As for the OP they need to tell their manager, job, Police and family to be on alert because it is no laughing matter. The guy in story 2 sounds like a total creep. I would definitely go to the police to at least get it on record in case an incident like that happens again and possibly get a lawyer for making threats against you because chances are that he most likely said it while being recorded
Depending on what state this person lives in it doesn't matter because some states are a one party meaning that only one person needs consent to record so nothing can be done

And if they question “why are you recording him, this is confirming the rumors”, just ask “so if he records me and brings me a whole STACK of our messages it’s fine, but if I record him as evidence, that’s the problem?” That recording alone disproves all of his lies, and puts him in a bad light that he rightfully deserves.
Story 3 is a bit of an odd one. Commentator acknowledges that Japan is known for being hard-working (not exactly true, but yes they have long days and taking days off is frowned upon) but does not acknowledge that the way the OPs husband uses the app is actually a very common thing (as is cheating) in Japan. It absolutely is not an excuse, and the OPs husband needs to communicate with the OP a lot better (which is not something the Japanese are very good at overall) so that these kinds of incidents don't happen again or escalate.
Yeah, the fact that he just left his phone with her unlocked would imply that he didn't feel like he was doing anything that he needed to keep hidden. The way she described his reaction to her being upset, seems like he was more surprised than anything. I've never been to Japan and don't know anyone from there, but these kinds of stories always have me looking for a cultural disconnect that needs to be considered and communicated about before jumping to conclusions. Also, as far wanting validation when he didn't have a picture on it, that doesn't seem that weird to me. He knows his looks weren't the only thing she found attractive about him. And being with someone who stands out to everyone you meet has to be a bit daunting. I don't think either of these people are assholes, they just need to take more time to communicate and be open with each other. His taking time off to do that would suggest that she really is very important to him.

If memory serves, you really only have a case if damages happen and you can prove that it was caused by another individual spreading lies and I believe it has to be done with malicious intent for you to actually win defamation. That's how I understand how defamation works.
I think it's a third-story, that couple needs maybe some marriage counseling. Or the husband needs therapy. No it doesn't excuse his actions but I'm pretty sure if the husband actually communicated more with his wife, then things like this wouldn't happen. And if you take it at face value, there is the possibility that the husband genuinely felt inferior to his wife and was wondering why he even ended up with her in the first place because I know what that feels like. In story 2 you aren't the jerk in the slightest If you don't consent to being recorded then you need to end things right then and there or call the police
You don't need both peoples permission in a one party consent state. The cops can't do anything about that.

what a stupid comment. he handed her his phone himself and its normal to want to go through your spouse's phone if given the chance. you dont really have privacy when youre married, especially if you hand your phone to your wife
