  • This is video of the TTC's 1985 Flyer D901 #6049. The date on this video is December 9, 2005. This is essentially a video of what Toronto, particularly Scarborough is like on a normal chaotic snow day. The Route is 129A McCowan North, this route goes from Scarobourgh Town all the way into Markham meaning this bus has a long journey ahead of it since the roads are all clogged up everywhere. The bus itself retired very shortly after.

    This is why an articulated bus pops up on 129 to end crushloads. It was nice riding this route with this, Fishbowls and the Orion V.

    I'm glad I don't have to go through the 129 crush load, ever since they introduced 199.

    Actually its too late for the Flyers, for most of them the frame has rotted. Also unlike the more common GM New Look the Flyer D901 doesn't have very many common parts with its successors making it expensive to rebuild. It was said that the 12 year rebuild for these buses was the most expensive rebuild of all TTC buses. Despite my disliking them, the Orion VII will last to roughly 18 years since Orion's warranty covers them up to that point.

    Orions and New Flyers suffer from the same faults. Frame corrosion is common because both makers use carbon steel construction for their frames. Only lately stainless steel frames are now an option, Novabus actually was first. Orion followed with the Orion VII, New Flyer only offers stainless steel recently since they were rejected from the TTC tender due to their insistance on carbon steel construction the TTC had so much trouble with on previous New Flyers.

    Possibly since this was the last time anyone saw it. It was definitely off the roster by 2006.

    Was this video recorded in June? Because I see snow on the ground in this video.

    It has stopped because my camera's video function is no longer working properly. The most I can get is 1 second clips which is pointless since I might aswell snap a photo which still works but not like it used to. The New York MTA clip in my selection was when the video function started failing. I do not have $500 for another camera, so videos are on an indefinate hold.

    It has already been partly contracted out to wheelchair accessible taxis.

    The GMs could be fitted with a wheelchair lift however that would require modification as the current TTC GMs would need wider doors. Fitting old buses with lifts is not a very attractive option especially when presented to the politicians, and they don't care if the GMs have been the backbone of the TTC for near 40 years.

    I'll replay individually to each section. It won't be just the frames, the Flyers are actually alive this long mainly due to them being rush hour only buses. They no have enough service life left in them to serve very long. Rebuilding these Flyers are expensive, if the TTC was forced to do another rebuild the better New Looks and the Classics would go through. The D901s and the D40s wouldn't survive.

    That would be when the government of Ontario did have ownership of Orion buses. Many projects were done because of the government, the TTC either had the choice of going with it or not going with it and losing subsidy. Today Orion is a Daimler Chrysler company and the Ontario government could care less the TTC buys New Flyer or Novabus so long as its accessible and low floor.

    Wheeltrans operating costs is an expensive. The durability of the Ford Overland ELFs is 7-8 years maybe even less. The Orion II is out of production so there isn't a very good option left. The idea with making the whole system accessible is to leave wheeltrans for users who are too far away to access the system.

    The GM New Look is a 48 year old design, it is not suitable for production today and would retire extensive engineering work to make it low floor. Upgrading the Classic design would be the only way to get a low floor version of an New Look type bus. New York MTA was picky with low floor regarding New Flyers, apparently the VII is fine with them whether thats because of state politics I don't know, they're fine here thats all I know.

    The 1997 Orion VIs would actually still be in service had they not been powered by natural gas and we designed so they could be converted to diesel, there is technically nothing wrong with them. If you want to blame their retirement on anything blame Cummins for their natural gas engine design. All fleets in Ontario will be low floor, the government wants all buses to be low floor and wheelchair accessible by I believe 2012.

  • @JeganV
    @JeganV  Před 17 lety

    Safety standards would render the GM design obsolete. Even if a company tries to build a new one much engineering work will have to be done and wouldn't be worth it for a near 50 year old design.

    Transit systems in Canada all run at a loss, there is no way any of them are capable of funding even the creation of a bus company. This would require provincial governments to fund a unified initiative which is difficult enough with political bickering amongst themselves. With a lousy federal government that has no interest in the average person this won't happen.
