We decided to create an old time-y, Great Gatsby cover version of Macklemore's "Thrift Shop"...I suppose one might even call it the vintage thrift shop version of "Thrift Shop"....

Scott's Book: smarturl.it/outsidethejukebox - Hudba
it's incredible how she can sing all that without skipping a beat or stopping.
now THAT'S talent.
Becca
Well i mean she has to pause to breathe but apart from that yeah
She must breathe through her ears, or else inside she is just lungs, lol.
You wanna see incredible, look at Von Smith do this same song.
czcams.com/video/sdG8znVcfdc/video.html
She does a Lose Yourself cover that made me think the same thing
That's practce
I love how the drummer is watching every one else while he plays from muscle memory, the bassist looks like he's having shower thoughts, and Scot's like "Damn watch my hands, they bounce!"
All joking aside, a fantastic cover though.
I can see a song about choosing a thrift shop instead of spending money on expensive clothes fitting well in a time period like the Great Depression.
I know right, except maybe the cursing, this would fit right in with that time period.
John Appleseed
In this particular version there is no cursing
Of course, $20 in your pocket was a lot more money back then ...
Oooohhh you mean like 2020?
When does she breathe?
Berel Dov Lerner breathing is overrated
She doesn’t
If you're curious, you can hear really soft "gasps" at the ends of some sentences. If you're in choir, you know this a bit easier, though that doesn't mean anything against her. She still does REALLY good at pulling lots of air from her diaphragm so quickly.
Breathing is for the weak
@RBodisch Music r u serious
How can these guys rock not swearing, but kidzbop makes me cry when they try?
Because kids bop has kids who can't sing well and try to make the non swearing appeal to kids but it's like your mom saying lol or something. These people make it sound natural and understand how to music.
Because these people know how to change the song to make the lyrics still appropriate to the song without profanity.
Radioactiv Pi 5 words kidzbop well, they are kidzbob
Radioactiv Pi They do swear though, like a lot.
Radioactiv Pi Hey, the kidzbop version is not as bad as their old covers.
Unlike the original, this cover:
1) actually took my grandpa's style and
2) was freakin' awesome.
How does AI #1
BAG IT
PMJ’s goal:
To confuse future historians
Almost 4 years later and still one of the best things I've ever heard. This is how I know the lyrics for the original song.
yeah now almost 8 years
It is now 8 year and still amazing
9 years lol
Ten years! 😄
I hated thrift shop...until i heard this version! I wish you were coming to Adelaide, Australia.
Susan Duggin We're FINALLY coming to Australia in a few weeks! Tix here: www.pmjlive.com
10 Sep - HQ Complex, Adelaide, Australia
PostmodernJukebox omg I am so excited!!! omg omg omg
+Susan Duggin i love original version, but i like this version too.
+PostmodernJukebox
aaaaaarg!
I just saw that you're playing in Perth at the Astor in 4 days! but tickets are already sold out!
Not sure if you've ever been to Aus before but i suspect you'll enjoy playing at the Astor! really beautiful indoor venue :)
Hope it all goes well!
+Susan Duggin "10 Sep - HQ Complex, Adelaide, Australia"
Postmodern Jukebox's version of "Thrift Shop" is definitely a tongue twister even for the skilled singer. Robyn Adele Anderson has the right sound and vintage looks to cover Macklemore & Lewis's #1 Billboard hit.
Macklemore definitely wrote a song to honor thrift shops and their importance in the 21st century to green the planet one treasure at a time. Scott Bradlee's ragtime version really rocks. Bag it!
I miss her in PMJ. Not that much attention lately. She is me favourite.
This is really where it all came together for PMJ, and put them on the map. Thanks Robyn, this still holds up!
I think I've just found my new favourite band. Yep. Definitely.
I think we all did. :)
Natasawww yup we all did
Yeeeeep.
Certainly meu amigo, hehe...
Yep
Files this under "Things I Never Knew I Needed"
Myn too
My thoughts exactly.
Also under "Things I need" right after Oxygen.
Agreed
I can’t believe it’s been TEN YEARS of Postmodern Jukebox! 😱 🤯
Can’t stop grinning while this song is playing. This makes me so happy.
HOW HAVE I NEVER KNOWN OF THIS CHANNEL?!
i know right
宮本直樹
IKR THIS AMAZING!
NickGreyden I just had the exact same thought.
I know, *right?!*
Damn. The girl's got excellent breath control
Agreed - She's a really talented vocalist.
And easy on the eyes with her dresses.
Bill Vestal I second that :P
Really miss this bassist and this drummer on their recent videos. Their mimics and the way they were looking at camera and each other were awsome !
I love the way they respectfully nod at each other :D
add some vinyl hiss and crackle and this could be right out of the past.
You can get our vinyl here! postmodernjukebox.gomerch.com/products/now-thats-what-I-call-vintage-vinyl
No 78 RPM gramophones? Disappointing.
lol
Picked it up at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts! The show was amazing!
Post modern Kate
Where have these people been all my life! Cannot get enough.
$20 would have got you a lot in the 1920s! This version is frickin awesome
How do I unlock the drum player?
LOL
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAJAHAHAHAH BEST COMMENT
Every one of their videos has this comment. Try a more original slur next time guy.
It's not a slur, I am.
I didn't think people were still copying and pasting this joke....
Holy shit?? This is definitely the inspiration to 6up 5oh by Will Wood
I HAD THE SAME THOUGHT
Exactly what i thought its so similar
Somewhere in the future somebody is struggling to understand the cultural context of this video
I love it :) I've already decided my hypothetical children will be very confused by my music choices.
Sierra Jones My hypothetical children will unconsciously add 30-40 years to my age due to musical tastes, or maybe they will do the opposite deducting 30-40 years from a bunch of artists.
Mexicans still party to songs that are about 100 years old
I don't understand what she is singing but I like it.
wet timguavass Lol, Gods damn -- that's true. Hahahah.
drummer and bass player nodding at each other. smooth operators.
This sounds so similar to 6up 5oh copout it’s insane.
Robyn is one of my favorite vocalist in PMJ.. her vintage vibe add so much fun in PMJ..
The pianist ruled it for me. Awesome!
I would not know any 'chart' music if it wasn't for Postmodern Jukebox and their funky vintage covers. Love this!
This version is really fucking AWESOME ^^!!!!
*freakin' awesome 😂😅
+Romy Philippe why did you correct him? He is correct
+Pedro Rodriguez :-> ggwp
Pedro Rodriguez in the song they change fucking to freakin' too (i'm sutch a nerd sorry)
It's 2019 and its my first time hearing this.
My initial reaction: Holy shit, How is this possible!?
It was 2020 for my first time hearing it! I feel the last 5 years have been a waste.
Songs don't need swearing to be good. The fact they could pull out a song like Thrift Shop with slighty changing the lyrics but keep the good rhythm is simply astounding.
Swearing also isn't "bad". Most people today swear freely, why shouldn't it be included in something culturally relevant like music?
Nobody's ever said that swearing is "necessary" for a song to be good. But, no matter how much someone may not like it, cusswords are a part of human language. They always have been, and they're never going away -- to even bring it up is implying an assumption that people should keep trying to avoid them over a set of Victorian-era ideals. There should never be any expectation that things are actually better without real human language in a piece of art because it causes too much pearl-clutching. Art is not art when it pretends part of the human experience simply does not exist because some are uncomfortable with being confronted with the reality of it -- if the artist feels it's appropriate and it's what they really "mean," it needs to go in. This is a cover (a really good one), in their own style, so editing it out is also fine. Worrying about the difference to the point of observing it is foolish, though.
It's okay to censor to make it palatable for some audiences, but it doesn't even bear mentioning at all. It is a neutral consideration when evaluating the cultural and artistic merit behind a work, or a cover. If you're worrying about it whatsoever, you're doing it wrong. There are plenty of children that grow up in the world with sailor-mouthed parents, by the millions, and they don't turn into axe murderers and rapists as a result. It's a non-factor.
Yet they left in the reference to R Kelly’s child pornography video in which he urinated on a 14 year old girl after having sex with her.
@@LittleSister139 because not everybody likes vulgar language just because so many people have stooped to that.
Robyn is amazing. How she manages to sing all those long intricated lyrics so fast without biting her tongue!!! A genius!
How can I unlock that drummer?
+K_The_M How? He just said that cause the drummer is in the shadow area, not to mention he's almost off the camera. In games, when you haven't unlocked things, they're sometimes shown in a barely lit area lol. I guess ur not a gamer.
+郭少祖 underrated comment!
best yt comment ever
You have to reach the end of the level, lol!
24 /7 o
Great music, great lead singer, great idea. What's truly amazing is that Post Modern Jukebox is a collective of regular musicians with various invited lead and back up singers that bring a musical variety to the whole group . PMJ's collaboration with various artists is akin to the traditional Irish folk band The Chieftains, who have hosted a myriad of well known musicians and singers over the years. I only came across this group today and have been listening to their music all morning and we're very fortunate that youtube provides this opportunity for us to hear music that otherwise we might not. Great stuff!
great info. thanks
If a piano was a shovel, Scott Bradlee could dig to China in 4 minutes. Love this song.... now. Thanks gang!
The bassist's expressions are priceless.
I saw her live, reduced me to tears. Incredible singer like I have never known before.
When you sang "bag it" I hear "baguette", I suppose it's because I'm French...
Pense a amixem
+tony fortier les baguettes vaincront
+Léa Monier exactement
Les baguettes se souviennent toujours
Rappelle toi la baguette dernière...
I love her voice!
Just come to say that too :D
I love the occasional nods between Adam (Bass) and Allen (Perc). It's a small indication of how much fun this must be to do
This formation of the band is spectacular they have to come back together I love it!!!
Baguette !!
Franck licata
😓
YAAAAS !!
🥖🥖🍷🍷
Bag it
Im french so i hear baguette
I love Robyn and Scott sooooo, much. I've never seen so much talent in two people before and I've been around a long time. I feel like they are my kids I've watched them so much.
I'd say these guys took their grandpas' style, and they are awesome
It's like a fire work display for the ears ,every video I listen to I say wow.
Lots of great singers on PMJ but Robyn Adele Anderson always makes me feel happy
you turn terrible modern "music" into art i love you!
bitch please, macklemore terrible?!??!?!? -___-
Yes, please go back to listening to Justin Bieber in your parent's basement.
jeez i wasnt saying i hate THIS song i was saying that most of their other renditions of songs are of bad songs. Im sorry i should've been more clear in that comment
well, it's your opinion. this one is awesome. both the cover and the original one
Damn you people touchy
I like how the bassist and the drummer nod to each other when they're impressed with the singer's performance :D
Robyn has it all. Such a personality -- voice is ain't shabby either. One word: exudes.
I can't get enough of this after all these years. Incredible.
Guy on the left never looks at the drums, mofo drums in his sleep
DirewolfGames I didn’t notice that. Holy crap! That’s so badass!
@@jamievenezia1617 I don't blame him . Look at what he is looking at. 😊
There's only one drum... how hard can it be?
he brushes his teeth on 2 & 4
@@johnmartin8974 Yeah, that's a great looking upright bass. Oh wait...
I don't know how I didn't know aout this band. Love these guys. I'm a new fan! I SOOOO want to dance to these guys. This song would rock the Balboa!
1:28 the piano guy nailed it 😍
Robyn 7 years ago. She was already fabulous
woww listening this f*cking awesome song in 2016. Good version
Talia S me in 2017 :)
If you're uncomfortable with swearing openly you could just say "freaking".
YO THAT IS LITERALLY THE BEST PIANIST I'VE EVER SEEN! That's crazy how he can jump like that
This is one of my favorite covers, I was raised on 40's music from my parents and Robyn nails it perfectly mixing new with old.
a few years later still one of my Favorites
Better than the original
This is just AWSOME ! :O
I'm a Thrift Shopper...this is right up my alley!
Of all the covers of Thrift Shop this is what I loved the most. Simple yet elegant.
It's funny because when my Grandpa was my age, 99 cents was actually a lot of money.
Ha! That is funny. :D
P99AT true
This _is_ fucking awesome. Hat tip: Ben Cordes.
Oh man, the die young cover is great.
Still wonderful!
Love the looks between bass and drummer guy
Favorite part: 'Bag it'
When you think about it, you guys really did take my Grandpa's style, and applied it to Macklemore's song. This is the definition of a hand-me-down thrift shop song.
Out of all the amazing talent involved with PMJ, no one truly brings the authentic vintage style like Robyn does
She sings in level professional way, I love it! It shows the old music can be continued over and over again...
"No way" was my first reaction when I saw this thumbnail video for "Thrift Shop" as played by Scott's Postmodern Jukebox. Very impressive - Keep on playin' and all that jazz.
This sounds exactly like 6up 5oh cop out
These men on instruments are KILLING IT!!! They are awesome! And the main vocaloid as always - amazing too!
I just love the sound and feel of this music.
Estupendos músicos y cantantes, fabulosos estilo, me encanta.
What a change in quality (vid and scene) between the newer PMJB videos and these older ones. Music is still great no matter which year you look at, though.
What an amazing memory this gal has...all those difficult lyrics, wow!
The bass and snere... awsome!
It is so amazing to listen to new songs done in old styles.
Как же это божественно!!!
Translation: How divine!!!
Always PMJ's music cheer me up. They're for sure an astonishing. Blessings.
Isn’t it great to listen and watch genuine artistry and true talent. Gifted- keep playing x
this is freaking awesome
So class, Much song.
Great job!
2019, anyone? Still one of their best covers
Just discovered PMJ in 2020. Now I can't wait for things to open up so I can find them on tour!
This is definitely my favorite cover of this song
Can't stop listening to you guys... you're freakin' awesome!!!
You mean, "this is freakin' awesome" hahaha
love the vibe
This is freaking awesome is right. Reading Scott's book right now. So cool to read about how this all came together with this being one of the first videos to really explode. PMJ is amazing.
Hmmm... this was done with 1-take... no autotune. no over-the-top singing, no explosions or fire, no Delorean... how refreshing!
Потрясающий, "увлекающий" голос! Музыка стилизованная под ретро, но как шикарно звучит! Молодцы. :)
You guys are amazing, I listen yo you often. Thanks for the great music.I
Robyn's singing and swagger in this song is unreal. Scott went hard on the keys.
Late to the party here but I'm going to venture to say that this was one of the more difficult renditions for Robyn to undertake to date and she did a great job. There are so many opportunities to be slightly sharp of flat and she handles each change very well. Another great arrangement by Scott!
$20? Could have bought the whole store with that.
It's funny because it is real
She's excellent.....I love the emphasis she puts into the words of the song
Love it!!! And you Ms. Robyn Adele Anderson are awesome and beautiful...💘
