I am a college professor who has had this conversation with too many students over the years. Recently, I am seeing less and less of this problem. One can only hope that educational videos like this one are "making young writers more aware of the actual function of scare quotes." And I mean it when I say that "I appreciate you making this video." Really. I do.

When I asked them about this, they genuinely believed that putting words in quotation marks was a way of adding emphasis to them. It was the equivalent of underlining or italicizing the words, in their minds.

When I asked them what the quotation marks meant, that's what they told me. I'd say that about 2 or 3 in ten students would do this. Now that texting has become so central to daily life, the quotation marks have disappeared; I assume that's because it is hard to use quotation marks in texts.

On the other hand, if you say that the misuse of the quotation marks has dwindled (air quotes too?), maybe the kids are actually getting it. I "genuinely" felt "really bad" for Rowan in this video. It does really well at showing the importance of communication. "Because there's always a Brad out there" 😂🤣😂
As someone whose been a Brad before I genuinely have turned down female friends and been there as a genuine friend in their time of need. I only ever hooked up with a person who had a partner knowingly a single time and it was genuinely one of the biggest mistakes of your life. Trying to engage in a genuine relationship from that leaves almost unrepairable trust issues that only get worse as the relationship goes on and as far as just sex goes... Too complicated. Genuinely even if you don't give a shit about these other people's relationships you need to have some level of standards and ethics. Knowingly engaging with someone who is currently in a committed relationship sexually is not only akin to sticking your dick in shit but just genuinely not worth your time or remotely satisfying. It might be mind blowing sex but as a satyrmaniac who is literally constantly horny and can't survive without sex like biologically. "Genuinely without stimulus if I spend enough time without ejaculating I get a near constant off and on erection that causes debilitating blue balls making me basically crippled from the waist down. Same time though this issue doesn't require another person to be responsible for it." Sex doesn't bring any level of long term satisfaction. Hell even if you are doing it purely from a breeding perspective the sexual act ends the moment the baby comes out and I wouldn't portray a child as that possible long term satisfaction unless you intend to groom your child. Basically all you get is momentary satisfaction and find yourself forced to constantly search that same sensation out. Best case scenario you've started a deeply flawed relationship that will probably be miserable. Worst case you have been forced into a subservient relationship to this other person becoming nothing more then their sex toy. Most dramatic and interesting scenario you will be shot.

I do want to say that as someone on the spectrum, this is like my life all the time with misunderstandings and miscommunications. XD Oftentimes, people read into what I say when I'm genuinely just trying to say exactly what I'm saying, but my tone of voice is all wrong so they assume I'm trying to say something else! It can be frustrating, but can also lead to some hilarious moments. Gotta laugh at yourself sometimes.
