Outside of Wembanyama, Markkanen is the rarest player archetype. 7ft with 50/40/90 splits on high volume. His stats and advanced stats are in line with 4th year Dirk. He's not Dirk, but he's really close.
Vassell is much easier to replace. A 6'4" guard with league average splits. I love Devin, we all do, but his stats for a 22 win team are equivalent to Cam Thomas. I'd trade Cam Thomas for 90% Dirk anyday
Devin Vassell is also super young. He’s an all star talent.

Dude is good but hasn’t even played a full season …plus I agree with Clan, Lauri doesn’t make us a serious contender against a team like the thunder who is gonna be a monster for years to come (example)…. We need to develop players n Next year the draft is gonna be real nice too. We can wait for another free agency pool and tbh another year in general …. Patience fellow spurs fans, we must do this right to be a serious juggernaut of a team (which we can with Wemby) for years going forward.
Exactly. Media and some fans want to rush. I say chill and let this year develop and see what happens in next yr’s draft. Then we make major decisions then. I dont want to just win now. I want to win now and win more. People praising okc for there slow rebuild and how they have laid the blueprint for the perfect rebuild and then want the spurs to rush it? Make it make sense. Im thankful for our team landing a generational talent but sometimes i think its just people wanting Wemby to win so that they can control the narrative about who is the best this and that. Its just all for narrative. Does not matter where Wemby plays as long as he wins. From a media standpoint it seems like the spurs are just hindering what they want to put out there. @@El_Baka couldn’t agree more, of all the teams in the west OKC are the real ones to contend with because of their longevity and the fact they still have so much leverage going forward with picks even though they just won the #1 seed in the west last year, all while being one of the youngest teams oh and having an MVP type player in SGA to top it off …. I believe the spurs know what they are doing but the fact we’re even interested in Lauri supposedly is concerning when we should be insuring we get high draft picks in next years draft with the picks we got coming. We just need to chill out

Next yr’s draft and how evrything plays out in the league then is so vital to our future i think. Maybe the spurs are just trying to see if they can finesse the jazz for lauri. Probably just that. If they were really serious, knowing how Danny Ainge operates with wanting picks and all, this deal would have been done already. Only 2 teams in the league have a war chest of picks - okc and sa. So for this deal not to get done yet says something i think. But hey will just have to see what happens.

This does make me wonder if Utah is interested in having another Minnesota pick and that’s why the Spurs chose to trade Dillingham there specifically, to have an extra asset that Utah would value highly

I would say proceed with caution. As long as it is not a blatant overpay, given Chris Paul's pass-first nature to feed Lauri Markkanen and Victor Wembanyama and find then in each of their spots, the idea of acquiring Lauri Markkanen makes sense for the Spurs.

I’d rather have a big man at center instead and move Wemby to the 4 on defense. And if, IF, that same center can catch and shoot 3’s, I think that would fit better. I know there’s not a lot of big bodied centers who that can move their feet and hit the 3. But if they can find an archetype like that it would be scary to put next to Wemby.

Dude they ain't delusional. You are sir. Lauri will go for at least 4 firsts. That's how the nba works. 1st round picks are dart throws. It's not like the nfl. Even in a loaded class anything after the 8th-10th pick has very little chance of returning value.
Lauri on the Spurs would be very interesting. You need to think of him as a really, really good role player. His highlight reels are almost literally nothing but lobs and threes. He does not create his own offense. He's an okay rebounder and rim protector for a power forward, too.
Thus, his fit next to Vic could be unreal. Wemby draws such an insane amount of attention on offense that putting Lauri out there next to him would force them to choose between throwing two big guys at Vic or trying to play straight up, either of which sucks for opponents. Also, Lauri does not need the ball in his hands to be effective on offense. He does not bring the ball up. He doesn't go 1-on-1. He runs off of screens or capitalizes on the need for his defender to guard the paint to get open looks. In contrast, Vic does all of those things he doesn't do.
This could open up an aspect of Vic's game that doesn't get talked about enough: his passing. Wemby is such an underrated distributor. Now imagine if he, at 7'4", had a lob/bomb threat on his team that was 7'0". There's no way to guard that.
At that point, the Spurs just need to add a pass-first point guard who's very good at defense. Heck, they don't even need to shoot that well, because Vic and Lauri stretch the floor so well. Depending on how Stephon develops, the Spurs might have already drafted that exact player.
With all that said, the Spurs are basically the same team they were last year. CP3 will only play 20-24 minutes and will inevitably be injured a quarter of the season. Stephon Castle is a much, much better defender than Tre Jones but is also a much, much worse shooter (somehow). Essentially, the Spurs could easily wind up with a top 5 pick again next season, and 2025's draft looks *stacked.*

I said it as soon as I saw the dilly trade that those pick might end up in Utah. They are super interested in the picks since they have all the other wolves pick from the gobert trade.
big thing is if we trade for Markannen it'll be 6 months until we can sign him to an extension, HUGE risk to have to wait that long when you could just lose him at the end of the year especially with the price you know Danny Ainge will be asking for him despite him being an expiring deal.
suuuper risky to give up a heap of draft assets to then potentially lose him a year later for nothing.
We have all the picks, in the next 2-3 years we'll be able to land someone as talented with a much smaller price tag

Respectfully, why would we try for someone who is 7 years older than our Centerpiece in Wembanyama so he doesn't even remotely fit our timeline? They are probably just saying they're interested to raise their asking price and hamstringing whatever team ends up trading for him. We own the hawks pick next year which 7:24 we will use to fill our PF position. Lauri has also never even had a season where he has shown up for 70 games, only 55 lastyear. Absolutely not. Yall are tripping if you want this
Danny Ainge is going to want a Mikal Bridges type deal. A reasonable type deal would be closer to DJ Murray's trade package. The Spurs should not be desperate to give the Jazz a big haul. The GSW probably need him more to try keep there championship window open a little longer.
I wonder how Lauri Markannen would fit. On that same coin what role will CP3 be playing?Will he start? Will he be the first man or second man off of the bench? If Chris Paul starts, what does that mean for Castle? If we put Castle at the 3 and CP3 at the one, what about Sochan? Does he take a 6th man spot? If Keldon stays on the team what is his role? He’s to good to be a deep bench player. I’m guessing with a trade of Keldon Johnson where we get Lauri the roster would have to be:
PG: Stephon Castle
SG: Devin Vassell
SF: Lauri Markannan
PF: Sochan
C: Wemby
CP3 first man off the bench giving Stephon Castle time to adjust to NBA speed.

This is a no brainer by the Spurs.
We have the draft capital and the prospects to get it done. There’s no reason to be greedy or hoard your draft capital. What’s crazy is we can trade 4 1st round picks and still have 10 first round picks left until 2030. We’re basically given Utah a better chance at landing Cooper Flagg and sending them into a full rebuild. Don’t get me wrong I would love to get Flagg, but that’s not a guarantee. What would be a Guarantee is an established Star in the league that would excel in our System. I for one would love this pick up by the Spurs, but it might not be the popular choice because it seems as if there’s a good chunk of our fandom that wants to hold our draft picks to the chest and not make a trade. Making this trade will help the team get better.

He won't be cheap and he's often injured... His profile is certainly a nice fit, but it's too risky, in my opinion.
Y would Utah want a long term deal like Vassell anyway? If anything I thing they would want short term non guaranteed contracts.
My offer is Graham, Collins, Wesley, Charlotte + Chicago picks, swaps in 26, 28 and 30, unprotected Spurs pick in 27 and 4 2nds for Lauri and Clarkson
It is very tempting to get Lauri but not at the expense of the 2025 draft. It is too star studded and deep and we could have a possible 4 picks in the 1st round.

Well just last season Dallas wins game 4 of the playoffs bringing their total to 3-1 Boston leads and people were so quick to say that Dallas would win in 7. No.. game 5 was a blood bath and not in our favor. I can't say that the Spurs signing Chris Paul would be the tipping point either. 🤣

I'm surprised you're so pessimistic on making playoffs. Wemby is a top 15 player in the league, should've been dpoy. Give him, sochan, vassell, another summer of development. Add cp as a floor general. I think spurs make playoffs next year already, not to mention once they add another piece like it looks like they're obviously about to do.

Let’s be honest the Spurs cannot be trusted with multiple draft lottery picks anyway so what’s the big deal if they trade one. if they got the top two picks next year they would trade one of the pics for a 2035 first rounder to the Boston Celtics
Unless we sign how exactly are we going to get him he’s not a type a player that we should be trading for nor are we in the current position where we would NEED him at the current moment. If we can get him with low risk then it’s fine, but other than that it’s no purpose right now.

If they do not do this, they have to do something. If not this offseason is a failure. These picks other than a couple of them are not worth near what you think. They cannot hold on to all of these picks. This is year 3 with all of these picks and they have done nothing. This is the season to make on move to move them to at least a playoff (play in) team. Waiting another year to see what they have is a major waste. This time next year Wembys contract is half over. You have to start now with at least one meaningful move.
I disagree about this season being an evaluation season. I could see the Spurs going slightly over what they’re comfortable with. If they’re not competing for a championship by Wemby’s 3rd season, he’s gone. Too many teams that would be serious championship contenders with the addition of Wemby. Spurs are known to the slow process and Wemby isn’t about that.
