Poison Oak - Basic Identification

  • There is a ton of Poison Oak where I hike and spend time in nature. Today, while out hiking I came across some and decided to do a quick video. Poison Oak causes severe rashes for people who are allergic to it. Some people even have breathing issues if they come in contact with Poison Oak.
    Once you get the hang of it, identifying Poison Oak is actually quite easy. Just remember, the leaves are Oak like in appearance and they come in clusters of 3. The plant can grow like a ground cover, vine, or shrub. Leaves will change color in the fall as well.
    Early on, I taught my kids how to identify Poison Oak and I recommend that you do the same, especially if they spend much time out in nature, in areas where Poison Oak is present.

    When my mom was young she went hiking on the coast and found a family from the east coast. They had Poison oak in their fire, had padded their bedding with it and were using sticks from poison oak to cook the dinner they were halfway through eating. Luckily they got to the hospital and were okay but it could have been really bad had they not. Good thing to point out for people.

    Great video! Poison Oak and Poison Ivy are a little different looking, but both are identified by the "leaves of three". They both cause the same nasty rash which is an allergic reaction to urushiol oil that occurs naturally on these plants. Where you are in the country will determine which one you run into (we are lucky enough to have both in the southeast). The one I have a harder time identifying is Poison Sumac which looks completely different but produces the same urushiol oil and causes the same damn rash.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah the sumac has a compound leaf as well, but I think 5-7 leaflets from what I recall. I try to be aware of which trails have it thick because even in the winter the Poison Oak twigs still have some of the oil on them and if you handle the twigs you can get a reaction. Thanks for watching!

      Yes and they say they have no oak in pa! It’s so not true. I’ve grown up with oak around my entire life and ivy both. As kids there was more oak in our yard the ivy at one point. Recently I started taking photos to prove it. I even went so far to touch it for myself to prove the rash feels and looks different as well. They are so similar but their leaves are the ways to tell them apart. I can’t show my oak photos on here but oaks edges are slightly different from ivys especially the bottom leaf

      I know when I get ivy and for me it’s a pain and the butt cuz it’s soo but itchy and it spread everywhere but after all these three plants are just allergies and everyone reacts differently to each one but I have gotten all three all my life and ivy gets me the worst and I know it when I get it. I also know oak, oak is short lived rash for me and so is sumac

    Another great vid Chris! Here in the Upper Midwest we have P Ivy, Oak & Sumac. I'm highly sensitized to the Ivy - to the point I have a standing order for Prednisone Rx with the primary care. It's that awful - for like 30 days without treatment. Anyway, the similarities between the Ivy & Oak are interesting: leaves of 3; the red leaf coloration - esp with Ivy come fall when the nites cool down; plus the Ivy leaves develop sort of a blistering. But like others have said, avoidance is best, for those sensitized to the Urushiol, very unpleasant.

    Leaves of three, let them be. I have a pretty bad case. Didn’t touch poison oak, but my dog did ! For several days I went nearly bonkers trying to figure out what was biting me. Finally went to doctor who quickly recognized the blisters on my arms and neck. She asked about my dog and how I held her. My dog had the oil on her coat which spread to me when I cuddled her. Terrible pain and itching. Very little sleep and hard.

    Shaky Cam!
    Poison oak ruined my Northern California childhood summers. I got it, and got it bad. I looked like something out of a horror film. Even when I could avoid it, my less sensitive siblings and our pets would bring it back with them and spread the invisible oil everywhere. What was I gonna do, live in a bubble? The stuff is EVERYWHERE for hundreds of miles up and down the coast, on every trail, and from ocean to the hills.
    THAT is why I as an adult I do my hiking at 5000 ft. and above. I hate poison oak.

    I have a question. Does poison oak usually have yellow bubbles in the rash? I recently went camping, and I think I might have ran into some poison oak, because I saw those leaves that look like they had a red on the top. They were all around the campsite. And now I have rashes and they have yellow bubbles. The reason why I know this is probably poison oak, is because all of the symptoms you were talking about in this video are true to me, and because I slept in a shelter for one night. We had to make the shelters out of resources around. Not fun.

    It’s crazy cuz we grew up as kids with poison oak and ivy in our yard our entire life! Now that I’m an adult they say there is no poison oak in pa. Very not true, and I even took pictures of the poison oak in my back yard. I get a rash from it. Poison oak rash is different then poison ivy and being that they are related very much the same plant in almost every way. The leaves are the main ways to tell them apart. So I get so frustrated when people are like oak does not grow around here and I am like yes it does. It’s always grown out here! People just confuse it for ivy! Oak has a more rounded curved rough edges as poison ivy has a pointier leaf that is fuzzer sharper shaped edges. The biggest identifiers between the two is ivy has a longer bottom stem then oak and also has a fuzzy looking edges on the bottom leaf that are iconic for all ivy’s. Oak on the other hand is closer together in the bottom leaf and the bottom is rounded angular more rounded bottom rather then a sharp hairy looking point. No we are not talking about blackberry bushes who have similar leaves to baby ivy! We have oak in pa and I took so many pictures yesterday! I even have a rash to prove it. I touched all the oak to prove that it was oak and not ivy. Ivy rashes are always shiny oozy tickly super super super crazy squeeezy itchy with tiny tiny bumps that spread everywhere. Oak starts off more like mosquito bites and it’s more of a hot or burning itch as it spreads . Sumac is more of large welt rashes that are dry, hot scaley with a flat bumpy surface that almost feels like ringworm at first . There is definitely poison oak in pa and it has been long known. Articles say we don’t but I doubt those writing the articles are here in this state seeing them.

      They are just different species of a group of related plants; they all are very close relatives in the Cashew Family (Anacardiaceae). All Poison-Oak, Poison-Ivy, and Poison-Sumac are plants in the genus Toxicodendron. In the West, there is by far most commonly Western Poison-Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum) and in some areas of the interior west Western Poison-Ivy (T. rydberghii). Then out east, we have Poison-Ivy (T. radicans) and Eastern Poison -Oak (T. pubescens) (with some hairiness on the leaves). These 4 species have the 3-leaflets (leaflets of 3, let them be!) and so are very similar looking, and may be hard to tell apart wherever they live together, so if you see 3 leaflets, don't touch!! I have lived in both California and New Jersey and have seen T. diversilobum a lot in California, and I have seen T. radicans many, many times in Jersey! In the east, there is the large shrub/small tree- Poison-Sumac (T. vernix) has many more than 3 leaflets, but the same urushiol oil that can cause an allergic reaction. Coming across Poison-Sumac may be harder as it prefers less accessible places like marshes and swamps, but it is still good to identify it!
