Riverdance the original seven-minute version was first performed at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest at the Point Theatre Dublin and broadcast to an estimated 300 million viewers worldwide.
One of THE defining moments in TV history. I was totally transfixed & barely remembered to breathe. When it finished I just kept screaming 'oh my god, oh my god'.
Also fun Easter-egg: huge smile of the background dancer in between Michael and Jean after the last note at 6:33. “Done - I hope the crowd liked it.” “They did!”
Those announcers are so stick in the mud. They changed their opinions like their outfits they probably did t even watch it. And the male is the worst he turned into a fan boy
What started as a 6-minute intermission during the Eurovision Song Contest 1994 in Dublin, Ireland, has developed into a huge show that even today, almost 30 years later, still radiates a powerful and impressive fascination. I myself saw the show during a European tour in Vienna, Austria, and when I look at the pictures here, I am overcome by wistful memories of a wonderful time.
An uncle-in-law of mine worked for RTE at the time (Irish state TV broadcaster and producer of Eurovision 1994!), got 2 tickets for himself and my aunt for the evening show. There was also a full rehersal show performed earlier that afternoon (just in case there were technical glitches with the live broadcast in the evening, RTE would have something to give to their broadcast partners throughout Europe!). He gave a few tickets to the rehersal to family members, including myself and my mum. Yes, I was one of the few who saw Riverdance - live - before nearly everyone else. Later that day, meeting up with friends and classmates, I told them, they can miss the songs on the broadcast that evening, but DON'T miss the interval act! Intrigued, most agreed - those that did, thanked me big time at school the following Monday morning.
That must have been phenomenal. I watched it on TV, the hairs went up on the back of my neck and didn't come down for a week! So to see it live the first time....wow!
Every time I see this dance routine it brings back so many memories of when Riverdance first got noticed. Michael and Jean who choreographed the dance set went on to become two of the most iconic dancers in history. Setting new stages for newer talents abroad, and from their heritage homeland of Ireland. Bill Whelan also won a grammy for his fantastic musical magic that helped propel this awesome troupe to stardom to which we have come to adore over these past twenty three years. Such a gorgeous variant of dance, songs, old Celtic poems of tragedy and the will to overcome hardship and on to hopeful dreams that has been molded into the Irish soul. Riverdance in my view has become a phenomenal influence for many young viewers as well as dancers around the world who appreciates the indelible talents of those wonderful Riverdance folk. Incredible power, energy, and beauty. Thank you so much for allowing us to dream when we see you all dance.

I just love 😍the way Jean Butler dances! She's so talented and graceful. 🥰😀 I also love her red hair. 💞 I think I've always had a "thing" for red-headed women. I noticed that when she took her bow, there was a close-up of a middle-aged couple (7:45-48) in the audience. Were they her parents?
but we have won the competition more than any other, we have had more than our fair share of the glory, there are about 20 countries than have never won, including Malta who have been trying for nearly 50 years, having said that, I don't want Sweden to match or beat our record
I don’t think it was ever appreciated at the time just how much of the music was inspired by Romanian/Macedonian folk music. The section starting at 4:34 that’s in 14/8 time is one of the best rhythms in the whole show, and it’s plainly Balkan. Odd meters are rare in celtic music, but Bill Whelan had produced an album a few years early that fused Irish and Balkan music, which he drew on when he composed Riverdance. Just in this sequence alone, the jigs move from 9/8 to 14/8 to 6/8. I always wondered how challenging it was for Jean Baltic to choreograph traditional step dances to these kinds of rhythms.
@h.d.5194 No, it's not just Irish music. Bill Whelan himself spoke about how he deliberately incorporated Balkan nations folk music styles into his Riverdance compositions as Riverdance was always intended to be a multicultural show.
Shocking how many people think he does real Irish Step Dancing. He's a huge talent, he's from Boston and....that is not classical Irish Dance. But he is talented. Sincerely hope he got that illness straightened out.
there is no such thing as classical irish dance ( i guess you could say there is technical irish dance and he is deffinitely NOT a technical dancer ) there are various styles of sean nos and the commissioned style he danced the comissioned style from the waist down the only difference is he moves his arms which wouldn't be allowed in competition because it allows greater jumps in height that dont come from the strength in the legs as you see also when he came out in the leap overs his leading leg was bent ..which is awful for a professional dancer and indicates weakness and poor training ...the holding your arms out gives balast and counterweight ..most irish dancers can get the height he does without using the upper body and its considered cheating to use the arms ....or course with this charisma which cant be taught ..he gets away with it... but his over downs and leap overs were never i guess 'classical' as you say. colin was FAR the better dancer they SHOULD look like this with the knee completely straight and hands not helping but by your side. czcams.com/video/O60DLAEYEnU/video.html ... the hands in the air thing wasn't a rebel move it was a cheating one ;) But on the other hand you could look at it this way those who embrace every part of themselves have no flaws ... he embraced who he was as a dancer and therefore he was perfect. a good dancer is not the one that is technically correct ...and can do all the tricks or the best leapovers (though colins leapovers were amazing with or without hands) .. its about knowing oneself and embracing it. That is what made flatley good he knew he had charisma.
You might be surprised to learn that Jean Butler hated Michael Flatley. She was probably jealous because he was the better dancer (well, he does actually have Irish blood, so it’s to be expected). That’s why her performance and facial expressions are so stiff and lifeless.
@@EditorOfSL She felt no connection to Flately. He was only ever about himself. He wasn't really interested in Jean and himself as a pair, as a partnership. She also felt that Colin Dunne was a better dancer and that Colin's performances were always about Jean and Colin as a partnership.
I am half Irish and half Italian. I never identified with my Irish heritage or felt much pride in it - until Riverdance. And is Michael Flatley not one of the most gorgeous men who ever lived? He doesn't even look like a real person. He looks like a painting of a handsome man.
I read because of the type of flooring on the stage the sound didn't carry so they had to pre-record the tap dance sounds. Of course this takes nothing away from the performance. The dancer's synchronization (toe-syncing?) was flawless.
Brilliant! Used to watch the Eurovision on a regular basis. This routine was better than some of the contestants. Unfortunately it has got so you don't see half the acts before the show, so how can Europe on the whole judge?. Not everyone uses the interweb!. I can use u tube but after that!
1994 Eurovision.... no-one remembers the winner, but EVERYONE remembers RIVERDANCE!! Unforgettable.

I love that top the female announcer has on. 💕
Sooooooo good
I just love 😍the way Jean Butler dances! She's so talented and graceful. 🥰😀 I also love her red hair. 💞 I think I've always had a "thing" for red-headed women.
I noticed that when she took her bow, there was a close-up of a middle-aged couple (7:45-48) in the audience. Were they her parents?
No, that was the President of Ireland (at the time) Mary Robinson, and her husband Nick.
Hermoso Baile... lo ame.
Il fatto che siamo ancora qui a guardare il filmato dopo 30 anni vorra'dire qualcosa,no ?
I'm part Irish..made me proud.
Look at how scuffed the floor looks after the performance! Lol
Jean God what a fresh faced young dancer along with Michael Flatley memories come flowing back.
I know right, and Gerry Ryan looked so young there too!
When Ireland ruled Eurovision :)
When it ruled the world !

Just can't get enough off it. Keep watching it over and over . Today; 26-12-2020. Yes indeed : It's still Christmas !
geniales
Until Ireland has the guts to go back to our culture for our song entries, we'll never win Eurovision again. I said it.
but we have won the competition more than any other, we have had more than our fair share of the glory, there are about 20 countries than have never won, including Malta who have been trying for nearly 50 years, having said that, I don't want Sweden to match or beat our record
This is just Irish music though
@h.d.5194 No, it's not just Irish music. Bill Whelan himself spoke about how he deliberately incorporated Balkan nations folk music styles into his Riverdance compositions as Riverdance was always intended to be a multicultural show.
There should be a riverdance version of the Swan Lake, if there isn't already. ;-)
indeed
I don't care who they have in the lead role, there will never be another Jean and Michael
Cancer and pisces the water signs ❤️
You might be surprised to learn that Jean Butler hated Michael Flatley. She was probably jealous because he was the better dancer (well, he does actually have Irish blood, so it’s to be expected). That’s why her performance and facial expressions are so stiff and lifeless.
@@EditorOfSL She felt no connection to Flately. He was only ever about himself. He wasn't really interested in Jean and himself as a pair, as a partnership. She also felt that Colin Dunne was a better dancer and that Colin's performances were always about Jean and Colin as a partnership.
@@ItsmeeSaoirse Oof. How do you know this? Has she written a book? Heard things over the years that he's got a big head or whatever.
Who is the Pisces,is Jean Butler a Pisces like me or is it Micheal?.
I am half Irish and half Italian. I never identified with my Irish heritage or felt much pride in it - until Riverdance. And is Michael Flatley not one of the most gorgeous men who ever lived? He doesn't even look like a real person. He looks like a painting of a handsome man.
Curiosity got the cat. Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan won the vote. This won the night!
Can’t stop watching jean butlers legs.
There perfect.
Y desde entonces la Danza Irlandesa no fue la misma, conquistado el mundo entero.
Who was the singer who introduced the number?
