- Straw Bale House Build Day 15: Bale Stacking Continues!
It's time to continue stacking bales. in this video we work on the third of four courses of bales needed to achieve the needed height for our#strawbalehouse. We also explain how we split bales.

Chloe is adorable! She reminds me of our Chloe, nothing better than a nap in the sun while waiting on her staff to have time to give her love! Nice demo on the strapping tool, not everyone knows how those work.
Good to see the boss is back and cracking the whip!! Nice progress once again. 👍🏼
She's tough but fair. And one of her special abilities is sleeping with one eye open. 🤣
Great commentary editing and workmanship awesome couple.
Thank you 🙏
You both work together like a well oiled machine. Nice work!
We've certainly had enough practice. When I first met Yvonne, she was helping me renovate an 1880's townhouse in Germany. When I saw her plaster a wall and hang wallpaper I just knew she was the one! Thanks for watching and stirring up some really fond old memories.❤️
best strawbale construction ive ever came across! Congratulations for that beautiful job!
Thank you very much!
Well thought out.
Looks like a small A/C unit will keep it comfortable during the long AZ Summer.
That is exactly what we are shooting for. Along with a few well placed ceiling fans. Then a wood stove for the colder months. We do have a lot of fuel right here on the property.
I'm really enjoying your house build. I can't wait for the next episode.
Thanks for watching! Next video is in the editing phase right now👍
Super, wie Ihr zwei das zusammen macht 👍👍👍☺
Das geht schon wie geschmiert 😉😀 Vielen Dank liebe Mami! 😘
Looking good folks! Now come the fun part! Stay safe and have a great week!
Thanks CB. Yvonne is heading out on vacation for about 10 days...you know how that is. We'll see what I can get accomplished around here by myself. 😉Have a great week!
Those walls are going up quick! Why are we doing earthbag again?😆
Great job y'all!
Thanks Jim!
Thanks for being the inspiration for us "old guys"
My pleasure! One day I'll video tape myself early mornings, so stiff that getting my socks on is the biggest challenge of the day. 🤣
@@theupsideofdownsizing welcome to my world. When working on my skoolie remodel this spring there were some mornings that I needed a three advil breakfast cocktail.
Lol🤣👍
And “old gals” 😀 ... it’s hard to give myself excuses when I watch folks like you two
👍❤️
Good choice of music for the Dog Sleep break! Keep creating this great content!
Thanks, I'm going to do my best to chronicle the entire build...with an occasional video about other things that are happening here or that I am interested in. Thanks for watching!
Its a dogs life. I might come back as a dog.👍
Yvonne says that all the time! 🤣
Excellent video. Lot to learn
Ah... a baling needle. I must have missed that before. I was wondering how you managed to get the strap around the split bales without it all falling apart. Cool. Thanks for the detailed info - I may never build with straw but it’s fascinating to watch and learn!
Thanks for watching! The next video will cover splitting a bale in a bit more detail. 👍
Nice job. Good quality bales, well compacted.
Thanks. You're right, they are very dense and well baled. They were perhaps a couple dollars more than others we looked at, but worth every penny.
Oh man, it's really moving, and looks great!
You two are my hero's, that's for sure.
Of course, the videos are never long enough for me. Could watch you all day. It's like seeing old friends again, but only for a short visit.
Until next time...
❤️☀️🌵⛈️🌈☮️🐎
Thanks Laurie! When I promised to try to make 2 videos per week, I knew the overall length might go down a bit. But, we are moving right along and will document every step to the best of my ability.

I'm sure I can speak for most folks when I say, I really do appreciate the work it takes to share this with us. Building a home, by yourselves, and documenting it, is a lot.
cant wait for the roof and stucco
You and me both. Next video we will be discussing our roof options. Should be interesting. Looking forward to having the house dried in. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I am looking forward to the next one
Thank you! Next episode is in the editing phase right now!
A really well made video. Your composition of the shots was terrific. We could see all of the elements of the build process. This is really a how to msnual for other builders. A super build and I look forward to each step. Thank you!
Wow, thank you so much! I can only hope to live up to your high praise with future videos. 🙏
Always great stuff
Thanks 👍

Impressive!
Thanks Mark!
Coming along nicely. Chloe is so cute 😊
Thanks Pam.... she's a cutie alright.😀
Hurry up and make it look like we have been working before mom gets home! LOL!
Wow looks amazing! You’re doing a great job!
Thanks Kara!
I'm very curious as to how you will do the top (roof) assembly once you have done the fourth row. Way to go guys.
Anthony
That will be the subject of Episode 17. We have some exciting options from which to choose. Thanks for watching!
Bill, Elaine, kudos to you. I think the measure of a good you tube video is if it inspires the viewer. You two do that in spades. I makes me want to come to Arizoona and start building. Thanks so much. A question... Where do you find high quality straw bales, and if you don't mind telling, how much does each bale cost, and how many are needed foor a house your size?
Thank you Gomer. We appreciate your kind words. We bought locally sourced bales through a local Feed and Supply store. We purchased 125 bales but that will most certainly be about 20 more than we actually need. Luckily Yvonne has a straw bales garden which will most certainly increase in size next season. We did get a volume discount and paid $9 per bale. ( Regular price was, at the time of purchase $11 per bale. ) These are 3 string bales which are larger than 2 string bales, and are very dense and there by heavy. Here is a link to our video about buying our straw.

Thanks for all the great instruction and explanation. btw ... i picked up the straw bale book you recommended, good info as i'll be building mine in the northeast and their example is in the same area of the country ... thanks again.
Glad to hear that book might be of help. It has been very helpful for us. Thanks for watching and good luck with your build! 👍
Looking good! 🎄Merry Christmas you two!
Thank you and to you as well 🎄
👍👍👍👍👍🌷
When using vampire stakes , could a person cut the slots in the bale's as they are being placed and after making the wall as high as the rough bucks, drive a full length stake , would that provide a stronger anchor?
👍🙂
It's looking great, I'm planning on building my strawbale house soon but I'm still deciding between making a timber frame or load bearing because I would like to have a second floor. Can I ask you how much money you think you will spend with this construction. Thank you and continue with the great work
We had originally planned for spending somewhere around 30k. With the current price of lumber I would have to raise that to 35-40k. Now please understand, that's a rough estimate because anyone who knows me or has been following us for any length of time will know that I do NOT save receipts or keep a running total of expenses. Your mileage may vary😉
I'm concerned, what if "the wolf" comes by ???? :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I thought the same thing when the 20 mph winds were huffing and puffing a few days ago. 😀

Have you got your whole strawbale build on your channel ? I've looked and can't find it.
I’m noticing you’re not strapping from the bottom to the top. Are the pins taking the place of the straps to tie the bales together vertically?
You're getting ahead of me...next video will address this question. But not to keep you in suspense, the rebar pinning does add much lateral stability to the wall. It does not replace but works in conjunction with the strapping. Next video in a day or so. Thanks for your continued support!
i have a question for ya,,im thinking about building a straw building,,im just wondering the way you guys are placing your bales,r value compared to laying them flat, being thicker walls,,just wondering about the r value thing,,,and looking good keep up the good work,,,there's a good chance im gonna be flowing your lead
Thanks for watching. Laying the bales flat would increase the r value from what we are getting, r 26 to r 35. In our climate zone, R26 is more than enough to assure great thermal properties. But, I am sure there are regions in the US and around the world where R35 would be a better choice. By standing the bales on edge like we do, we are using about 30% fewer bales. If we were to go higher than 4 courses, laying the bales flat would be a better choice for added stability.
Lb oogie boogie , heat and cold travel down the length of the straw more easily than across, so the way you see here has a higher r-value per inch than a bale laid flat , but as the bale is wider than high the r-value of the wall ends up being about equal with the flat laid bale wall
How many bales of hay did you use to build your house and what is the square feet of the house
We used about 100 bales and the footprint of the house is 24x40 feet.
I was wondering if when you guys are stacking the bails we can hear your chipmunk talking but can’t tell if it’s German or English. Do you switch back and forth sometimes?
We speak mostly English with each other, but do hit situations where German is just easier. I try to leave some original sound in the fast motion portions of the videos when things like hammering or tamping make it more interesting.
