique eaters, just getting a couple to start and raising them as breeders yourself can be much simpler. It's a project for sure, but possible with less challenging feeders!
Me sitting here as a finch, canary and button quail owner but living in New Zealand where I can’t keep snakes
I was terrified of snakes. Watching yours and some other peoples snake videos helped me get rid of most of my fear. I now have a corn snake. She's.. nice.. almost most of the time :P
Lol I'm the same. I'm actualy considering getting my 9 yr old either a ball (slower more girth but don't eat aswel) or corn (slimmer and moves more but eats nearly anything offered) as a support snake for her I'm just unsure which to go for. And which would be best. I'll be honest I've run out of a pet shop cas a snake struck the tank as I walked past my hubby laughed his head off x
@@emmalou9067 I'd talk to a ball python breeder. ask if what they are feeding their hatchlings. make sure they are feeding fresh killed or frozen thawed rats (find one that is). this means they are already used to rats (it can be hard switching from mice) and it's already on killed (not live) and those are the biggest starting obstacles for a picky ball python. they also sometimes just go off food when your house gets a bit cooler in winter even tho they are not a brumating species
small n bitey. best thing to remember is that, while it might hurt, a snake bite aint gonna do anything to you unless it's a venomous one.
you and I have been on this journey about the same amount of time! which is really cool!
This is incredibly informative! As a rodent lover, I've never looked too much into owning a snake because I'm afraid I'd find feeding too upsetting. And I never knew garter snakes were an option as captive snakes, but now it's something to look into!!!
Garter snakes also have live birth, so you won't need to incubate any eggs!
SAME!! I have had 6 pet rats and 3 pet mice in the past few years, I love them soooo much. I actually worked at a pet shop in 20 some years ago and we got a shipment of frozen feeder mice, it was the first time we ever got frozen ones and the owner showed me the package of tiny babies he opened so I could see what they looked like. One of the babies was white with black polka dots, I almost cried it was the cutest little mouse ever. I have been and will always be a rodent lover.
I would consider a few garter snakes but the husband doesn’t like snakes sooooo. 😫🐍

I just don't get pets who eat only meat, since I'm vegetarian myself. I see nothing wrong with it, I just can't imagine feeding a snake live/dead mice since I love mice too. That being said don't force your animals who are carnivores or omnivores to only eat a vegan diet. That's horrible for them....it should be obvious but for some reason, people still try to do it anyway.

Title: The Best Snakes that Don't Eat Rodents
Video: Just come to terms with freezer mice. It'll be easier in the long run.
Yep. Accept that most pet species of snakes eat rodents and get over it
Main reason why I'll never own a snake despite wanting one, rodents are hard to find where I am
Garters are the only snake that it's convenient not to feed rodents. That it. The rodents don't even look that bad and you can get it ground up into pellets.
Snakes are the perfect solution to that 'what do I do with my hands?!' feeling when making videos or giving presentations, imo.
Also dat pickle rick, lel
For the egg eaters... would it be possible to use calcium carbonate, opn, and glucolactone with some small molds to create fillable shells?
That’s actually a pretty cool idea
It’d be awesome if it does work
They seem to rely very heavily on the egg smelling like a fresh egg so I dont think that would work sadly unless you managed to somehow scent it enough
I thought the exact same thing, but with agar sphereifacation. Definitely would like to see some experiments with a well established adult.
Emily’s wise words of wisdom:
“You don’t need teeth to catch an egg”
Emily, 2020
me: sees title
also me: garter snek
@Cyborg leaf I would like a Garter snake and a Kingsnake/Milksnake, But my mom hates snakes with a burning passion.
I live around where garter snakes live. Sometimes in the summer we go out to my dad's garage and look under some wood and light metal sheets that are out by the garage and look for them, sometimes they are by the apple tree or the yard! we normally move the ones in the yard though so they don't get stepped on or hunted by our cats, I once found this TINY baby garter it was so cuteeeeee!!
Me: is ok with rodents
Also me: nervous about getting a beardie cuz it eats crickets...
They also eat Dubia roaches. Those roaches are easy to breed and can't climb the sides of tanks. I kept them for my T. When my colony started getting to big, I would give some away to a friend.
I also would be way cooler with rodents than crickets & no roaches would be 1000 times worse.
What i do is buy bulk crickets on ebay and then freeze them and thaw as needed
I have a bearded dragon and I refuse to buy crickets unless I have to! My baby gets dubia's, and superworms horn worms and wax worms and at times large mealworms and of course ca supplements.
I'm digging on Garters SO HARD right now, they're such cuties. I want a lil colony of three or four. ❤
@@o0Theresa0o good to know!!! I haven't dug in on research yet, so I thought a pair was the standard. Since they tend to die so suddenly I wanted an extra to ensure that nobody gets left too alone. You won't hear a single complaint from me on more sweet noodles. :3
@@nixand_brennt Maybe a pair is considered standard by some people. However, what might be 'standard' and what is ideal for the snakes are not necessarily the same thing.
@@o0Theresa0o and that's exactly why i dig in on research before making an animal purchase.
A good feeder fish ive found/seen work is Convic Cichlids, specifically for elephant trunk snakes. Though they are seen as more of a pet and not feeder they can be a subsitute, they reproduce at a fast rate so availability is no problem or can produce your own. 👍🏾
You know, I always find it funny to see how tarantula breeders react to my experience with tarantulas. I point to species that are for experienced keepers only and say "Oh hey, this is one of the first species I started with". It always shocks them and I have to explain I interned at an insectary, that being said I still had little training and it was a lot hands on experience right then and there, hit the ground running type deal.
However I do have to say this, the only reason I could comfortably, confidently, and correctly care for the more advanced species right off the bat is because of my love for animals and years of studying different species (not necessarily care, but just generally), co-workers and other people ask me about good starter pets for kids and in all honesty, I always tell them that there is no good starter pet for kids. It should be more oriented as a family pet that the kid helps to take care of. AND ALWAYS DO YOUR RESEARCH! I hate when people want to get a pet and then know nothing about that animal.
I really want a snake, but my dad doesn't like that they eat rodents. Thanks, Snake Discovery for this video! U helped me get one step closer to getting a snake!
Edit: OMG!! I never thought I would get this many likes! 112!! THAT'S CRAZY! Thank you all so much!
@@joaosoares-rr5mj Although garter snakes don't NEED to eat rodents, they still WANT to. It's highly recommended that you give garter snakes rodents sometimes as a treat. That's why I've decided snakes just aren't right for me, even though I love how cute they are.
@@CottonRage I’m really glad that you chose what’s best for the animal! A lot of people won’t do that, they’ll get the animal even if they know they can’t provide the best life for them. These guys deserve the absolute best.

Egg eating snakes: “Snakes need to eat rodents? 👁👄👁”
"Hmm," *swallows chicken egg* "that's what we're supposed to eat?"
Hi Emily! In fact, there is another snake species perfect for those who do not want to feed on rodents. This is Dice snake - Natrix Tessellata. I don't know if they are on sale in the United States, but I can say with confidence that this is a very common snake in Europe and Russia. It only eats fish and has interesting coloration and behavior.
In theory, you could make a mini egg using a cracked egg and agar sphereifacation for the African egg eaters (possibly even dusting the outside with calcium to mimic a shell). I never had a pet African egg eater, and don't plan on it; however, it would be an interesting experiment to see.
For some reason I was thinking “Why haven’t I seen this video before” then I found out it was uploaded today
I have had rodents before as pets so I bond with other them really easily. I’ve also always wanted snakes but didn’t want to have a pet that I wouldn’t be able to feed properly.
I was in the same boat as you. I had pet rats, mice, and hamsters all through middle school and high school. I finally got a snake 7 months ago, because I realized I could feed frozen thawed. Feeding rodents is a lot easier if you know they had a humane death. I buy from online rodent distributors with good reputations for treating their rodents humanely. Feeding dogs involves dead animals as well, it just doesn't look as bad since the dead animals are ground up into kibble. So really, as long as the rodent was culled humanely, it is no different from feeding a dog or a cat
@@Katie-xl8fd Yeah. My mother would never be able to have a snake, because you'd have to feed it mice or rats, but she's had a dog, and we have dogs now, and somehow she doesn't have a problem with feeding them meat, or eating meat herself. If she had to cut the pig up herself, it would probably be a different deal.
Now I feed my dogs raw chicken wings, and I chop them up for them to be easier to eat. I think I could manage feeding a snake mice, or even having a colony of mice. You want pets, you have to deal with what they eat. If you want a herbivore, get a bunny, or a cow, or something.
I was in the same boat as you, but I fed F/T and they didn’t look like the pets I kept so I in theory got over it but rats still are close to my hearts
if you're really committed to getting a snake, you do become desensitized to the rodents pretty quickly. I've had two snakes for years and I love my little dudes. The dead mice and rats were pretty gross at first, and tbh I still will only hold them with tongs and get super grossed out if I accidently touch them, but I hardly think about it anymore.
thats my issue and i just cant do frozen thawed either. maybe one day but for now I cant do it I have a hamster as well which makes it so much harder.
Curious... has anyone tried making silicon-casted small eggs to inject raw egg yolk/whites and vitamins into for the younger egg-eaters before?
How would that work though? You would need the egg to have and outer shell so it doesn't spill everywhere. Also they need calcium from the shells.
@@scottsimpson5398 you could other substances such as agar instead, but i think the idea sounds interesting
@@themonsterbaby still probably not a good idea to have them ingest it though
I had a WC ribbon snake. I would get medium sized live minnows from the bait shop and put them in his water bowl. He would chow down! So easy to take care of. I would add these to the list . A little flighty but after handling for a while he calmed down. I would recommend for a 1st time keeper that doesn't want a big snake and doesn't want to feed rodents

Whenever my parents don't want me to get a pet they're just like "no it's too stinky"
If they are talking about droppings well they don’t usually smell. If they are talking about when the snakes musk well that isn’t to bad and you can wash that off.
I can’t get over how stinkin’ cute your DeKay’s brown snakes are! I can’t stop watching them slowly opening their tiny mouths to politely taking the food from the tongs on repeat.
Thank You, Emily! I've been trying to convince my mom and dad to buy me a snake for 3 years now, my mom thinks that I am too short (her exact words, ima 4'6 I think, only ten years old) and my dad has thrown around the word corn snake, but he's terrified of rats and mice, this just makes me one step closer, my dad is eliminated, now just to grow a couple feet.
height doesn't matter, but age does. Im 14, my first snake was at 12 and I was very ignorant with my 2 corn snakes, they escaped. Havent seen them again. Because I didn't look up how to hold down the top of the enclosure. They are escape artists and get a good 5 feet.
"you still have to give them organs" well... I eat those too 🤣
Motivation for me to keep finches, canaries, and quail. I can be popular with the egg eating snake owners and then EVERYONE WILL WANT TO BE MY FRIEND AHAHAHAHA
For the Finch eggs; can you fake the eggs too? I've seen how people make a tiny yolk from real yolk. And I'm pretty sure you can crush up eggshells into a fine powder, mould it in an egg mould and let it dry (made by hand to have the right size).
Add some egg white and seal the fake egg and give it to the snake.
It sounds like it would work, and that's probably easier then having birds lay eggs on command
More and more I just want to get a couple garter snakes. Except for earthworms, all the food items she listed are things I'm buying anyway to feed to myself, too! Chicken hearts fried and seasoned are delicious!

something really cool is that when I was fishing with my grandpa (we always trawl fish) in BC Canada, a very large garter snake was swimming along side the boat, either for protection from large fish, or tho snag the entrails when we cleaned the fish.

I didn’t use to have this issue before I got my mischief but now.... sadly. I’ve always had a soft spot for Garter’s too, so it’s very interesting to learn more about their diet!!
As far as pet snakes that don't eat rodents I think one of the best is probably Northern, Brown, or Banded Water snakes. They get to a decent size, typically calm down after having/handling them for a while, and can eat only fish and worms. The largest problem with them is finding ones that are captive bread, but I know there are at least a few breeders out there, and honestly I might get into breeding them eventually.

If we're gonna be technical, green anacondas also eat capybaras. So... the largest living species of snake does indeed eat the largest living species of rodent. Go figure.
