      @@CulturalProspect It's not that simple. It's a really difficult disease to manage, and isn't as simple as just 'eating better' considering that the disease actively works against that. Intense cravings, insulin resistance etc. all make it incredibly difficult to lose weight/eat healthy and even when living a healthy lifestyle, this often doesn't cure it.

    As someone who was diagnosed over a decade ago. There seems to be no real treatment... So, sucks for us I guess? My favorite is "lose weight" when you're not overweight, and *-wait for it-* PCOS makes it very difficult to lose weight. Or "go on BC" when that often makes your periods and cramps worse when they are already unbearable. Another W for women's healthcare.....

      But it's true... Finally I got to my correct body weight (after many years of knowing that if you stay at your right weight for over 3 years your hormone levels naturally reach a healthy equilibrium) and it worked.
      Everything changed, slowly but surely. Insulin, oil, hair, skin, mood, even cramps on my legs.
      I had PCOS for almost 20 years.
      Believe me, losing weight is the best, cheapest and healthier option. Regardless of the difficulty of losing weight, IT IS the answer to the problem.
      I will add, it is easier to lose weight when you exercise. Not because of the inherited benefits of exercising itself, but because you eat "wiser" when you already sacrifice time and money to exercise. ❤

    • @werm3169
      @werm3169 Před 2 měsíci +121

      Whether or not it's a _cause_ of PCOS is up for debate. It seems to be part of a vicious cycle, in which high insulin levels worsen PCOS symptoms, but the insulin resistance could actually be caused/contributed to by the PCOS, and about 20% of women with PCOS don't have IR.
      I'm a good example of how PCOS can predispose someone to IR rather than IR causing PCOS - I have a BMI on the low healthy end, I don't eat refined carbs very often (like, I don't even remember the last time I had a slice of white bread), and I eat below the daily recommended intake for added sugars, and I'm insulin resistant. I don't even eat enough calories in a day to consume enough sugar to cause insulin resistance at my age, but here we are lol. In addition, my insulin levels have been totally normal until recently, but I've had PCOS symptoms since forever, so I know which one came first.
      For a lot of women with PCOS, it's not enough to live a healthy lifestyle to avoid IR and reduce PCOS symptoms. I feel like the only other thing I could try would be to photosynthesise lol
      Reducing IR has been established to reduce PCOS symptoms, so it's definitely good to pursue it, but you're swimming against the tide. Progress often doesn't match the effort put in. You do everything right and still fail, which is disheartening, to say the least. Hence, it's often not fully addressed.

    • @sommerzeit140
      @sommerzeit140 Před 2 měsíci +43

      @@werm3169 IR can be caused by constant high cortisol levels, which depends on both things that happen to you and on your overall attitude to what's going on. For some people doing everyday tasks is equal to crossing a battlefield, and every smallest conflict causes spikes of cortisol, which makes the cells overall less sensitive to insulin. In some cases the process of coping with IR can be seen as a problem, and it just adds even more cortisol to one's life. In this case working on one's attitude to problems and normalising sleep and work-rest balance is the only way out of the vicious circle. Not sure if it's applicable to your particular case, though.

    More medical professionals need to speak up and share all they know to those with PCOS. I am 46, was diagnosed in a flippant manner by an uncaring physician at 27 after 4 years of Bosley visits, rheumatologists, no answers, then a cold delivery of, 'you may not be able to have children'. (!) I died a little that day, alone crying while he walked out of the door.
    It was this YEAR- 2024, that I was handed my first piece of literature, a small booklet that was titled PCOS and contained any sort of ideas to better manage my life. This basic booklet came with a hefty nutritionist bill, but why isn't this handed to someone earlier in their life? I hope more experts will help anyone affected more warmly and with true concern from here on out. Happy note: With some difficulty and patience I was able to carry my one child, healthfully and to term. She's turning 13 this month. Please hang in there, keep researching and finding a compassionate endocrinologist can be a godsend. We shouldn't suffer through any medical condition without care and real-life treatment information ❤

By the time my dr removed some endometrial tissue from my left ovary & fallopian tube, there wasn't much worth saving, so, I ended up with just my right ovary left. I think I should've just had both removed lol In the last 12 years, I've even had acne on my general scalp, not just in the hairline & not just where more sweat ends up. There isnt any cure as much as i know. I had very painful periods and im having hair issues. I started taking the combiend pill about a year ago and it helped immensely with period pain but the hair is still the same. My mom also told me that she was diagnosed with it and she had one cyst that went away by itself after a couple of years. 2 have shown on my ultrasound and they still havent went away. Just try enforcing healthy habits and hopefully your body will regulate ur hormones properly

    Acne ✅
    Hair loss (like I will need a wig soon) ✅
    Facial hair ✅ I still have hair growing on my face, now on my face cheeks even though I get laser. Been doing so for over a year. At least I dont need to shave twice a day and can no longer grow a beard. I need to shave daily and it's much thinner and nowhere near as much.
    I don't have any of the insulin issues. My blood sugars have always been good even when pregnant.
    Though I have had absent periods for several years.
    I wanted help to stop hair loss, stop faical hair growth and reduce acne. I was told since I cant be on the pill (caused me to have a heart attack) and I am not trying to get pregnant there was nothing they can do and no treatment. Especially because I wasn't overweight. Otherwise they would advice to lose weight, but they couldn't recommend that.

    I was diagnosed with pcos 3 years ago. Not insulin resistance. Went for fertility treatments for 2 years. Only highest dosage allowed by government works on me. And almost die last year. Due to all sort of complications.
    I hope there will be more media coverage about women and their conditions. And how to get help.

    dropping in to say that you don’t have to have all of these to have PCOS and if you think something is wrong still get checked out. if your cycle is irregular and disrupting you should see a doctor no matter if you have these or not. i only have acne but no excess hair growth or darkening of the skin etc and that was part of the reason doctors brushed past PCOS as a diagnosis

  • @tromkehra
    @tromkehra Před 2 měsíci +1

    Yea, I was diagnosed with pcos at 17 because I was bleeding out. I do have thinned hair from before my diagnosis. I had crazy thick hair, and then like 25-30% came out in clumps the first time my iron really dropped. I tell people I have constant large mounts of hair loss all the time. They don’t believe me till I show them the clumps after conditioning. I also have the skin tags and the darkened skin. All my blood results came back normal with mildly elevated testosterone but still with in normal. Sonograms have shown big cysts on my ovaries before I started meds. I do know one thing, stress makes it 100 times worse. Pcos has nearly killed me twice through hemorrhaging.

    I have some symptoms which could be this or could be endometriosis ,but at the end who knows and my obgyn doesn't really care.
    Happy she at least eventually found I had a massive cyst for which I got medication ,which I now still take so I don't suffer with periods anymore.
    (was trying the pill before that from which I would get migraines ,so she wanted me to see a specialist for that. Which there were none available because I was still a minor then. So I had to just suffer until I got new medication )

    I've never visited a gynecologist in 18 years of my life, but I've got three symptoms of PCOS : excessive hair growth , thinning of hair(whitening of hair as well ), acanthosis nigricans. I don't really feel comfortable about acanthosis nigricans it just makes me feel ashamed of myself. When I first googled it , i found out it was due to obesity, but my BMI is approx 20 . I don't think I'm obess , as for my hair growth almost everyone in our family has excessive hair growth, so it doesn't bother me that much . I just get them removed through threading. I've never had period crams or unbearable pain that most of the women complain about , it's just that I never get periods on the same date of each month , each month they are 4_5 days late . I don't even know if that is also a symptom or it is normal. I really wish my parents were not that lazy and they could take me to a gynecologist , i wish....

    I have every single symptom. Yet my doctor missed all of it and gaslighted me when I brought it up. Until one of the cysts ruptured. I had to go to emergency of course, they did ultrasounds, which concluded my ovaries were enlarged. I had fibroids and multiple ovarian cyst.😐

    Found out my mom has PCOS and never thought to mention it to me (I'm trans so I have a uterus and all that so can affect me). I've always had excessive hair growth, I used to get a lot of skin tags, my acne has always been the worse on the lower part of my face (and worsened in this area after starting testosterone as an adult). When I used to menstruate I used to get reay bad mood swings and get depressed during. Part of that was definitely gender dysphoria, but I don't think that was the only explanation. I feel like I should get checked for it just to know, but also I'm going to get all that anatomy removed someday so I don't know if it's even worth the hassle

    I got diagnosed recently after years of going to endocrinologists who insisted that these were all normal since my tests came back normal. The worst part is that I asked about the symptoms several times "is it normal to not have my period for months?" "Is it normal to not know when my periods come?" "Why do I have facial hair and acne even though I'm supposed to not have them" all came back with different versions of "You have irregular periods" and "Nothing is wrong you're being melodramatic". Not a single referral to a gynecologist... When my mother considered me old enough to go to a gynecologist, we went and she basically told me I was effectively infertile and had a higher chance of cancer because i wasn't diagnosed until a decade after my periods started, now I take a medication to induce periods everytime they decide to not come but it still sucks that several doctors (Many of who were women) insisted that I was fine and there was nothing wrong with me and didn't need referrals when I asked about these symptoms and because of this I am going to live in fear for the rest of my life of getting uterine cancer

    CASTOR OIL - LOOK UP DR MARISOL (Queen of Thrones). I do not suffer from PCOS, but like many in the comments, I really feel for women who do. On top of everything else, you've got this added layer to deal with. I'm not sure how, but I came across a video about Castor Oil benefits, and I said I would tell everyone I find out has PCOS about it. Hope this helps.

    Sometimes, adrenal issues are misdiagnosed as pcos. Most people don't find out about adrenal tumors or issues until they see an endocrinologist.
